Coal Town - Pocahontas, Virginia
Journey back to the beginning of coal mining in the Appalachians and the beginning of a new culture of people.
Through oral histories, the film profiles the history and culture of the people. It features historic landmarks, such as the 70 year old exhibition mine, the 1883 company store, the 125 year old cemetery, the 1895 Opera House and various churches and buildings throughout town. In addition to the interviews of area residents, there are interviews with college professors, a local congressman, and local leaders.
Our hope is that people come away from watching and feel like we did when we first visited Pocahontas. The buildings are incredible, the history is fantastic, but neither compare to the real hidden treasures of the area, the stories of the people. Dan McCoig

Three rescued from West Virginia mine
(13 Dec 2018) Three people missing since last weekend were found alive Wednesday and rescued from an underground coal mine in southern West Virginia, authorities said. TV news video later showed them emerging from an ambulance as friends and family cheered. (Dec. 13)

My rock club did a field trip to the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine in Beckley, West Virginia. We learned quite a bit about what it was like to be a coal miner back in the day.

Pocahontas, Virginia - Once the crown jewel of Tazewell County and the granddaddy of Appalachian coal country, it has fallen on hard times over the years. A recent focus on ATVs and outdoor activities has hopefully changed their fortunes. A must-see town in Appalachia - I'll post another video at some point reflecting the exhibition coal mine.

Between Two Hills: The Pocahontas, Virginia Story chronicles the small town's history and importance to the coal industry in the United States. Retired coal miners, current and past residents, and people with a connection to the town tell the story of Pocahontas from the early days of a thriving boom town to its current state of 'demolition by neglect' of some of the most culturally unique structures in all of the Appalachian region.
