Lynchburg has a four-season humid subtropical climate (Köppen Cfa), with cool winters and hot, humid summers. The monthly daily average temperature ranges from 35.1 °F (1.7 °C) in January to 75.3 °F (24.1 °C) in July. Lynchburg is an independent city in the Commonwealth of Virginia in the United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 75,568. The 2017 census estimates an increase to 81,000.[3] Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains along the banks of the James River, Lynchburg is known as the City of Seven Hills or the Hill City.[4] In the 1860s, Lynchburg was the only major city in Virginia that was not recaptured by the Union before the end of the American Civil War.[5]
Lynchburg lies at the center of a wider metropolitan area close to the geographic center of Virginia. It is the fifth largest MSA in Virginia with a population of 260,320[6] and hosts several institutions of higher education, including Liberty University, the nation's largest non-profit university, as well as University of Lynchburg, and Randolph College. Other nearby cities include Roanoke, Charlottesville, and Danville.
Hacksaw Ridge, Desmond Doss Actual Lowering Point 100 Wounded Soldiers
Desmond Thomas Doss (February 7, 1919 – March 23, 2006 was a United States Army corporal who served as a combat medic with an infantry company in World War II. During his return to Okinawa in 1995 he showed his friend the actual spot where he lowered 100 soldiers to safety. This is the spot. He was twice awarded the Bronze Star Medal for actions in Guam and the Philippines. Doss further distinguished himself in the Battle of Okinawa by saving 100 men, becoming the only conscientious objector to receive the Medal of Honor for his actions during the Second World War. His life has been the subject of books, the documentary The Conscientious Objector, and the 2016 film Hacksaw Ridge.
Before the outbreak of World War II, Doss was employed as a joiner at a shipyard in Newport News, Virginia. Doss entered military service, despite being offered a deferment for his shipyard work, on April 1, 1942, at Camp Lee, Virginia. He was sent to Fort Jackson in South Carolina for training with the reactivated 77th Infantry Division. Meanwhile, his brother Harold served aboard the USS Lindsey.
Doss refused to kill an enemy soldier or carry a weapon into combat because of his personal beliefs as a Seventh-day Adventist. He consequently became a medic assigned to the 2nd Platoon, Company B, 1st Battalion, 307th Infantry, 77th Infantry Division.
While serving with his platoon in 1944 on Guam and the Philippines, he was awarded two Bronze Star Medals with a V device, for exceptional valor in aiding wounded soldiers under fire. During the Battle of Okinawa, he saved the lives of 50–100 wounded infantrymen atop the area known by the 96th Division as the Maeda Escarpment or Hacksaw Ridge. Doss was wounded four times in Okinawa, and was evacuated on May 21, 1945, aboard the USS Mercy. Doss suffered a left arm fracture from a sniper's bullet and at one point had seventeen pieces of shrapnel embedded in his body. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions in Okinawa.
Palisades Top Industry Practice Award
Entergy Nuclear employees at Palisades Power Plant took home the highest honor at the Nuclear Energy Assembly in the annual Top Industry Practice Awards. Entergy's Palisades team was the maintenance category winner and also earned the top honor, the B. Ralph Sylvia Best of the Best Award, over 14 other category winners at the meeting held in San Francisco by the Nuclear Energy Institute.
The coveted Top Industry Practice awards rank among the nuclear industry's most prestigious recognitions. The employees won for developing a new instrument called a gimbaled head for inspections of the reactor vessel. Working with the vendor AREVA, this team innovation is one that will also be used across the industry since it vastly improves data collection for this important maintenance inspection.
We are very proud of our Palisades employees and their persistent spirit in building this device over a number of years until it resulted in a breakthrough advance for Entergy that ultimately now benefits the entire industry, said Entergy Nuclear president and CEO, John Herron. Herron also serves as the Chief Nuclear Officer for the Entergy Nuclear fleet, the second largest nuclear fleet in the U.S. operating or providing management services to facilities in Arkansas, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Nebraska, New York and Vermont.
What is a gimbaled head?
The gimbaled head performs inspections on the inside of the reactor head around the mechanisms that lift and lower control rods. The gimbaled head is a flexible assembly for reading and writing information scanned from the surface to a rigid magnetic recording disk called a transducer and the device is delivered to the area needing inspection by a computer-controlled, remotely-operated robot. The information is collected and transmitted to a computer for analysis.
Giving back to the community
The team's monetary reward was donated to the following Michigan area organizations: Harbor Habitat for Humanity in Benton Harbor; the Michigan chapter of the American Nuclear Society to support a local teacher workshop; and the Children Advocacy Center of Ottawa County. A portion of the funds were also donated to Habitat for Humanity in Lynchburg, Va., where AREVA team members reside.
With hundreds of entries in this nationwide competition, our power plant is very honored to have captured the top award, noted site vice president for Palisades, Chris Schwarz. Moreover, it points to the fact that our industry is recognizing nuclear professionals who have taken the initiative to develop better practices making the nuclear energy industry one of the safest, most efficient and most productive in the world. Our employees commitment to excellence has helped secure the value of nuclear energy as a green, affordable and safe source of electricity for our country.
Nuclear Energy Institute Awards recognize innovations
Established in 1994, the Nuclear Energy Institute's awards recognize nuclear energy operators for innovations that improve safety, economics or plant performance. Entergy Nuclear has been honored with 20 awards since the program's inception.
We started working on the new inspection device nearly five years ago. To receive this level of recognition feels great for our team and our plant. Palisades is a place that supports exploring new ideas and implementing the best solutions for our operational challenges, stated Chad Main, project manager and team leader for the Palisades winning effort.
Palisades Nuclear Power Plant is located in Covert, Michigan and has a maximum dependable capacity of 798 MWe becoming operational in 1971.
Entergy Corporation is an integrated energy company engaged primarily in electric power production and retail distribution operations. Entergy owns and operates power plants with approximately 30,000 megawatts of electric generating capacity, and it is the second-largest nuclear generator in the United States. Entergy delivers electricity to 2.7 million utility customers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Entergy has annual revenues of more than $10 billion and more than 15,000 employees.

Pumphouse Park Gothic Waterworks Historic Tour in Richmond, VA
This beautiful park nestled against the James was built in 1882 and provided drinking water for the City of Richmond for over forty years. Pumphouse Park is part of the James River Park System.
The building has since been lost to wear and tear. It's undergoing a gradual renovation. Little known, there are Saturday tours available from onsite staff 10AM-4PM. Have a tour of this beautiful Victorian Gothic architecture of the old waterworks.
There are three canals running east-west in the Park. The most northern one is the Power Feeder canal, or feeder canal, built in the early -1880s along with the immense Pump House. This feeder Canal ran the turbines for pumping water from the same canal up to Byrd Park. It is fed by a split from the Kanahwa canal to the west of the Pump House. This canal is used today mainly for showing full scale bateau replicas. It is crossed by a cor-tan service bridge just adjacent to the west end of the Pump House building, and the Power feeder canal contains a CSO pipe, which is visible in low water conditions.
The second, or middle canal, is the part of the Kanahwa Canal system, which was started in the 1820s, to circumvent the rapids near Richmond’s growing industrial production center. In fact, in the Central Business District today, the Kanahwa Canal led to a large Turning Basin, located in the vicinity of the Omni Hotel today. The Pump House Park is also known as the Three Locks Park, because it contains two granite canal locks, which are about 3 miles upstream from the Turning Basin downtown.
The lowest canal, which currently does not contain water (but it does contain water and sewer lines) is the beginning point of the James River canal system, which was the first canal system in the United States. This canal, begun in 1786-17899, was to connect Richmond with Lynchburg and parts of Virginia further west, opening the frontier to commerce and further settlement. George Washington, considered the father of this and other canal systems, passed through here when he traveled this section in 1791. A small granite archway can be seen here, commemorating his visit and involvement, and the park has constructed a small overlook platform and placed informational signage to interpret this historic structure and the site.

Desmond Doss was born in Lynchburg, Virginia, to William Thomas Doss (1893–1989), a carpenter, and Bertha Edward Doss (née Oliver) (1899–1983),] a homemaker and shoe factory worker. His mother raised him as a devout Seventh-day Adventist and instilled Sabbath-keeping, nonviolence, and a vegetarian lifestyle in his upbringing. He grew up in the Fairview Heights area of Lynchburg, Virginia, alongside his older sister Audrey and younger brother Harold.
Doss attended the Park Avenue Seventh-day Adventist Church school until the eighth grade, and subsequently found a job at the Lynchburg Lumber Company to support his family during the Great Depression.
Before the outbreak of World War II, Doss was employed as a joiner at a shipyard in Newport News, Virginia. Phantom of the Dam
Jordan Lake N.C is a man made lake in N.C.The New Hope River Valley, now home to the corporate world of Research Triangle Park, has been the site of a broad range of cultures for more than 10,000 years. Archaeologists have explored the remains of 450 prehistoric and historic sites in the area and have uncovered many Native American artifacts. The land was settled by Scottish Highlanders in the 1740s, and it saw action in both the Revolutionary and Civil wars.
Following a disastrous hurricane, which struck the Cape Fear River Basin in 1945, Congress directed the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to undertake a comprehensive study of water resource needs in the area. The project, then known as New Hope Lake, was authorized in 1963 and construction began in 1967. In 1973, the name of the project was changed to B. Everett Jordan Dam and Lake in honor of the former senator from North Carolina.
Jordan Lake's 46,768 acres are not only a popular source of recreation. They also provide the water supply for surrounding cities, flood and water quality control, and fish and wildlife conservation.

The Thin Light of Freedom: The Civil War and Emancipation in the Heart of America
While a destructive and bloody war raged across Virginia in the aftermath of Gettysburg, free black families sent husbands and sons to fight with the U.S. Colored Troops. In letters home, even as Lincoln commemorated the dead at Gettysburg, they spoke of a war for emancipation. In The Thin Line of Freedom, acclaimed historian Edward L. Ayers, discusses the end of slavery, Reconstruction, the Freedmen’s Bureau, and new society struggling to emerge. A book signing will follow the program.
Ghosts of War - KSM S01 EP50 - Civil War Idolatry/Confederate Pride
Today, Virginia celebrates Lee-Jackson Day. This brings up a good question: Are people flying the flag of a defeated cessation attempt in America's bloody history doing so out of southern pride, or underhanded racism? Does their intent make a difference? We welcome Powers Chandler back as our guest to hear his explanations about the nuances of the Civil War, the multitude of flags, and the philosophy of fighting for something you may not even support.

STORYLINE:
The first 25-tonne steel column for the new Freedom Tower in New York was installed on Tuesday at Ground Zero, another step towards building a new office tower to replace the World Trade Centre destroyed in the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.
The 31-foot (9.5 metres) high white steel column, painted with an American flag and the words Freedom Tower, was picked up by a crane and set into place on the southern edge of the planned 1,776-foot (541 metres) building.
Politicians and workers at the site cheered as the column was installed shortly after 11:30 a.m. (16:30 GMT).
Today the steel rises, the Freedom Tower rises from the ashes of September 11th, and the people of New York and the people of American can be proud, said New York Governor George Pataki.
A second column, about a foot (30 centimetres) taller and covered with signatures from steelworkers and politicians in Virginia, was installed a short time later.
Officials hoped to raise a third column later on Tuesday.
In the next two weeks, more columns will be set around the perimeter, including two covered with signatures of September 11 families, and steelworkers, architects and politicians.
Officials said the signature-free column that was installed on Tuesday was a slightly different length than the others and was long ago scheduled to be installed first.
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the new tower will honour those who lost their life on September 11th and will symbolise the strength of New Yorkers.
We are stronger and more united than ever. We face our future confident and unafraid. And rising from the heart of the World Trade Centre site, the Freedom Tower will symbolise the spirit of our city and our nation - inspiring, soaring, and undefeated, said Bloomberg.
By next spring, builders say the jumbo steel columns will rise to street level, about 70 feet (21 metres) from the bottom of Ground Zero.
The 27 columns, among the largest made in the world, were forged in Luxembourg, then shipped to Lynchburg, in the US state of Virginia, to be fabricated so they could be installed at the foundation.
The entire tower will eventually be built with 45,000 tons of steel, builders say.
Virginia residents and steelworkers signed one of the columns earlier this month and September 11 victims' relatives and first responders wrote messages on another on Sunday.
