After Methanol Poisonings, Czechs Seek Safety Tests For Booze
In September, hard alcohol tainted with methanol left 28 people dead in the Czech Republic and sickened many others, prompting a nationwide ban on the sale of spirits. Police have since traced the contaminated drinks to their source and lifted the prohibition in bars and restaurants, but some consumers are still unsure about the safety of the bottles in their liquor cabinets. One Prague laboratory is relying on new technology to put drinkers' minds at ease. Video by Nikolay Pavlov, RFE/RL

Partial lifting of ban on hard liquor in Czech Republic
(27 Sep 2012)

3. SOUNDBITE (Czech) Leos Heger, Czech Republic Health Minister:
We consider today's measures as a turning point in this affair, and the beginning of steps towards improvement.
4. Wide tilt up from bar to nearly empty shelves
5. Close of non-prohibited spirits on shelves
6. Wide tilt down of racks of prohibited prohibited spirits
7. Close of prohibited spirits
8. SOUNDBITE (English) Jonathan Weinstein, Manager of Pricny Rez Restaurant in Prague:
It is hard to say, there were definitely nights where I could see it was a big problem. When people are only limited to buying beer and wine it definitely is a problem. When you have a group of 10 or 15 people who start to consume shots. It can be ten, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 shots which we obviously weren't selling. So I'd say I am not going to give a percentage but it (sales) was definitely affected.

9. Wide of new spirit labels being printed
10. Close of labels
11. SOUNDBITE (Czech) vox pop, Anna Rasmussen, Prague resident:
It was the right decision that prohibition happened but now I am not so sure whether it is a good idea to lift the ban. I really don't know whether they have found the right people who caused it (the contamination) or not.
12. Wide of new printed spirits labels coming out of machine
13. Close of labels being put into box
14. SOUNDBITE (Czech) vox pop, Tomas Filbacher, Prague resident:
It's good that they restricted selling alcohol produced before the year of 2012. It would make no sense to prolong the prohibition.
15. Wide of new labels and woman packing them
STORYLINE:
Czechs will soon be able to once again drink more than just beer and wine after the government announced an easing on a ban on spirits in the country.
Since mid-September the sale of spirits with an alcohol level of 20 percent or more were prohibited due to some of the country's low-grade stock being contaminated with methanol.
We consider today's measures as a turning point in this affair, and the beginning of steps towards improvement, said Czech Health Minister Leos Heger.
The government banned the sale of spirits with more than 20 percent alcohol content on September 14 because of a bout of methanol poisoning that killed 26 people.
The ban hit the service industry hard with an estimated loss in sales of 250 (m) million Czech Crowns per day (around 13 million US dollars).
Jonathan Weinstein, who manages a Prague restaurant and bar, said it was hard to calculate accurately the loss the ban caused to his business.
When people are only limited to buying beer and wine it definitely is a problem. When you have a group of 10 or 15 people who start to consume shots. It can be ten, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 shots which we obviously weren't selling. So I'd say I am not going to give a percentage but it (sales) was definitely affected, he said.
Government officials now say that any spirits produced before 1 January 2012 are considered safe and can be sold again starting on Thursday.
Any alcohol produced in the country afterwards must have new seals on them printed by the government this week.
It was the right decision that prohibition happened but now I am not so sure whether it is a good idea to lift the ban. I really don't know whether they have found the right people who caused it (the contamination) or not, said Prague resident Anna Rasmussen.
Police say they have discovered the source of the poisoning but don't know the full extent of how far it spread.

3. Close of spirit bottles on shelf

5. SOUNDBITE: (English) Jonathan Weinstein, Manager of Pricny Rez:
At this point there is nothing to be done. I mean, what can I say? It just came out tonight, I just was watching the news. How long this could last? I don't know. If it were to last a month or two months, of course that's a big problem. If it last through the weekend, we'll survive. It will be okay. I really don't know what the ultimate repercussion here will be.
6. Mid of British men walking down street on holiday in Prague
7. SOUNDBITE: (English) Glen Smith, on holiday in Czech Republic from Ipswich, England:
I think spirits are produced all over the world. If there is an issue with one particular type of spirit, that is a massive overreaction from the health minister. So, to ban all spirits is complete, complete b******s.

9. SOUNDBITE: (English) Marcus Banham, in Czech Republic on holiday from Ipswich, England:
I drink a lot of liquor. I like my liquor so I find it a bit strange. It's a bit weird. I will boycott vodka, accordingly, but for the rest of the spirits I'm fair game. I'm fair game and I'm going to get involved.
10. Close of bartender's hand pouring liquor back into bottle
11. Wide of bar
12. SOUNDBITE: (Czech) Barbora Kubatova, resident of Prague:
If this crisis situation continues, I will stop drinking shots. During the day, I drank two shots and now I am afraid, but it is only because of the mania about it. I think that whoever is responsible for this situation will have to pay.

STORYLINE:
The Czech Republic has banned the sale of spirits with more than 20 percent alcohol content as it battles a wave of methanol poisonings that has already killed 19 people.
Health Minister Leos Heger said on Friday the ban was effective immediately and applies nationwide.
It covers all possible sales locations, including restaurants, hotels, stores and the Internet.
Jonathan Weinstein, manager of Prague restaurant and bar Pricny Rez, said he was worried about the ban's effect on business.
How long this could last? I don't know. If it were to last a month or two months, of course that's a big problem. If it last through the weekend, we'll survive, Weinstein said.
Kiosks and markets had earlier been banned from selling spirits with more than 30 percent alcohol content.
But Heger said the measure has not been effective enough because the majority of people who have been poisoned bought the toxic alcohol in restaurants, bars and stores.
Many tourists visiting Prague on holiday have found the ban an excessive measure.
Glen Smith, who travelled from Ipswich, England for a stag party in Prague said, if there is an issue with one particular type of spirit, that is a massive overreaction from the health minister.
In a brief announcement late on Friday, Heger said the measure was taken as the death toll from the poisonings reached 19 and the first person was hospitalised in Prague.
Local resident Barbora Kubatova said that she might stop drinking liqueur.
If this crisis situation continues, I will stop drinking shots. During the day, I drank two shots and now I am afraid, but it is only because of the mania about it. I think that whoever is responsible for this situation will have to pay, Kubatova said.
Dozens of people have been hospitalised, some in critical condition after drinking vodka and rum laced with methanol.
The problem appears largely centered in northeastern Czech Republic.

Lyrics/Text:
Late at night, nine to five, and I might just see what is there, what's inside.
What I see, who is me and I hear something weird, and I can't hold tight.
It's that sound, underground, that I found and I look everywhere, all around.
No one's there, no one cares, no one dares to go there, beyond all your doubts.
And I'd rather be something than see you be someone.
I'd rather see you trembling than tell you why.
Try crawling
into the sea of sound,
try drowning
in the hole in the ground.
Try walking - we could find a reason
in the shoes that you can feel,
try shocking - we're each other's poison me, an electric eel.
So it goes again.
Late at night, black to white, everyone's out of sight, watching warning signs,
you're the knight, but not quite, let's stay out of the fight, and drink burning wine.
it's just fair to stay bare, pull my hair, don't you dare let it stay behind,
I'm the queen, you're a teen, let's not get too obscene, never get defined.
And I'd rather say nothing than tell you what's fine.
I'd rather watch you burning than pass you by.
So it goes again.

New Model Army - Purity, Lucerne Music Club, Prague, Czech Republic - 13th October, 2013
So myself and my goodwife flew to Prague for a Romantic weekend, only to find out via a flyer on a cable box, that fellow Yorkshiremen The New model Army were also in town...needless to say we had to go along and see them. It was a decent gig, plenty of interest from the crowd, but less shenanigans, clogs, kicking and pyramids than when I last saw NMA in 1994. Maybe it's because the crowd got older, or maybe it was because we were in Prague. Anyway, here is footage of NMA playing their track 'Purity'.

Czech Republic - Absinth is growing in popularity
T/I 10:11:05
The potent liquor Absinth, which is generally banned due to alleged
side-effects such as blindness, hallucinations and brain disease, is growing in international popularity.
The drink is available in Prague and is attracting greater numbers of people to the city's cafes. A bottle costs about 18 dollars in a shop and a shot costs two dollars in a pub.
Radomil Hill, owners of the Hills Liquer Distillery, started production again in 1990.
