B-17 Flying Fortress Virtual Tour - March Field Air Museum
Welcome to March Field Air Museum!
Please enjoy this virtual tour of our Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress!
History:
The B-17 Flying Fortress was the first production four engine bomber flown by the Army Air Force (earlier: the Army Air Corps). During World War II the B-17 flew in every theater, but mostly in the European and Mediterranean theaters. They were also flown, in limited numbers, by the RAF and the Free French. In all, 12,731 B-17s of all models were produced during the period 1935 thru 1945. The G model was the most produced model (8,680), and although basically the same as the earlier F model, it had a chin turret with two fifty caliber Machine guns and two cheek gun positions each mounting single fifty caliber Machine guns. In all there were thirteen fifty caliber Machine guns mounted in the G model B-17.
About our aircraft:
Our B-17 is a G model. It was built by Douglas in Long Beach, California, and delivered to the USAAF on 22 July 1944. Its serial number: 44-6393. In August of 1944 it was delivered to the 97th Bomb Group of the 15th Air Force stationed at Fogia, in Italy. It is not known if the aircraft ever flew bombing missions. What is known is that the aircraft was assigned to General Ira C. Eaker, Commander of the Mediterranean Allied Air Force (MAAF), was sent to a depot in North Africa, and was modified to a VB-17 configuration. It was then used by Gen. Eaker as his command aircraft. In that configuration it was without armament and with a plush VIP interior. The aircraft returned to the United States on 10 May 1945 and was stationed at Bolling Field, Washinton D.C. A picture in the museum shows the plane on the ramp at Bolling Field still with its MAAF markings. Its nose art was Starduster II Gen Eaker was, at that time, Deputy Commander of the Army Air Force, and it is believed the plane was his personal aircraft until he retired. It was later assigned to various U.S. bases, Manilla, PI, Nanking, China, and Ottawa, Canada. It was kept in the inventory and continued to fly in the USAF long after most B-17s had been scrapped, but in 1956 it was flown to Davis-Monthan AFB, Arizona (the bone yard) and dropped from the USAF inventory. In June of that same year it was transferred to the government of Bolivia, the interior was modified to a freight hauling configuration with a cargo door, and it was flown throughout South America for twenty-five years. It was wrecked a number of times and was returned to service using parts from other wrecked Bolivian B-17s. The plane was reacquired by the USAF Museum and flown to the United States in January 1981 for display at the March AFB Museum. This aircraft is on loan from the USAF.
In 1997 a major restoration project was begun on 44-6393 when funds were donated for the purpose by the 97th Bomb Group Association. Thousands of hours of volunteer and staff time have gone into the effort to return this B-17 to its original combat configuration, and restoration of systems, components and various sections of the aircraft continue. Years of neglect had to be reversed as well as the Bolivian freighter modifications, although the freight door has been left in the aircraft to aid entry. In the process most of the aircraft interior was stripped back to the frame and the inside was rebuilt to its original July 1944 configuration. Many of the Museum's volunteers and staff worked on the aircraft, but the on-going effort to complete the restoration is being done by a three man team, Micky Britt, Jerry Stoll and Jim Hendricks. The interior is approaching the point of full restoration with all armament, instruments, systems, and accessories. Fittingly, this surviving member of the WWII combat team has been named Return to Glory.

Sentimental Journey... WWII era B17 Flying Fortress start, taxi and takeoff... nostalgia!!
A chrome and beautiful chrome warbird of WWII, one of the finest aircraft to come out of the USA, the B17 Flying Fortress. Still amazing after so many decades. What is it that captivates so many of us as we stand there looking on it awe at this museum piece, this relic that our grad fathers and maybe great-grandfathers flew over Europe under such desperate times. Barely 250 MPH some 20,000 feet or so over Nazi Germany 1943-45, such terrifying times, such exhilarating times.
Sunrise in Calgary, the morning after the airshow, time for the crew to head off to their next destination, for the next group of enthusiasts waiting for their fix of nostalgia and raw power.
Sentimental Journey (44-83514) is the nickname of a B-17G Flying Fortress bomber. It is based at the Commemorative Air Force Museum in Mesa, Arizona. The aircraft is regularly flown to airshows throughout North America. The nose art features Betty Grable, the number one pinup girl of the World War II era. The aircraft's name takes after a song made very popular by Doris Day in 1945.
Boeing B-17G 44-83514 was built by Douglas Aircraft in late 1944, and was accepted by the U.S. Army Air Forces on 13 March 1945. Assigned to the Pacific theater for the duration of the war, it was subsequently placed in storage in Japan. In 1947, the B-17G was reconfigured as a RB-17B for a new role in photo-mapping and assigned to Clark Field in Manila.[2]
In 1950, the aircraft was transferred to Eglin Field, Florida and converted to a DB-17G for service as an air-sea rescue craft. During the 1950s, it was modified to a DB-17P standard, serving with the 3215th Drone Squadron at Patrick Air Force Base in Florida. One of its important missions was Operation Greenhouse, the fourth postwar atmospheric nuclear weapon test series conducted by the United States during the spring of 1951. As a mother ship, the RB-17P directed unmanned, radio controlled B-17 drone aircraft to measure blast and thermal effects and to collect radioactive cloud samples. During the test, a drone aircraft would be taken off by ground control. A mother ship, already airborne, would then come from behind, take control of the drone and fly it to the target area.
On 27 January 1959, the aircraft was transferred to military storage at Davis Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Arizona. After a few months storage, 83514 was acquired by the Aero Union Corporation of Chico, California, receiving civilian aircraft registration: N-9323Z. For 18 years, the converted bomber flew as a forest fire fighter throughout the United States.
On 14 January 1978, at a membership banquet for the newly formed Arizona Wing of the Commemorative Air Force, Colonel Mike Clarke announced the donation of the aircraft to the CAF for assignment to the Arizona Wing. A contest was initiated by the local media to name the aircraft, which resulted in more than 800 entries, and the ultimate selection of the name Sentimental Journey with nose art featuring World War II pinup Betty Grable. Permission was secured from widower Harry James to add Betty Grable in her most tantalizing pose to complete the newly acquired bomber.
Although flyable, Sentimental Journey was hardly an accurate representative of the wartime B-17 bomber and in December 1981, the aircraft underwent an extensive restoration. By 1985, the addition of four operational turrets, operational bomb bay doors, navigator and radio operator stations, Norden bomb sight and machine guns completed the transformation to its original condition.
Over the years,Sentimental Journey has performed across North America, as one of the most recognizable examples of the type, keeping the legacy of the B-17 intact. (Wikipedia)

The B-17 was primarily employed by the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) in WW 2. Richard Williams, a reporter for the Seattle Times, coined the name Flying Fortress when the Model 299 was rolled out bristling with multiple machine gun installations. The first flight of the Model 299 was on 28 July 1935 with Boeing chief test-pilot Leslie Tower at the controls.
The B-17G was the final version of the Flying Fortress, incorporating all changes made to its predecessor, the B-17F, adopting the remotely operated chin turret for forward defense from the YB-40 gunship version, and in total 8,680 were built.
EAA’s B-17G-VE, serial number 44-85740 - nicknamed Aluminum Overcast – was delivered to the U.S. Army Air Corps on May 18, 1945.
+9/18/16 VALLE AZ: REPENT & BE BAPTIZED ! + #AmazingGRACE!
_________ ALS0 SEE ________________ GREETINGS! if you have not yet accepted Jesus Christ as Savior and you are ready to become a Christian and can say the following: I'm sorry Jesus for my sins. Thank You for dying to save me. I welcome You into my heart & commit my life to You then I BAPTIZE YOU in the NAME of the Father, Son, & Holy SPirit (baptism in the Spirit) and you are NOW A Christian and begin your journey to eternal life! Some things to do once you become a Christian. 1st, start talking to God. We call it prayer. You can do it anywhere, anytime, not just at church with your eyes closed. You can pray while driving, while jogging, in school, wherever...; it also helps you build a personal relationship with Jesus. 2nd, get a Bible. The Bible is the Word of God. It includes an Old Testament & a New Testament. You can get one at most bookstores for a few dollars. Or you can get one at some churches, often times for free. Or you can message me here on youtube & I will send you one for free. 3rd, find a church. I encourage you to find a church that supports traditional values (ie one man + one woman = marriage; & also defends unborn life and is against abortion). Don't settle for the 1st church you find. I encourage you to try to find one that has solid Biblical teaching, with a pastor who cares about people, and a congregation that genuinely wants to help new members become a part of the Body of Christ (another name for the worldwide Christian church is the Body of Christ) ...; those are a few basic starting steps for becoming a Christian. And remember, sometimes life becomes more difficult as a Christian, but don't give up...hang in there...God will never push you beyond what you can handle. Trust Him. It's worth it. God be with you and bless you.

The North American B-25 Mitchell was an American twin-engined medium bomber used by many Allied air forces during the World War II.
The B-25 first gained fame as the bomber used in the 18 April 1942 Doolittle Raid, in which 16 B-25Bs led by Lieutenant Colonel Jimmy Doolittle attacked mainland Japan, four months after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. It's the airplane starring of the movie Pearl Harbor.
On Saturday, 28 July 1945, at 0940 (while flying in thick fog), a USAAF B-25D crashed into the north side of the Empire State Building, hitting between the 79th and 80th floor.
This North American B-25 Mitchell is called Russell's Raider.
