Planty Park Krakow
???? “Planty is one of the largest city parks in Kraków, Poland. It encircles the Stare Miasto (Old Town), where the Medieval city walls used to stand until the early 19th century. The historic Old Town is not to be confused with the Administrative District No. 1 Stare Miasto extending further east.
The park has an area of 21,000 square meters (5.2 acres) and a length of 4 kilometers (2.5 mi). It consists of a chain of thirty smaller gardens designed in varied styles and adorned with numerous monuments and fountains. There are over twenty statues of noble historical figures in the park – monuments of Nicolaus Copernicus, Jan Matejko, queen Jadwiga and king Wladyslaw II Jagiello, just to name a few. There are also several plaques in the park commemorating, among others, Jan Dlugosz and Stanislaw Wyspianski.
The park forms a scenic walkway popular with Cracovians. In summer, sprinkled with ponds and refreshment stalls, it is a cool and shady retreat from the nearby bustling streets.
Most historic sites of the old Kraków are located inside the Planty-park-belt along the Royal Road (Polish: Droga Królewska) crossing the park from the medieval suburb of Kleparz – through Florian Gate – at the northern flank of the old city walls. The historic Wawel Castle at the Wawel Hill, adjacent to Vistula River meander, forms the southernmost border of Planty.
The green belt was established in place of the medieval walls between 1822–1830 as part of the urban development projects to preserve the concept of a garden city.
By the beginning of the 19th century, the expanding city had begun t outgrow the confines of the old defensive walls. The walls had been falling into disrepair due to lack of maintenance after the Partitions of Poland. As a result, Emperor Franz I of Austro-Hungary ordered the dismantling of the old fortifications. However, in 1817 Professor Feliks Radwański of Jagiellonian University managed to convince the Session of the Senate of the Republic of Kraków to legislate the partial preservation of the old fortifications, namely, the Florian Gate and the adjoining Barbican, one of only three such fortified outposts still surviving in Europe.”

Kraków In Your Pocket - Planty Park
Kraków In Your Pocket editor Garret Van Reed explains the origins of Planty Park which rings Kraków's Old Town. Referred to as the lungs of the city, the belt of parkland (Planty) that rings the old town is a relatively new addition to the Kraków landscape. Once the site of a three kilometre stretch of defensive walls, the 13th century medieval moats were filled in and the towers demolished during the first half of the 19th century.

20 Things to do in Kraków, Poland Travel Guide video transcript:
We kicked off this trip to Poland with a visit to Krakow, a city people have been telling us to visit for years and now we know why. Krakow in the summertime was wonderful! We spent our time enjoying castle views from the river side, exploring neighbourhoods covered in street art, eating some of the best pierogie of our lives, and also discovering what we think may be the best ice cream. The following is our travel guide to some of the best things to do in Krakow!
Wawel Castle is Krakow's crowning jewel, and for centuries it was the residence of the kings of Poland. You can see a mix of Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque architecture all in one place.
While in the city, we also had to walk the Royal Route, which was once the historic coronation path of Polish kings.
After visiting the basilica, we spent a bit of time walking the Main Square, which just so happens to be Europe's largest medieval town square.
And that’s it for our visit to Krakow! We hope this video gave you a few ideas of things to do around the city. If you have any other places to add to this list or any tips for fellow travellers visiting Krakow feel free to share those.
This is part of our Travel in Poland video series showcasing Polish food, Polish culture, Polish cuisine while visiting Kraków Polska.

Christmas Market in Krakow, Poland 2019 - The Best in Europe!
Today we are going back to the roots, our home city of Krakow.
Krakow’s Christmas Market takes place in the Main Market Square, which also happens to be one of the biggest squares in Europe.
We also tried the sourdough bread with meat and vegetables but we also highly recommend oscypek which is smoked sheep cheese from the south of Poland, Polish Pierogi, and potato pancakes.
While here we also check out the Christmas tree in the square, as well as the different stalls to see what types of things you can buy at the Krakow Christmas Market.

I took a 50-minute walk around the entire circumference of Krakow old town along the Planty Park and up to Wawel hill with the GoPro 7 clipped to a pocket on the jacket. It was fairly steady but bouncy. Yet, the footage looks steady. It was recorded in 15X mode.

A quick video of the Royal Route in Krakow, Poland.
The Krakow Royal Road is the historic ceremonial route that King’s and other royalty would use as they made their way through the city when it was Poland’s capital.
Today, this royal route links most of the main tourist sites and other historical landmarks in the Krakow Old Town.
The best way to explore Krakow is to start by following the Royal Road through the center of the Old Town and making your way to Wawel Hill and the Wawel Castle.
I recommend starting your journey early in the morning, especially during the warmer summer months, to avoid the insane tourist crowds in the Krakow Old Town during the day.

My Trip - Krakow Poland
???? Video subtitles available in ENG and ROM.
Kraków or Cracow is the second-largest and one of the oldest cities in Poland. Situated on the Vistula River in the Lesser Poland region, the city dates back to the 7th century.
Krakow, Poland…this is a city that deserves to be on every traveler’s must-see list. With its large market square, colorful streets, historic sites, and abundance of amazing, budget-friendly restaurants, Krakow is a favorite stop for many people on their tour through Poland.
The largest medieval square in Europe, Main Market Square (Rynek Glówny) dominates the enchanting Old Town of Krakow with its elegant historical houses, majestic palaces, and Gothic churches. It is the city's beating heart, offering a plethora of restaurants and fancy cafes, as well as some wonderful shopping opportunities.
Cloth Hall is your best and easiest bet for gifts in Kraków. Essentially the world's oldest shopping mall, this space in the center of Kraków has been home to a trading hall since at least the 1300s. Given a 16th century Renaissance facelift, this architectural marvel boasts dozens of stalls selling amber jewellery, lacework, cloth handicrafts, wood carvings, sheepskin rugs and all sorts of Polish souvenirs and trinkets at prices that are actually more reasonable than you'd anticipate. The quintessential Cracovian shopping experience.
“Planty is one of the largest city parks in Kraków. It encircles the Stare Miasto (Old Town), where the Medieval city walls used to stand until the early 19th century.

The historic Wawel Castle at the Wawel Hill, adjacent to Vistula River meander, forms the southernmost border of Planty.”
Wawel Castle is one of Krakow’s must-see sights and an important Polish landmark. As Polish castle complexes go, Wawel is large and significant. This enclosed fortification, which includes palaces and a cathedral, overlooks the Vistula river on a raised rock outcropping.
Also like other fortresses in Poland and throughout Europe, the Wawel Castle that stands today is made up of buildings from different eras, and original structures have been replaced by more permanent, decorative structures.
After Tartar raids in the 13th century left the original church in a heap of ruins, St. Mary’s was rebuilt in Gothic style on the existing foundations and consecrated in 1320. In the early 15th century the towers took the iconic form they have today when the northern tower was raised to 80m high and made into a watchtower for the city. It is from here that the hejnał mariacki - the city's famous bugle call - is played every hour on the hour. One of the city's most enduring traditions, the tune ironically breaks off mid-melody in honor of the mythical trumpeter who was shot in the neck while belatedly warning the city of Mongol invaders; don't miss it.
From St. Mary's Church, Florianska Street will lead you directly to what's left of the city's old defense walls.
The showpiece of the city's medieval defenses, the Barbican was built at the end of the 15th century to protect Kraków's main entrance and was connected to the Floriańska Gate via a drawbridge over the moat that surrounded it. 24.4 meters in diameter with walls 3 meters thick this masterpiece of medieval military engineering proved impenetrable and today stands as one of the only surviving structures of its kind in Europe; certainly the most well-preserved.

Krakow, Poland - Travel Around The World | Top best places to visit in Krakow
Top best places to visit in Krakow
Krakow second biggest polish city, lies in the south of Poland. One of the most important polish city with the great history. Official name is The Royal Capital City of Krakow. Central point of city center is Adam Mickiewicz Monument. The Main Square is dominated by the Town Hall Tower, Cloth Hall and St. Mary’s Basilica. Florianska Street is part of The Royal Route which begins at Wawel Hill continues through the center and leads to Florian’s Gate. On the other side of the walls there is Planty park surrounding the Old Town and Barbican, a historic gateway into the medieval city. The Grunwald Monument at the center of Matejko Square, also part of the Royal Route, is located just behind the Barbican. On the way back to the center we suggest you to see the Slowacki Theater. Old Town has many squares the Little Marketplace and the Stefanus Square are ones of the biggest.
Jagiellonian University is one of the best and the oldest university in Europe and its oldest part is the Collegium Maius. On the way to Wawel Castle you should not miss two monasteries Franciscans and
Dominicans. St. Mary Magdalene Square is the oldest part of the Old Town with the column of Peter Skarga and St. Peter and Paul Church. Wawel Castle is a symbolic place of great significance for Polish people. The seat of Polish monarchs... Coronation of Polish kings took place in this cathedral. The Royal Castle and the Cathedral is the best highlight of the city. Don’t forget about Wawel Dragon, one of the symbols of Krakow.
Kazimierz was a separate town, today, part of it, is a Jewish district, here you can find synagogues and Jewish hotels and restaurants. Around Remuh Synagogue there is even a small Jewish cemetery. This is also a good place for a nightlife, Near the New Square are a lot of bars and restaurants. The Old Town Hall is on the Wolnica Square. In this area there are several important churches. St. Micheal’s Church or Church on the Rock is the best example. Many famous Poles are buried here. And behind this church is Vistula River... just a stone’s throw from the Wawel Castle.
Krakow is not only Old Town and Kazimierz. There are some other interesting districts like Podgorze and Nowa Huta which means New Steel Mill. It was build by communists and it is very typical of socialist realism.
Not far away from historic center there is a large green space called Blonie If you want to see great view of the city you have to visit the Kosciusko Mound.
