Grand Canyon North Rim trip
LINKS BELOW TO SKIP AHEAD
we left Bryce Canyon and head to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon June 9,2016.
WIND NOISE was an issue. I made those clips Silent. You might want your own music and read below if you need info. These views are Huge, so you may just want to watch in silent awe...
DO NOT MISS CAPE ROYAL. This is where the North Rim is most Spectacular.
Before our trip, I had carefully looked over the map to see if there was a view of the Colorado River we could get to. I found Navajo Bridge at Marble Canyon. 45 miles each way off the road to North Rim. A couple hours out of the way but we had the time and it meant we could also get a better look at the Vermilion Cliffs.
In 2014 Roxana and I took a trip around Utah and the Grand Canyon but our North Rim stay was so short we skipped Cape Royal. Then we got to the South Rim and saw a relief map display in a visitor center, and knew i would have to return to the North Rim to see Cape Royal.
Time Links below should give you the rest of the info, and will skip the video ahead if you want
0:46 part of the Grand Staircase, tiny Chocolate Cliffs in front, Vermilion and Grey Cliffs ascending behind them. At Antelope Pass Overlook. On the way to the North Rim, here you will also find Navajo vendors selling high quality hand made crafts, please help support this artistry if you can.
1:28 Vermilion Cliffs from a vista along AZ 89A
2:02 at the town of Marble Canyon is the Navajo Bridge. We are 6 miles west of the official start of the Grand Canyon, so the bridge technically crosses it. The bridge is in Navajo Nation, and there are Navajo vendors on the Navajo side.
The new vehicle bridge opened in 1995 allowing this original bridge to eventually be turned into a pedestrian bridge.
The foot bridge is 467 ft above the Colorado River.
The River water is green here due to algae being released from Glen Canyon Dam.
2:54 Condor Sighting! later we saw 2 flying over the North Rim Gate area but they were too far to film.
3:48 once you head south on AZ 67, you will be in OPEN RANGE- COWS, and in the Park, Bison may be on the road. In daytime you should be able to see them but at night they are nearly invisible. BE CAREFUL.
4:11 DeMotte campground. Very nice, but it is outside the Park. We added North Rim to our itinerary in February and all the campsites inside the Park were already reserved. For National Park campsites you often need to reserve SIX MONTHS in advance.
4:38 Bison Herd alongside the road inside the Park. Fortunately none were In the road at this time. We also saw some Condors flying overhead here. You might see a Condor anywhere near the Grand Canyon.
5:10 first view of the Grand
5:21 Roaring Springs Canyon. the Springs is The Source of water for both the North and South Rim. It is piped down, across, and back up the other side of the Canyon. there are no other water sources for the Park but there are some small springs for hikers in the Canyon itself.
5:38 Lodge cabins. Surprisingly affordable, but make your reservations forever in advance. A few are Right on the Rim.
5:50 short trail to Bright Angel Point. The South Rim has Bright Angel Trail and Bright Angel Lodge. North Rim has Bright Angel Point and Bright Angel Canyon.
6:25 a controlled burn on the South Rim. This fire was set by Rangers to get rid of dead brush. The skies are Very Hazy, but this small fire is not the main cause. The entire southwest was hazy during this time.
7:26 Bright Angel Canyon pointed out
7:52 zoom on Bright Angel Canyon.
8:00 The Colorado River is way out there below that far cliff, we can't see it from up here.
8:40 the Lodge is At the Rim. There is a visitor center, gift shops, Fine Dining, a Good buffet, a Deli, and of course restrooms. You are welcome to sit on the couches and use the patio. We saw waiters bring drinks to the patio chairs so not sure if they will shoo you away eventually if you dont buy a drink but we had no problems hanging out for half an hour. we REally enjoyed the buffet, no reservations or dress code $25/person GOOD food and a Grand Canyon View.
9:51 We happened ot be here during a Star Party week. These telescopes are privately owned by people who organized with the Park to let them set up here. At night they focus on different objects and people can take a look, and Many people showed up.
10:27 heading to Cape Royal. If you go, DO NOT MISS THIS AREA.
Point Imperial first, at 8,803 ft elevation the Highest Viewpoint of the Grand Canyon.

The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided canyon carved by the Colorado River in Arizona, United States. The Grand Canyon is 277 miles (446 km) long, up to 18 miles (29 km) wide and attains a depth of over a mile. Grand canyon national park | Grand canyon skywalk
The canyon and adjacent rim are contained within Grand Canyon National Park, the Kaibab National Forest, Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument, the Hualapai Indian Reservation, the Havasupai Indian Reservation and the Navajo Nation. President Theodore Roosevelt was a major proponent of preservation of the Grand Canyon area, and visited it on numerous occasions to hunt and enjoy the scenery.

Cape Royal and Bright Angel Point are the most popular viewpoints (and for good reason – they’re spectacular).
Point Imperial, a short drive away (great for sunrise and sunset).

Drive to North Rim Grand Canyon Arizona
Drive up to the north rim of Grand Canyon national park is extreme unique and spectacular
Grand Canyon's North Rim Viewpoints / Look Outs
This video is from our visit to the Grand Canyon’s North Rim, Arizona.
As part of our October 2016 holiday to Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon in the USA, we twice visited the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. We hadn’t planned on this being part of our trip due to the distance from our hotel in Hurricane, and while it is quite a long drive, the first visit convinced us that a second visit was in order. But, instead of walking the trails, we decided we’d take it easy and walk to some of the viewpoints and take a few photos as we went.
The viewpoints that we visited in the video are Bright Angel Point (and smaller viewpoints on the way), Point Imperial, Vista Encantada and Roosevelt Point.
As I mentioned previously, a disk corruption meant that I lost many of my DSLR photos from this trip, so the photos (in the blog post) are from my iPhone.

The Beautifull Grand Canyon
Grand Canyon National Park is the United States' 15th oldest national park. Named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979, the park is located in northwestern Arizona. The park's central feature is the Grand Canyon, a gorge of the Colorado River, which is often considered one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. The park covers 1,217,262 acres (1,901.972 sq mi; 492,608 ha; 4,926.08 km2) of unincorporated area in Coconino and Mohave counties. As of 2015, the park received more than five and a half million recreational visitors, which is the second highest count of all U.S. national parks after Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Grand Canyon was officially designated a national park in 1919, though the landmark had been well known to Americans for over thirty years prior. In 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt visited the site and said: The Grand Canyon fills me with awe. It is beyond comparison—beyond description; absolutely unparalleled through-out the wide world... Let this great wonder of nature remain as it now is. Do nothing to mar its grandeur, sublimity and loveliness. You cannot improve on it. But what you can do is to keep it for your children, your children's children, and all who come after you, as the one great sight which every American should see.
Despite Roosevelt's enthusiasm and his strong interest in preserving land for public use, the Grand Canyon was not immediately designated as a national park. The first bill to establish Grand Canyon National Park was introduced in 1882 by then-Senator Benjamin Harrison, which would have established Grand Canyon as the second national park in the United States after Yellowstone. Harrison unsuccessfully reintroduced his bill in 1883 and 1886; after his election to the presidency, he established the Grand Canyon Forest Reserve in 1893. Theodore Roosevelt created the Grand Canyon Game Preserve by proclamation on 28 November 1906and Grand Canyon National Monument in 1908. Further Senate bills to establish the site as a national park were introduced and defeated in 1910 and 1911, before the Grand Canyon National Park Act was finally signed by President Woodrow Wilson in 1919. The National Park Service, established in 1916, assumed administration of the park.
The creation of the park was an early success of the conservation movement. Its national park status may have helped thwart proposals to dam the Colorado River within its boundaries. (Later, the Glen Canyon Dam would be built upriver.) In 1975, the former Marble Canyon National Monument, which followed the Colorado River northeast from the Grand Canyon to Lee's Ferry, was made part of Grand Canyon National Park. In 1979, UNESCO declared the park a World Heritage Site.
In 2010, Grand Canyon National Park was honored with its own coin under the America the Beautiful Quarters program
South Rim
A variety of activities at the South Rim cater to park visitors. The South Rim Drive (35 miles (56 km) is a driving tour split into two segments. The western drive to Hermit's Point is 8 miles (13 km) with several overlooks along the way, including Mohave Point, Hopi Point, and the Powell Memorial.[10] From March to December, access to Hermit's Rest is restricted to the free shuttle provided by the Park Service. The eastern portion to Desert View is 25 miles (40 km), and is open to private vehicles year round.
Walking tours include the Rim Trail, which runs west from the Pipe Creek viewpoint for about 8 miles (13 km) of paved road, followed by 7 miles (11 km) unpaved to Hermit's Rest. Hikes can begin
North Rim
On the North Rim there are few roads, however, there are some notable vehicle accessible lookout points including Point Imperial, Roosevelt Point, and Cape Royal. Mule rides are also available that go to a variety of places including several thousand feet down into the canyon.
Many visitors to the North Rim choose to make use of the variety of hiking trails including the Widforss Trail, Uncle Jim's Trail, the Transept Trail, and the North Kaibab Trail, the latter of which can be followed all the way down to the Colorado River, and to across to the South Kaibab Trail and the Bright Angel Trail, which continue up to the south rim of the Grand Canyon.
The Toroweap Overlook is located in the western part of the park on the North Rim. Access is via unpaved roads off Route 389 west of Fredonia, Arizona. The roads lead through Grand Canyon-Parashant National Monument and to the overlook.

BEST ROAD TRIP: Grand Canyon, Antelope Canyon, Zion, Horseshoe Bend | 4K
Road tripped to these incredible spots in one weekend! They are all amazing, but I cannot wait to get back to Zion National Park. This is easy to do in three days, but more time would allow more time at Zion and to see Bryce Canyon. Map of our route:
TOP TRAVEL TIPS:
*For the drive, we stayed one night at the North Rim West Cabins, then one night in Kanab, which has several hotel options.
GRAND CANYON NORTH RIM:
*Stay in the Western Cabins, they are worth it and are close to the Bright Angel Trail.
*There are far fewer view points to drive to on the North Rim than the South Rim, but give yourself time because they are very spread out.
HORSESHOE BEND:
*It was almost too hot here, and there is over 1 mile hiking.
*There's not too much to do here other than pictures.
ANTELOPE CANYON:
Go To: Navajonationparks.org to see every Antelope Canyon Tour
*There are several options for Antelope Canyon, but I HIGHLY RECOMMEND: Antelope Canyon X Taadidiin Tours (Hiking Tour). It is the cheapest ($38) and they do not rush you. The experience was amazing! For online reservations (were not needed for us):
ZION NATIONAL PARK:
*Stay at the lodge- it makes it so you don't have to wait in the long bus line in the morning.
*I would stay for at least 3 nights. You wont want to leave.
*Angel's Landing is not that strenuous or difficult, or even extreme, or scary. It's all pretty over hyped, but the view from the top is incredible.
What we did:

A Tour of North Rim Grand Canyon Overlooks | Grand Canyon National Park
Have you ever wondered how the overlooks at the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park compare to those of the South Rim? Then this video is the one you want to watch! We drive along Cape Royal Road and make stops at Point Imperial, Roosevelt Point, Walhalla Overlook, Angels Window and Cape Royal Point. The views are not to be missed!
The North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park stands at a higher elevation than the South Rim and offers gorgeous views of Bright Angel Canyon, the Grand Canyon, numerous plateaus as well as the San Francisco Peaks.
Due to the nature of the North Rim's remoteness, there is no shuttle service and travel to the overlooks must be done by your own vehicle.

A Great Grand Canyon Adventure Tour In Arizona USA
Grand Canyon in Arizona, is a natural formation distinguished by its layered bands of red rock and its vast scale, averaging 10 miles across and a mile deep along its 277-mile length. Much of the area is a national park. With sweeping vistas, it's a destination for hiking, mule rides, camping and aerial tours, plus white water rafting on the Colorado River.
The South Rim of Arizona's Grand Canyon is expensive and overcrowded, and there is usually a shortage of parking and accommodation, but that of course doesn't matter as the canyon is the most famous natural attraction in the USA and possibly in the world. No-one forgets their first sight of the Grand Canyon and it will never fail to impress or offer something new, no matter how often it is visited.
Ninety percent of tourists see only the south rim of the Grand Canyon, since it is easily accessible and the main road (AZ 64) parallels the canyon edge for some distance (see map) - here there is every conceivable facility, many superb overlooks and a choice of hiking trails. The north rim, 215 miles away by road, is much more remote and high enough in elevation to be closed during the winter months by snow, but fewer people mean more peace and tranquility and the views are just as good. The only other part of the Grand Canyon that may be approached via paved roads is Havasu Canyon, contained within the Havasupai Indian Reservation to the west, although a day's hiking is necessary.

North Rim - Grand Canyon in Depth Episode 7
There is something about the North Rim of Grand Canyon that invokes a sense of solitude and serenity. This is a place that invites you to slow down, to ponder, to feel your own innate creativity, and to fall in love with landscape. With Park Ranger Jessica Pope.
An audio described version of this video is located on this page:
Grand Canyon In Depth is a video podcast series that explores the natural and human history of Grand Canyon National Park. Join park rangers, scientists, and historians as they take us beyond the rim of the canyon to discover the diversity of life and the extraordinary beauty of Grand Canyon National Park.
Produced by the National Park Service in association with Bristlecone Media and Grand Canyon Association, the official nonprofit partner of Grand Canyon National Park.
North Rim of the Grand Canyon Arizona
From Zion National Park, we drove to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon and absolutely loved the drive! The fall colors were on display and the October morning light enhanced their beauty. The North Rim is more remote and less developed than the South Rim so it attracts far fewer visitors and provides a more serene and peaceful environment to take in the splendor of the canyon. The viewpoints, which are at a higher elevation than the ones at the South Rim, are just as spectacular, if not more so.
The North Rim forms the edge of the Kaibab Plateau, with elevation ranging from 8,000-8,800 feet above sea level. Access is via Hwy 67, through a majestic conifer forest and past scenic Jacob Lake. The drive is beautiful, even before you reach the national park. It's about 40 miles from Jacob Lake to the North Rim visitor center. You have to drive out the same way you came in at the end of your visit.
Because of the high elevation at the North Rim (8000 feet), it is suggested that one check with their doctor before going if they have respiratory or heart problems. Luckily, John and I were able to enjoy the Rim and walk it in several places.
We did a multi-park tour that included Arches National Park, Dead Horse Point State Park, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef National Park, The Grand Staircase Escalante Monument, Bryce Canyon, Red Canyon, Zion National Park, Hoover Dam and both the North and South Rim of the Grand Canyon . Videos for all these places are posted on our YouTube channel.
The music we used for this video is Acoustic Planet by Craig Chaquico.

If you go to the North Rim, you MUST take the short 5-minute walk from the Lodge patio to Bright Angel Point. The views are spectacular...and it is a great place to watch the sun set.
We were about 12 hours away from starting our Rim-to-Rim hike to benefit Wounded Warrior Project as part of our Steps for Soldiers Charity hike.

Grand Canyon north rim: little brother of the more famous south rim. Usually not much visited by tourist, because it is far from the most classic travel routes of the american southwest.
Grand Canyon North Rim Adventure Arizona HD
Hiking the North Rim of the Grand Canyon in Arizona is truly a thrill. The main difference between the North and South Rims is the view and the fact that there are a whole lot less people. This video was shot along the North Rim of the Grand Canyon by Larry Richardson for RichardsonArtPhotographyStore.com using an Apple iPhone 7.
Grand Canyon North Rim Drive
Ride along on the drive from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park to Jacob Lake, Arizona, a 45 mile drive with beautiful endless valleys and Ponderosa Pine forest. Includes video of burned areas with discussion of different types of fires and their effect on the forest. Commentary is both funny and informative, or incredibly annoying depending on your view. No Canyon views, and not G rated, I called somebody an SOB. He was supposed to pull over and let us by! Video ends as we leave the Kaibab Plateau and begin the drive to the South Rim.
