Romania (#13): Poienile Izei Wooden Church
The Church of St. Parasceva in Poienile Izei ... built between 1604-1632. The church was built with fir beams. The square chancel is narrower than the rectangular plan of the main body of the church, as is typical for the older churches. From constructional details it has been deduced that the original church was much lower, and that it was made higher in the 18th century. The church is one of the eight churches on UNESCO's World Heritage List. A roof with double eaves covers the church, although the chancel has its own slightly lower roof, as is usual. The porch, which was added at a later date, is covered with its own protruding roofing. A tall tower with a conical roof crowns the church.
Gheorghe of Dragomiresti painted the church in the post-Byzantine tradition in 1794. The paintings are very well preserved, and include big scenes in simple frames. The colours are more important for the unity of the paintings than the actual composition of the scenes. The painted inscriptions are full of information on the period when the Habsburg Emperor Francis ruled. The entrance to the church is through beautifully painted double doors, whose upper part shows the figures of Saints Peter and Paul, and the lower parts climbing vines. Also the very wide doorframe is decorated with climbing plants and an angel on each side of the door.

In the village of Poienile Izei one of the oldest and most valuable wooden churches is found and that is part to the UNESCO cultural heritage with another 7 wooden churches in Maramures. Although an imposing church has been built in the neighborhood, the old wooden church is preserved with holiness and cared for by parish priest Ioan Pop. The church has the patron the St. Pious Paraschiva, the protector of Moldova, underlining the historical connection between Maramures and Moldova. The church is documented in 1604, but the parish priest Ioan Pop brings solid arguments that support the much older age: the square shape of the altar and the technique of joining the beams. The church has the shape of a simple nave consisting of a rectangular altar, a nave, a narthex and a porch. The roof has two eaves, and above the pronaos the tower with balcony and high spire. An unusual element is the iron moon installed on the cross of the tower, and which, according to the tradition, would protect the church during the invasion of the Tartars in 1717, confusing it with a crescent. Priest Ioan Pop argues that the so-called crescent is actually a personified month (with eye, nose, mouth) belonging to the cosmic liturgy (Earth, Sun, Moon). Over time, the church has undergone several modifications, both outward (surraisin, porch additions), and inside. Of great value is the painting made in 1794, which covers the entire interior. The iconographic program was made in an eclectic style (with old and new elements), but it is the specific one, generally, of the Maramures churches. The church has a valuable patromonium and we remind of the very old bells, icons from the 17th-18th centuries and 18th century worship books.

Ancient locality of the historical Maramures, first mentioned since 1430, the Poienile Izei village is recognized by its traditions and especially by the old wooden church dedicated to St. Pious Paraschiva and being part of UNESCO World Heritage, together with seven other old churches wood of Maramures. The church is documented in 1604, but parish priest Ioan Pop brings solid arguments that support much greater age, all of which, but also the church itself found in another video made by me ( com / watch? v = udmm1vl1fr8). The old church, situated on a hill in the middle of the cemetery, dominates the village. Near, the villagers of Poienile Izei, lead by the parish priests, built a new magnificent church, imposing as a cathedral, to meet the spiritual demands of the community and to be proud of it . The courtyards of the two churches are separated by a brook, but are joined by a beautiful covered wooden deck.
The new Orthodox church is dedicated to St. George and impresses by its greatness, architecture, decorations and interior painting. The construction of the church began in 1987, during the period of communism when there were obstacles of all kinds in the realization of such constructions. The works were done under the guidance of parish priest Gheorghe Ilies, who, unfortunately, found his end in March 1989 right on the church building site. Priest Gheorghe Ilies is represented in the painting dedicated to the founders, located at the entrance of the narthex on the left. There is also the stone slab that covers his tomb. The works were continued under the guidance of the new and current parish priest Ioan Pop, the church being finished in 2003. Priest Ioan Pop is not a simple country parish but is deeply involved in the whole life of the community, which is why he is loved and appreciated by the villagers who also participate in an unusually large number (70-80%) compared to other corners of the country, especially Sunday and big feasts.
From an architectural point of view, we remarked on the exterior the two towers that stylize the belfry tower with the balcony of the traditional Maramures wooden churches. The grandiose interior of the church, where it impresses the layout and pictorial program, is adapted to modern times (sound system, radiant ceramic heating system).

Romania (#10): Desesti Wooden Church
Desesti ... this village is 20 kilometers away from Vadu Izei by National Road 18. The oldest document mentioning this settlement is from 1360. Desesti has a fine example of the traditional Maramures wooden church. It was built in 1770 and named The Pious Paraschiva. (left) The interior was painted by Radu from Ungureni and Gheorghe Zugravul, The Painter in 1780. The paintings were some of the finest ever done in Maramures. These paintings were restored in the mid 1990's. The church also contains an excellent collection of painted icons from the nineteenth century on both wood and glass.

Romania (#14): Botiza Monastery
Botiza ... 30 kilometers from Vadu-Izei in the Botiza Valley, this village dates back from 1353. Its wooden church is named for St. Paraschiva and it was built in the thirteenth century in the town of Viseu de Jos. In 1899 it was moved and rebuilt in Botiza. During its rebuilding, the church interior was painted in the Maramuresan style by Iuga Dionisie and his daughter Aurelia. The church contains many icons painted on wood dating from the eighteenth century. You'll also find many icons on glass, most dating from the nineteenth century. Botiza is best known for its beautiful and colorful rugs.
Almost every woman in town is a weaver. Traditional weaving is one of the most important activities in the village. Only natural colors are used to obtain the thread materials for weaving. Tolurile, as they are called by the women, have striking colors: warm tints of green, yellow, and smooth brown and sometimes red and blue, made from natural dyes.
Biserica veche de lemn din DESEȘTI - Old Wooden Church (Maramures, Romania)
Enable English subtitle !
The church in Desesti is one of the most beautiful and harmonious old Maramures wooden churches. The church is built on a hill that dominates the village, replacing an old wooden church destroyed during the last invasion of the Tatars in 1717. It is not known exactly when it was built, probably in the middle of the 18th century, the first certain time being 1780 when was painted inside. The church, dedicated to Saint Paraschiva (the protector of Moldavia, October 14), is placed in a cemetery where there is a towering secular oak, as well as some Celtic crosses. The church was excellently renovated between 1996 and 1998, and since 1999, along with seven other ancient Maramures wooden churches, is part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. The church was built by Greek-Catholic believers, but after the outlawing of this cult by the Communist authorities (in 1949), it was taken over by the Romanian Orthodox Church. After the fall of communism (1990), the church was claimed, without success, by Greek-Catholics who in the meantime built another beautiful wooden church. The church is built in the classical Maramuresan style, made of oak beams and is usually divided (polygonally altar, nave and pronaos), above the pronaos being erected the bell tower provided with open balcony. The great value of the church in Desesti is the interior painting made in 1780 by two masters of the time, namely Alexandru Ponehalschi (the royal icons and the eastern tympanum of the nave, towards the altar) and Radu Munteanu (the rest of the church). The iconographic program broadly respects the tradition of those times, being made in a post-bizantine, naive, rustic style, but colorful enough. As in other old Maramures churches and in Desesti, the nave's vault is painted with scenes from the Old Testament (the Book of Making) and the walls with scenes from the New Testament (the Passion of Jesus), the contrast between the two worlds having a moralizing discourse.

Biserica de lemn din BUDEȘTI JOSANI - Wooden Church (Maramures, Romania)
Enable English subtitle !
The (now Orthodox) wooden church of Budesti Josani was built in 1643, dedicated to Saint Nicholas. Currently, together with 7 other old wooden churches in Maramures, it is part of the UNESCO World Heritage. It is one of the most important old Maramures churches, due to its monumentality, during the medieval period being the largest wooden church and model for other churches that were later built. The church was built in the classical Maramures style, having a unique roof with rapid slopes and double eaves, over the narthex, nave and altar. Above the narthex there is the belfry tower with a balcony, and more particularly, the acute spire is framed by four small turrets. The interior mural painting was made in 1762 in Neo-Byzantine style by Alexandru Ponehalschi, famous Maramuresan painter of the time. In the church we can see very valuable collections of old icons (17-18th century) painted on wood or on glass, as well as some curiosities: two royal doors, painted icons on both sides, the coat of mail and the helmet of the Pintea Viteazul (the Brave) outlaw, a cross appeared in the middle of a splited log, etc. This church is also called Josani being built at the down (jos = down) of Budesti village, thus distinguishing another newer wooden church (1760) situated at the top of the village (Susani, sus = up), the latter being retroceded in 2012 following a legal process to the Greek-Catholic cult.

Biserica de lemn din BORȘA - The Wooden Church (Maramures, Romania)
Enable English subtitle !
The wooden church located in the central part of Borsa (Maramures) has as patron the Saints Archangels Michael & Gabriel. It is an Orthodox church, a historical monument dating from the beginning of the 18th century, being restored to the location of other older churches, after the previous church was probably affected by the Tatars invasion of autumn 1717. The church is built in a traditional Maramurean style having a square tower over the narthex, with a balcony and a tall spire. The porch, the narthex and the nave have the roof with two rows of eaves. The open porch has two floors, both decorated with elegant arches caught in wooden nails. The inner mural painting was made in 1775 by anonymous artists and is one of the values of this church. Still, the pictorial style is not the same like in the historical Maramures, but brings with that of the end of 18th century from the Baia Mare area. The paintings also do not follow a clear iconographic program. Details of the painted scenes, you can find in subtitle. In the period 2009-2012 the church was restored in the interior and interior (including painting), being resanctifyed on 20 May 2012.
