Plaza de Oriente is a square in the historic centre of Madrid, Spain. It is rectangular in shape and monumental in character and was designed in 1844 by Narciso Pascual y Colomer. The square was propagated by King Joseph I, who ordered the demolition of the medieval houses on the site.
It is located between some important landmarks in Madrid: To the west is the Royal Palace, the Royal Theatre to the east, and to the north is the Royal Monastery of the Incarnation. A royal palace that once had aspirations to be the Spanish Versailles. Sophisticated cafes watched over by apartments that cost the equivalent of a royal salary. The Teatro Real, Madrid’s opera house and one of Spain’s temples to high culture. Some of the finest sunset views in Madrid… Welcome to Plaza de Oriente, a living, breathing monument to imperial Madrid.
At the centre of the plaza, which the palace overlooks, is an equestrian statue of Felipe IV. Designed by Velázquez, it's the perfect place to take it all in, with marvellous views wherever you look. If you’re wondering how a heavy bronze statue of a rider and his horse rearing up can actually maintain that stance, the answer is simple: the hind legs are solid, while the front ones are hollow. That idea was Galileo Galilei’s. Nearby are some 20 marble statues, mostly of ancient monarchs. Local legend has it that these ageing royals get down off their pedestals at night to stretch their legs. The adjacent Jardines Cabo Naval, a great place to watch the sunset, adds to the sense of a sophisticated oasis of green in the heart of Madrid.

Royal Palace of Madrid (El Palacio de Oriente)
The Palacio Real. The Spanish Royal Palace in Madrid serves a function: The Royal Family does not live in the palace although it is its official residence but the building is used for official public affairs. Part of it is open to the public. This Baroque giant on the west side of the city has 3,418 rooms, making it the largest palace in Europe.
Once a Moorish fortress, the Royal Alcázar of Madrid was a castle where the kings of Castile and other members of the royal family once lived. It all went up in flames in 1734 – it was Christmas time and the alarm bells that sounded were confused with the Mass bells. The Palacio Real built on the same location surpassed its predecessor in its splendour. In 1764, King Carlos III moved in. Nowadays, the royal treasures are one of the main reasons to visit the palace, although the gardens are also very popular.
