Tibidabo is a mountain overlooking Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. At 512 metres, it is the tallest mountain in the Serra de Collserola. Rising sharply to the north-west, it has views over the city and the surrounding coastline. Wikipedia
Elevation: 512 m

Easiest route: Tibidabo Funicular
Parent range: Serra de Collserola
Location: Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain
Mountain range: Serra de Collserola, Pyrenees
A mountain overlooking Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, Tibidabo stands more than 500 meters tall. The highest peak anywhere in the Serra de Collserola range, Tibidabo is home to an amusement park, a telecommunications tower, and Sagrat Cor, a Catholic church.
Sagrat Cor is perhaps the most fitting of Tibidabo’s attractions as this is the site where local legend says the devil tempted Jesus. The name Tibidabo derives from the Latin Vulgate Bible verses, Matthew 4:9 and Luke 4:6. The phrase, tibi dabo, means I will give to you. It was supposedly said to Jesus by the devil as they looked down from a mountain on the kingdoms of the world. The name of Barcelona’s hill, then, refers to how it is the tallest anywhere around.
Designed by Enric Sagnier, the church took about 60 years to build. At the top of the church, Sagrat Cor, is a sculpture of the Sacred Heart by Josep Miret Llopart.
Tibidabo can be reached by a funicular railway, by bus, and by car. The railway, built in 1901, was the first of its kind in Spain. The amusement park is also the oldest of its kind in the area. Constructed in 1899, the park offers more than thirty different rides, some of them dating back many decades. A few of the original attractions are also still operating, including the Museu d’Autòmates (Mechanical Museum).

Barcelona's Tibidabo Amusement Park And 'Tramvia Blau' Tram
Page Content
This page will explain how to travel to Tibidabo amusement park and what Tibidabo mountain has to offer once you are there.
The journey to Tibidabo amusement park starts with a short train ride from the centre of Barcelona from there you will take the Tramvia Blau which takes you half way up the mountain. If you wish to go all the way to the top of Tibidabo, where the amusement park is situated, you will also need to catch a funicular train from the half way point. Once at the top of the mountain you will be rewarded with magnificent views of Barcelona, an amusement park for the kids, and the opportunity to visit a beautiful church at the summit of the mountain.
Tibidabo Tram - Tramvia Blau
Tibidabo's tram was opened on 29 October 1901 as part of a project transporting people to the top of the mountain. It was opened at the same time as the Funicular- described below, providing passengers with a logical route to the magical theme park that was built at the top of the mountain around the same period.
The small blue tram - the 'Tramvia Blau', is one of Barcelona's beloved modes of transport. Its quaint appearance and friendly driver make it a pleasant experience for those wishing to make it all the way to the top to the Tibidabo Amusement Park and the church- the 'Temple de Sagrat Cor'. However, it can serve as an activity in itself - an entertaining ride finishing at the lovely Plaça Dr Andreu.
The easiest way to get to the tram's starting point is on the L7 train that leaves from Plaza de Catalunya station in the centre of town. This will take about ten minutes and drops you in Plaza de John Kennedy, right next to the necessary bus stop, which is at 2 Avenida Tibidabo - directly in front of you. Take a look at the beautiful La Rotonda building on your way past. The bus stop is right in front of this building, so it will also help you to find where you need to be.
On sunny days you will queue for the tram, but the trips are fairly regular (every 15-30 minutes) and the vehicle is larger than it looks so you are unlikely to wait for too long. Payment is made on the tram. The old Spanish conductor adds to the charm of the experience, welcoming people aboard. At busy times the tram is filled to the brim so expect to stand if you're towards the end of the queue. With steps up to the tram and a narrow interior, this is an old vehicle and, unfortunately, not suitable for wheelchair users.
Cafe midway up Tibidabo mountain - en route to Tibidabo Amusement Park. Stop for a drink and soak in the magnificent views of Barcelona before continuing up the mountain to the Amusement park.

Tibidabo is a mountain overlooking Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. At 512 meters it is the tallest mountain in the Serra de Collserola. Rising sharply to the north-west, it affords spectacular views over the city and the surrounding coastline. There is an amusement park and a Catholic church, the Temple de Sagrat Cor, at the top, all of which are visible from most of the city. Designed by Enric Sagnier, the church took 60 years to construct and is topped by a sculpture of the Sacred Heart by Josep Miret Llopart. The Amusement park is the oldest in Barcelona and retains most of the original rides, some of which date to the turn of the 20th century. The park features in the Woody Allen film Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

The Tibidabo is the local mountain of Barcelona. It is 512 m hight and if the weather is fine, you have a fantastic panoramic view above Barcelona. By Metro we drive to the Placa John F. Kennedy. It is Sunday and therefore the historic tram takes us from the Avenida del Tibidabo to the valley station of the funicular railway which brings us on top the mountain. Instead of the tram, you can take a bus, which is also cheaper.
With loud creaking and groaning, the trolley pushes up the mountain. Despite the considerable slope it is making rapid progress. At the terminus there are a restaurant and a cafe, which grant a beautiful view of Barcelona. It's foggy and therefore we doubt whether it would be a good idea to go up the mountain. In the hope that it brightens up, we opt for the ride. Once at the top, our fears prove well-founded. The visibility is poor.
But the amusement park is full of life. Families and children have their fun!
On top of the Tibidabo sits the Temple Expiatori del Sagrat Cor. The church was designed by the Catalan architect Enric Sagnier and completed between 1902 and 1961 in several stages of construction. In the fog patches, the impressive church in neo-Gothic style appears even more mystical.
Disappointed by the poor visibility we go back to the valley.
The next day we start a new attempt. The weather is gorgeous as is the view and we get our desired panoramic views.
Our eyes wander across the Sagrada Familia, the Placa Espanya, the stadium of FC Barcelona and the Torre de Collserola. The 280-meter-high television tower was built by the British architect Norman Foster for the Summer Olympics in 1992.
Pleased with this day, we take our way back the valley.

Most travellers then continue up the mountain on the Funicular de Tibidabo
Funicular Tibidabo mountain train. The funicular of Tibidabo hill train was the first of its kind in Barcelona and Spain. The train was built to take passengers to the top of Tibidabo hill, where the Tibidado fairground park is also located. The Tibidabo train was designed by the engineer Bonaventura Roig and was officially opened on the 29th October 1901 at the same time as the opening of Avenida Tibidabo avenue and the Tramvia Blau blue tram that connects to the funicular on Plaça del Doctor Andreu. The plaza is named after Dr Salvador Andreu i Grau, a succesful industrial pharmacist, who had the idea to build the funicular railway to Tibidabo's top to transport visitors to the fairground which he owned. Doctor Andreu was the first passenger on the train and took the first journey alone on 3rd July 1901.
The funicular de Tibidabo is open 15 minutes before the Skywalk opens and it closes 15 minutes after the Skywalk closes. In February the funicular is open on weekends and from March to December it runs every day. Throughout the year, the funicular carriages are decorated in fun and exciting designs so be sure to catch the brightest one! This all adds to the excitement of visiting Tibidabo as the park awaits you at the top. The park is of course not the only thing to see but spectacular views of the whole city, some of the best to see! There is also a church where you can get an even higher vantage point and admire the incredible city from afar.
A return journey costs €7.70, however, if you are visiting the park as well you can get a discount when you buy tickets for the park.

Funicolare Barcelona-Tibidabo

Tramvia Blau-Tibidabo Barcelona
The Tramvia Blau (Catalan for blue tramway) is one of Barcelona's three tram systems. It is a 1.276 kilometres (0.793 mi) long heritage streetcar line serving a hilly area of the Sarrià-Sant Gervasi district between the terminus of FGC Barcelona Metro L7 and the Funicular del Tibidabo.
The Tramvia Blau is operated by Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) but it is not part of Autoritat del Transport Metropolità (ATM) integrated fare network. Tickets must be purchased from the tram conductor.
The Tramvia Blau is one of only two first generation tramways to survive in Spain, along with the Tranvía de Sóller on the island of Majorca.
The line was built at the instigation of Sr.Salvador Andreu, who was building a residential project around the axis of the Avenida Tibidabo, and was inaugurated in 1901. The line connected at Plaça Kennedy with trams of Barcelona's city system, but was independently owned. The line's own distinctive blue livery soon led to it becoming known as the Tramvia Blau.
The line suffered several changes in 1922 and 1958.
In 1954, line 7 of the Barcelona Metro was opened to Avinguda Tibidabo station under Plaça Kennedy, providing another connection to central Barcelona. However, in the 1960s the city trams were withdrawn from Plaça Kennedy, cutting the Tramvia Blau off from the city network.
In 1971 the remaining tram routes of the Tranvías de Barcelona company were closed. However, the separately owned Tramvia Blau remained in operation. It continued in private ownership until 1979, when it was taken over by the city, who continued to operate it. Between 1971 and 2004, when the second generation Trambaix and Trambesòs lines opened, it was the only tram route in the city.
The Tramvia Blau is 1.276 kilometres (0.793 mi) long, climbing a vertical distance of 93 metres (305 ft) at a maximum gradient of 8%. It is constructed to 1,435 mm (4 ft 8 1⁄2 in) gauge and is double track, apart from single track stub terminals at each terminus. It runs in the Avinguda Tibidabo throughout, and is not segregated from other traffic.
The line's depot is accessed by some 100 metres (330 ft) of single track, which is not used in passenger service. The depot branch joins the main line near its midpoint, adjacent to the bridge carrying the Avinguda Tibidabo over the Ronda de Dalt.
