The Plastic Whales of Amsterdam
We're all aware that we need to reuse our plastic, but one entrepreneur took it to the extreme. When the Amsterdam canals were becoming too clogged with plastic, Marius Smit founded the Plastic Whale, a boat made out of plastic with the sole purpose of fishing for more. #LocalHeroes

PLASTIC WHALE CIRCULAR FURNITURE
Plastic soup is a growing global problem. This year another 8 billion kilos of plastic waste will enter the world’s rivers, lakes and oceans, creating a hazard to sea life and humans. We have two options: do nothing or do something. At Plastic Whale and Vepa Project Furniture we’ve decided to do something. Joining forces to turn a problem into a solution: Plastic Whale Circular Furniture.

Plastic Whale: Fishing for Plastic in Amsterdam
In Amsterdam, you can go fishing… For plastic! Our waterways are choking with so much trash. Even the birds are building their nests out of it. But Plastic Whale is on a mission to clean up Amsterdam’s canals. Volunteers go “plastic fishing” with nets and collect the garbage from the canals before it can break down into microplastics or make it out to the ocean. But they don’t just throw the plastic out. Their boats are made of plastic bottles. They’ve already made 9 boats! And they plan to make more.

KONINGSVISSEN 2018
Every year the Plastic Whale Foundation organises two public events on the most polluted days of the year; the day after King's Day and the day after the Canal Parade. Together with 248 people we fished 245 bags of waste out of the canals of Amsterdam!

A 10 metre whale made from plastic bags, bottles and straws is starting a journey across the UK.
It's part of the Sky Ocean Rescue Campaign to highlight the amount of plastic that ends up in the ocean, and to inspire people to make changes in their own lives to reduce it.
Sky's Jayne Secker was in East London for the start of the journey.

Fishing for plastic on Amsterdam's eco-friendly canal cruises | AFP
While eco-tourism is booming around the world, the Dutch company Plastic Whale is offering a new style of cruises along Amsterdam's famous canals. Participants aim to fish as much plastic waste as possible during a two-hour boat tour. In 2018, nearly 12,000 people took part in these cruises, with participants ranging from tourists or Dutch citizens from businesses and schools.

Plastic Whale 2016

We Are Plastic Whale
Plastic Whale is the first professional company in the world. A social enterprise with a mission - we want plastic-free waters. Worldwide. We achieve this by showing others that economic value can be created from plastic waste, involving as many people and businesses as possible within the pillars: We Collect, We Create, We Educate.
We Collect. We collect as much plastic waste with as many people as possible. We started in the Netherlands but we aim to involve people across the globe.
We Create. We create economic value from plastic waste. We currently make boats and office furniture. The more we create, the more raw materials we need, the more positive impact we make.
We Educate. With our school program we reach thousands of young people in NL and Internationally. With presentations and workshops we reach and inspire companies and individuals to get involved with our mission.

The building of Skyscraper, the giant plastic whale in Utrecht
In the Catharijnesingel near TivoliVredenburg you can find a giant plastic whale made of five tonnes of litter that was polluting the ocean near Hawaii. The Faculty of Law, Economics and Governance of Utrecht University has arranged for the piece to come to Utrecht for a period of six months. 'This whale is a symbol for our research into sustainable water management.'

Amsterdam's PLASTIC Problem - VLOG Time Travels
So Amsterdam has a problem. People throw stuff in the beautiful canals and pollute them heavily. Over the years the problem got worse and worse. So today we're meeting the awesome guys from Plastic Whale. A not so little NGO anymore that takes tourists on special sightseeing tours with fishing nets and garbage bins. We love their idea. They really make a difference!
In this vlog it's all about water in Amsterdam. We discover the Maritime Museum, go Canoeing and Arne has way too close encounters with local boats.
