Plaça Sant Felip Neri, hidden in the heart of the Gothic quarter, is one of the prettiest plazas in Barcelona with a lot of history behind its walls. Today Jessica Bowler takes us to discover this hidden square that's often overlooked by visitors to the city.

La plaza de San Felipe Neri (en catalán plaça de Sant Felip Neri) es una plaza singular de Barcelona, que recibe el nombre de la iglesia homónima de estilo barroco que la preside. Está en el Barrio Gótico, en el distrito de Ciudad Vieja, y más concretamente en el barrio del Call y San Felipe Neri.
La plaza se erige sobre el antiguo cementerio medieval de Montjuic del Obispo, destruido durante la Guerra Civil Española Se puede acceder a la plaza tomando primero la calle San Felipe Neri y posteriormente, la calle de San Severo. La Iglesia de San Felipe Neri tiene anexada la casa de la Congregación del Oratorio de San Felipe Neri, a la cual también se puede acceder desde la misma plaza.
La plaza está rodeada de casas de estilo renacentista. También es la sede de las antiguas casas de los gremios de Caldereros y Zapateros,1 esta última es la sede del Museo del Calzado de Barcelona.2 En el centro de la plaza se encuentra una fuente de agua con base octogonal.
En la paredes de la Iglesia de San Felipe Neri todavía se pueden ver los reductos de la metralla de una bomba lanzada por la aviación del bando sublevado durante la Guerra Civil. Fue el 30 de enero de 1938 cuando el artefacto explotó donde ahora está la plaza y provocó cuarenta y dos víctimas mortales, la mayoría de las cuales eran niños que habían ido a refugiarse en el subterráneo de la iglesia y que murieron a causa de la deflagración. Aparte de las muertes, también quedaron destruidas totalmente las casas adyacentes a la plaza.
El arquitecto municipal Adolf Florensa fue el encargado del proyecto de reconstrucción y decidió recrear una plaza; también decidió adaptar dos fachadas renacentistas de dos edificios que no habían sido reconstruidos para poder crear dos accesos a la plaza desde la avenida de la Catedral y desde la Vía Layetana.Finalmente, se recreó la fachada de la entrada de la calle de San Felipe Neri aprovechando elementos de los antiguos edificios.

An incredible, tucked away square, with very powerful emotion and mystical air. The rain at the time, echoing through the surrounding streets made the experience of Plaça de Sant Felip breathtaking.
There is an old cemetery that lies underneath the site. During the Spanish Civil War, people were lined up in front of the small church and executed. The front of the church is covered in pockmarks and divots from the splash of bullets. (If you look at the divots and pitting to the right of the doors it is said you can see the pattern of the face of Christ created by the deluge of bullets.) In addition to the executions, a bomb also killed thirty school children in the plaza during the Spanish Civil War. Lastly, Antoni Gaudí was run over and killed while on his way to the plaza in 1928.

Plaça de Sant Felip Neri is a small square in the Gothic Quarter in the district of Ciutat Vella in Barcelona, Spain. The square takes its name from the Church of Saint Philip Neri which presides over the square. To the right of the church is the School of Saint Felip Neri which uses the square as a playground. To the left of the church is a house used by the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri. In the centre of the square is an octagonal fountain, dedicated as a symbol of life. The architecture of the square and surrounding buildings is in the medieval Baroque-style.
The square was once home to the Palace of Neri built in 1752. In the mid-20th century, Gothic buildings from other areas of the city were moved stone by stone to the square, instead of demolishing them to make room for urban developments. When the hotel Neri was built it was faced in similar gothic stone to maintain the gothic style of the square.
In 1938 during the Spanish Civil war, Francisco Franco laid siege to the city of Barcelona. On the 30 September 1938, one of Franco's bombs fell on the church killing 30 people most of whom were children from the School of Sant Philip Neri and some were refugee children from Madrid where the church had been turned into a make-shift orphanage. As people pulled survivors from the rubble, a second bomb hit the square, killing 12 more bringing the death toll to 42. It was the second worst bombing hit in Barcelona during the war. Evidence of the bombings can be seen in the pockmarked walls of the church. Museu del Calçat, a footwear museum in the square was closed in 2015 and building remains unused.

Se filtra una luz singular que le confiere una atmósfera única, llena de claroscuros y de matices. Plaça Sant Felip Neri is a small square in the Barri Gòtic close to Barcelona Cathedral. It's is mentioned in Carlos Ruiz Zafón's best-selling Shadow of the Wind but it's well-worth visiting to see the gunshot marks on the walls that date from the Spanish Civil War.

Sant Felip Neri square, nearby the Gothic Cathedral, is a small, round square in the heart of Barcelona's (Gothic Quarter). On the plaza itself you can find a historic place: Sant Felip Neri church, a gothic church which has been bombed during the spanish civil war. A charming fountain stands in the middle. The square also marks the entrance to Barcelona's Jewish Quarter.

It is a unique place in Barcelona, which is called Baroque church which presides. Is the Gothic quarter, Ciutat Vella, particularly in the neighborhood of Call and San Felipe Neri. The square is the old cemetery on Montjuïc medieval Bisbe, destroyed during the civil war. On the wall of the church of San Felipe Neri can see the remnants of shrapnel from a bomb dropped by aircraft of the national side during the Spanish Civil War. The municipal architect, Adolf Florensa and Ferrer, was in charge of the reconstruction project and decided to recreate a place; also decided to fit two Renaissance facades of two buildings that had not been reconstructed in order to create two entrances to the square from the Avenue des the Cathedral and from the Via Laietana. Finally, look for the entrance facade of the Rue St. Philip Neri taking cues from the old buildings.
