Libraries Transforming Communities: Columbus (Wis.) Public Library's story
For much of its history, Columbus was a rural community, but today it is quickly becoming a commuter town. Feeling the effects of this rapid change, the Columbus Public Library joined ALA's Libraries Transforming Communities (LTC) initiative to learn how to add more value in their community beyond being a lender of books.
Not only has Columbus Public Library built a stronger reputation as an institution that can help solve community challenges, but its director—a newcomer to the community—has become a stronger, more credible community leader in the process.

Marion, Illinois
Marion is a city in and the county seat of Williamson County, Illinois, United States. The population was 17,193 at the 2010 census. It is part of a dispersed urban area that developed out of the early 20th Century coal fields.
Today Marion serves as the largest retail trade center in Southern Illinois with its central location along Interstate 57 and Illinois Route 13. It is home to the Illinois Star Centre mall and the Southern Illinois Miners baseball team, and is in the process of being selected for Illinois' first STAR Bonds District for the proposed Boulder Creek at The Hill development.

ABSTRACT
Victoria Van Voorhis of Rochester, NY based Second Avenue Software will discuss the challenges in taking serious games and interactive media from the margins to the mainstream across the K-16 spectrum. Her essential question is why, given the efficacy data that we have about serious games, aren't they being integrated into the educational experience of today's students? Drawing on her years as a classroom educator, a leader in creating new media for integration into school curricula, and a business strategist she will offer a unique and multi-faceted perspective. Van Voorhis believes that solving the challenges of design and implementation of serious games are essential to scaling the potential learning outcomes. More importantly, she observes that serious games have not been developed with business models informed by effective publishing and financial sustainability strategies. Van Voorhis will provide suggestions for addressing these issues while focusing on the proven learning outcomes games offer K-16 educators and students.
About the speaker: Victoria Van Voorhis has worked in the education and technology industry for more than 15 years. She is the founder and CEO of Second Avenue Software, Inc., a woman-owned business that specializes in the development of award winning interactive media and serious games for education and training. Her goal for Second Avenue Software is to creatively blend pedagogy with technology to build innovative learning environments and curriculum that empower teachers and engage students.
Prior to founding Second Avenue Software, Ms. Van Voorhis was a teacher at the middle school, high school and college levels. She played a leadership role in evolving Xerox Corporation's business strategy. Ms. Van Voorhis received her undergraduate degree from Smith College and her master's degree from New York University. She resides in Pittsford, NY, with her husband and children.
Second Avenue Software provides content authoring, managed and services custom development services to a wide variety of clients including Pearson Education, McGraw-Hill, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, W.W. Norton and K12. While working across many academic disciplines, Second Avenue Software has specific expertise in the development of materials for STEM. In addition to its development work, Second Avenue Software also conducts primary research regarding the educational efficacy of new media and serious games for the K-16 and corporate market.

The University of Rochester (U of R or UR), often simply referred to as Rochester, is a private research university in Rochester, New York. The university grants undergraduate and graduate degrees, including doctoral and professional degrees.
The University of Rochester enrolls approximately 5,600 undergraduates and 4,600 graduate students. Its 158 buildings house over 200 academic majors. Additionally, the university is the largest employer in the Greater Rochester area and the 6th largest employer in New York. Copyright protection secures a person's right to his or her first-to-invent claim of the original invention in question, highlighted in Article I, Section 8, Clause 8 of the United States Constitution which gives the following enumerated power to the United States Congress:
In 1641, the first patent in North America was issued to Samuel Winslow by the General Court of Massachusetts for a new method of making salt. On April 10, 1790, President George Washington signed the Patent Act of 1790 (1 Stat. 109) into law which proclaimed that patents were to be authorized for any useful art, manufacture, engine, machine, or device, or any improvement therein not before known or used. On July 31, 1790, Samuel Hopkins of Pittsford, Vermont became the first person in the United States to file and to be granted a patent for an improved method of Making Pot and Pearl Ashes. The Patent Act of 1836 (Ch. 357, 5 Stat. 117) further clarified United States patent law to the extent of establishing a patent office where patent applications are filed, processed, and granted, contingent upon the language and scope of the claimant's invention, for a patent term of 14 years with an extension of up to an additional 7 years. However, the Uruguay Round Agreements Act of 1994 (URAA) changed the patent term in the United States to a total of 20 years, effective for patent applications filed on or after June 8, 1995, thus bringing United States patent law further into conformity with international patent law. The modern-day provisions of the law applied to inventions are laid out in Title 35 of the United States Code (Ch. 950, sec. 1, 66 Stat. 792).
From 1836 to 2011, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has granted a total of 7,861,317 patents relating to several well-known inventions appearing throughout the timeline below. Some examples of patented inventions between the years 1946 and 1991 include William Shockley's transistor (1947), John Blankenbaker's personal computer (1971), Vinton Cerf's and Robert Kahn's Internet protocol/TCP (1973), and Martin Cooper's mobile phone (1973).
Abby Wambach
Mary Abigail Abby Wambach (born June 2, 1980) is an American professional soccer player, coach, two-time Olympic gold medalist, and the 2012 FIFA World Player of the Year. She currently plays for Western New York Flash in the National Women's Soccer League and for the United States women's national soccer team. She played collegiate soccer for the University of Florida Gators, where she was a member of the school's first NCAA Division I Championship team and was recognized as a three-time All-American.
A six-time winner of the U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year award, Wambach has been a regular on the U.S. women's national soccer team since 2003. As a forward, she currently stands as the highest all-time goal scorer for the national team and holds the world record for international goals for both female and male soccer players with 167 goals. Wambach has competed in three FIFA Women's World Cup tournaments: 2003 in the United States, 2007 in China and 2011 in Germany; and two Olympics tournaments: 2004 in Athens and 2012 in London. All together, she has played in 29 matches and scored 22 goals at these five international tournaments.

Albany ( (listen) ALL-bə-nee) is the capital of the U.S. state of New York and the seat of Albany County. Albany is located on the west bank of the Hudson River approximately 10 miles (16 km) south of its confluence with the Mohawk River and approximately 150 miles (240 km) north of New York City.
Albany is known for its rich history, commerce, culture, architecture, and institutions of higher education. Albany constitutes the economic and cultural core of the Capital District of New York State, which comprises the Albany-Schenectady-Troy, NY Metropolitan Statistical Area, including the nearby cities and suburbs of Troy, Schenectady, and Saratoga Springs. With a 2013 Census-estimated population of 1.1 million the Capital District is the third-most populous metropolitan region in the state. As of the 2010 census, the population of Albany was 97,856.
The area that later became Albany was settled by Dutch colonists who in 1614, built Fort Nassau for fur trading and, in 1624, built Fort Orange. In 1664, the English took over the Dutch settlements, renaming the city as Albany, in honor of the then Duke of Albany, the future James II of England and James VII of Scotland. The city was officially chartered in 1686 under English rule. It became the capital of New York in 1797 following formation of the United States. Albany is one of the oldest surviving settlements of the original British thirteen colonies, and is the longest continuously chartered city in the United States.During the late 18th century and throughout most of the 19th, Albany was a center of trade and transportation. The city lies toward the north end of the navigable Hudson River, was the original eastern terminus of the Erie Canal connecting to the Great Lakes, and was home to some of the earliest railroad systems in the world. In the 1920s, a powerful political machine controlled by the Democratic Party arose in Albany. In the latter part of the 20th century, Albany experienced a decline in its population due to urban sprawl and suburbanization; however, the New York State Legislature approved a $234 million building and renovation plan for the City in the 1990s that spurred renovation and building projects around the downtown area. In the early 21st century, Albany has experienced growth in the high-technology industry, with great strides in the nanotechnology sector.

Rochester () is a city on the southern shore of Lake Ontario in western New York. With a population of 208,046 residents, Rochester is the seat of Monroe County and the third most populous city in New York state, after New York City and Buffalo. The metropolitan area has a population of just over 1 million people. It is about 73 miles (117 km) east of Buffalo and 87 miles (140 km) west of Syracuse.
