Day 7 in Taiwan, was one of our best days so far. Ying and I woke up at our new hotel, and we decided to go on a quick day trip to Beitou hot springs, a famous area in Taipei, where there’s a natural hot water spring, and home to quite a lot of history, attractions and relaxing hotels. It was very easy to get from central Taipei to Beitou by using public transportation on the train, and it took about 30 minutes to get from central Taipei to Xin Beitou station. From Xin Beitou station, we walked over to the hot springs area.
2:15 Beitou Public Library
The first place we arrived on our day trip to Beitou hot springs was the Beitou Public Library. The library is fully in use, but the reason it’s popular to visit and it’s kind of an attraction is because of its unique architecture and its eco friendly design. We didn’t spend more than a few minutes there, but just looked at it from the outside and then took a quick peek inside.
2:45 Beitou Hot Springs Museum
One of the main attractions at Beitou is the hot springs museum, originally the original Japanese bathhouse in Beitou. It’s not a huge museum, and the price is free, so it’s a good place to just check out for a few minutes before moving on.
3:29 Beitou Plum Garden
I thought it was just going to be a garden with plums, but it was actually the former home of a famous Chinese calligrapher. The house was another quick stop on our day trip, but worth the quick visit.
3:52 Beitou Hot Springs - Public Bath
The time finally came to visit the main attraction at Beitou, the hot springs. They have many higher end spas and hotels with private baths, but I went for the public Taiwanese style hot spring bath. They didn’t allow any photography inside, but it was pretty nice and I enjoyed soaking in the natural hot water for a few minutes before moving on with our day.
4:54 Thermal Valley
One of the most famous things to see in Beitou is the Thermal Valley, a big pool of water that’s boiling hot and is the source of the hot springs for Beitou. The water is really hot and there’s not swimming so it’s more of just a viewpoint and a place to take photos.
While there, we met up with Joe, Raymond, and his Father, by random chance. They were visiting from California and were spending the day at the Beitou hot springs and were en-route to have lunch and go to another hot spring and invited us to go along with them.
6:32 Epic Taiwanese Country Style Farm Lunch
Along with Joe, Raymond, and his Father, we drove through the mountains and after about 45 minutes we arrived at a small local style hot spring where we were going to have lunch. They did all the ordering and we were soon faced with what was one of the best Taiwanese food meals I had the entire trip to Taiwan. All the food was home style cooked, and tasted very country style, and everything was delicious. I especially enjoyed the deer on the hot plate and the roast quail.
On Day 7 in Taiwan, we planned to just take a day trip to Beitou hot springs, but completely unplanned, it turned into one of the best days of our trip and one of the best meals as well.
Big thank you to Joe, Raymond, and his Father for inviting us!

World's Top Hot Springs District-Beitou, Taiwan
Beitou Hot Springs District in Taipei City, Taiwan is one of the largest hot springs districts in the world. It's original Japanese influence is found in it's heritage buildings and wonderfully landscaped gardens. Originally developed during the Japanese occupation of Taiwan near the beginning of the 20th century, it's a popular destination for residents of Taipei with it's convenient location only 25 minutes from the city's Main Station(train/MRT station).
Plum Garden was built towards the end of the 1930’s as a retreat and villa for Mr. Youren Yu, a calligraphy master who would vacation here in the summer. Plum Garden was rated as a historical site by the Taipei City government in 2006. It is a traditional Japanese style residential building equipped with an air raid shelter.
The home showcases the artistry of Mr. Youren Yu.
The Beitou Hot Springs Museum was built in 1913 as the Beitou Public Bathouse at the time the largest bathhouse in East Asia. But by World War ll the building had been abandoned. While on a field trip in 1994 a group of teachers and students from the Beitou Elementary School discovered that the bathouse was still abandoned and petitioned for the conversation of the site. By 1998 the bathouse had been restored and opened to the public as the Beitou Hot Springs Museum.
In it’s glory days Beitou with it’s hot springs culture and romantic atmosphere became the backdrop for many films earning it the nickname the Hollywood of the Taiwanese film industry.

FROM THE SIGN AT THE THERMAL VALLEY:
1. Beitou Thermal Valley is 3,500 square meters, a depression formed before the volcano eruption. The hot spring here may reach over 90°C in some areas, and is the hottest spring in Datun Volcano Group. It was open to public to cook eggs and a lot of scalding issues occured and the hot spring was also contaminated. In 1993, the Taipei City Council decided this place should be administered as other water sources.
2. The hot spring comes from deep inside the volcano, and it is acidified with volcanic gas. The hot water rises to the earth surface and mixes with surface water to form the hot spring. It is called green sulfur as the water is light green, like jade, and contains a lot of sulfate minerals and traces of radium, a radioactive matter. After a long period of sedimentation, it crystalizes on the rock bed of Beitou Stream. It is then called hokutolite, Beitou Rock in Chinese, which is the only rare mineral named after a place name in Taiwan. It is only discovered in Beitou and Tamagawa Hot Spring in Senboku, Japan. Parts of Beitou Stream have been designated as Hokutolite Nature Reserve and public access is prohibited. The hokutolite is on display in Beitou Hot Spring Museum and Beitou Thermal Valley.
3. It is said the green sulfur spring has healing and rehabilitation effects. The hot spring is available to hot spring users in Xinbeitou and the Beitou Public Hot Spring, commissioned by Taipei Water Department.

Wiki writes about Beitou, Beitou District is the northernmost of the twelve districts of Taipei City, Taiwan. The historical spelling of the district is Peitou. The name originates from the Ketagalan word Kipatauw, meaning witch. Beitou is the most mountainous and highest of Taipei's districts, encompassing a meadow with rivers running through the valley which have abundant steam rising from them; the result of geothermal warming. The valley is often surrounded by mist shrouding the trees and grass. Beitou is famous for its hot springs.[1] In March 2012, it was named one of the Top 10 Small Tourist Towns by the Tourism Bureau of Taiwan...

Taipe Beitou Park
The park was constructed in 1913. Abundantly planted with trees and flowers, it is an elegant park with scenes of creek and little bridges. The Beitou creek goes through the whole park, from east to west, making the place an important landscape in Beitou area. Hot spring hotels have been built alongside the park which has made Beitou a backyard garden of Taipei.
Beitou Library (Green Building)
Built in a different way with traditional construction, Beitou Library was designed as a “Green Building Library.”It is not constructed by steels and cement. It is a big tree house in the park. Readers can enjoy viewing mountainous scenery and relaxing breeze while they are reading.
Beitou Creek & Hokutolite
Beitou Creek traverses through the park. At several places, little waterfalls have been formed due to riverbed high-low variations. Hokutolite was found under such natural conditions. It was the first stone named by a place name, Beitou. It is a kind of mine with radioactivity of radium.
Long Nai Tang (Takinoyu)

The building was constructed in 1916 under sponsorship by railway staffers and community people. It looks with Japanese taste, and the building is with simplicity and nobility. A Buddha has been worshiped there to protect the hot spring industry at Beitou.
Thermal Valley

Visitors used to boil eggs there, making its name “A hell for boiling eggs.”It has been under management by Taipei Water Department for years. Landscape, pipes system, reservoir, trails with rails, pavilions, etc, have been well constructed. The misty phenomenon year round has created a fantastic atmosphere there.
Beitou Hot Spring Museum
Its original name was “Beitou Public Bathhouse” built in 1913 with the same style of bathhouse at Izushan in Japan. It was constructed with a combination of English and Japanese styles. The materials used were bricks, woods, black tiles, etc. Visitors are requested to put on museum slippers when they enter.
Plum Garden was established in 1930 by a rich Japanese. Its elegant outlook with delicate layout inside has shown a house in typical Japanese mood. Yu Yo Ren started to lodge in this place for getting away from hot weather, being lobbied, social activities. At the entry gate, the name “Plum Garden” was written by himself for memory, he was a famous calligrapher.
Beitou Thermal Valley (地熱谷), Taipei, Taiwan, 11/26/2013
Beitou Thermal Valley or Geothermal Valley(地熱谷) is a volcanic crater filled with steaming natural sulfuric hot spring water. During the Japanese colonial era, the valley was known as one of Taiwan's eight great natural beauties and the magical translucent green colored waters gave rise to one of its pet names, Jade Springs Valley. The mineral composition of the rare green sulfur spring waters can only be found in two locations in the world, here in Beitou and in Akita, Japan.
The temperatures of the waters can reach up to 100°C (212°F), making them unsuitable for bathing. However, the curling steamy mist that rises up from the waters can climb as high as 100 meters into the sky, and depending on the winds, can completely engulf themselves around visitors, making for a spectacular sight. The eery steam is also the reason for the area's other nickname, Hell Valley. Despite being the hottest spring in the area, it is said that the residual heat source is insufficient to sustain another volcanic eruption, so the valley's days may be numbered.
