The Chicago metropolitan area, often referred to as Chicagoland.
Chicago was incorporated as a city in 1837.
The name Chicago is derived from a French rendering of the Native American word shikaakwa, translated by some sources as wild leek or wild onion or wild garlic.
The first known reference to the site of the current city of Chicago as Checagou was by Robert de LaSalle around 1679 in a memoir.
The first known non-indigenous permanent settler in Chicago was Jean Baptiste Point du Sable. Du Sable was of African and French descent and arrived in the 1780s. traditionally stated to be Haitian, from the French colony of Saint Domingue He is commonly known as the Founder of Chicago.
The municipal flag of Chicago has four red six-pointed stars
1. The first star represents Fort Dearborn.
2. The second star stands for the Great Chicago Fire of 1871
3. The third star symbolizes the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893
4. The fourth star represents the Century of Progress Exposition (1933–1934)
Chicago's nicknames include: The Windy City, the City of Big Shoulders, the Second City, and The City That Works.

Chicago | Study Tour 2015: Religion in American Society (Part 5/5)
PART 5: CHICAGO
In Chicago, the group visited a conservative syngogue, took a tour around the changing neighborhood parishes of the city, and circled back to the civil rights movement by visiting the Chicago Defender.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
In 2015, a group of American studies students from Leipzig University, Germany, and Jagiellonian University Kraków, Poland went on a study tour to the US to learn about the role of religion in American society. After a preperatory seminar concerned with religion in the US, the group applied their knowledge in field research.
Travelling to the cities of Atlanta, Birmingham, Nashville, and Chicago, as well as an Amish community in southern Indiana, the group visited religious communities and institutions, scholars, NGOs, as well as important historical sights to find out just how central religion still is in people's everyday lives.
This five part series documents this trip.
Places to see in ( Chicago - USA )
Places to see in ( Chicago - USA )
Chicago, on Lake Michigan in Illinois, is among the largest cities in the U.S. Famed for its bold architecture, it has a skyline punctuated by skyscrapers such as the iconic John Hancock Center, 1,451-ft. Willis Tower (formerly the Sears Tower) and the neo-Gothic Tribune Tower. The city is also renowned for its museums, including the Art Institute of Chicago with its noted Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works.
Steely skyscrapers, top chefs, rocking festivals – the Windy City will blow you away with its low-key cultured awesomeness. It's hard to know what to gawp at first. High-flying architecture is everywhere, from the stratospheric, glass-floored Willis Tower to Frank Gehry's swooping silver Pritzker Pavilion to Frank Lloyd Wright's stained-glass Robie House. Whimsical public art studs the streets; you might be walking along and wham, there's an abstract Picasso statue that's not only cool to look at, but you're allowed to go right up and climb on it. For art museums, take your pick: impressionist masterpieces at the massive Art Institute, psychedelic paintings at the mid-sized Museum of Mexican Art or outsider drawings at the small Intuit gallery.
Loosen your belt – you've got a lot of eating to do. On the menu: peanut-butter-and-banana-topped waffles for breakfast (at Stephanie Izard's Little Goat), a chicken, apple and cranberry hot dog for lunch (at Hot G Dog), and 20 courses of centrifuged, encapsulated molecular gastronomy for dinner (at Grant Achatz' Alinea). You can also chow down on a superb range of ethnic eats from Vietnamese pho to Mexican carnitas, Polish pierogi and Macanese fat rice. Still hungry? Order a late-night deep-dish pizza.
Chicago is a maniacal sports town, with a pro team for every season (two teams, in baseball's case). Watching a game is a local rite of passage, whether you slather on the blue-and-orange body paint for a Bears football game, join the raucous baseball crowd in Wrigley Field's bleachers, or plop down on a bar stool at the neighborhood tavern for whatever match is on TV. Count on making lots of spirited new friends. Should the excitement rub off and inspire you to get active yourself, the city's 26 beaches and 580 parks offer a huge array of play options.
Chicago knows how to rock a festival. Between March and September it throws around 200 shindigs. The specialty is music. Blues Fest brings half a million people to Millennium Park to hear guitar notes slide and bass lines roll, all for free. During the four-day Lollapalooza mega-party, rock bands thrash while the audience dances in an arm-flailing frenzy. Smaller, barbecue-scented street fests take place in the neighborhoods each weekend – though some rival downtown for star power on their stages (oh, hey, Olivia Newton-John at Northalsted Market Days).

Day arrived, the city is noisy am. Our Memorial Day for the Remembrance Day. The parade begins in the middle of downtown. Memorial Day is a solemn rather than joyful celebration like. The area has plenty of high school ROTC participation. Students boast a polished sharpening skills. Today is not listening to words shape the horse along. Eat her nose. I am wounded in the war. Let shots of people marched in a wheelchair pour applause.

Crown Fountain at Millennium Park by Crystal Fountains - Chicago, Illinois, USA
Standing watch over Millennium Park for over a decade, Crown Fountain has grown into one of Chicago’s most recognizable landmarks. Envisioned by Spanish sculptor Jaume Plensa, Crown fountain is a unique blend of art piece, water feature and public space, helping attract over 5 million visitors annually to the city’s waterfront. We are proud to have acted as water feature consultants on this job and contributed to the creation of its custom gargoyle spout effects.
The fountain has truly become part of the surrounding community as both an interactive play destination and a representation of Chicago’s citizens, over 100 of whom have their faces prominently displayed on its 50 foot high LED screens. Crown Fountain’s longevity and popularity are a testament to what can be achieved with the proper vision, team, and hard work; and iconic project that will continue to have a lasting impact on a space for years to come.

Traveller Justine Shapiro takes an exhilarating journey around the heartland of the United States, from skyscrapers, hip hop and gangsters in the city to breathtaking scenery, old traditions and adventure in the countryside.
Justine begins in Chicago, the home of the very first skyscraper. She finds an inventive mode of transport to take her to some of the city’s most impressive architecture – the zippy Segue scooter!
After a hearty Chicago speciality – a towering Italian beef sandwich – Justine hooks up with the ‘Untouchables’ tour to learn more about one of Chicago’s shady characters from the past, gangster Al Capone, and visits the site of the Valentine’s Day Massacre.
Justine heads out of town on one of America’s most iconic freeways – Route 66 – in a stylish convertible. She stops off at Springfield, Illinois, for a meeting with another American icon from history, Abraham Lincoln!
Next stop for Justine is Berlin – a town in the Ohio countryside, home to members of the Amish community. These religious people aim to keep their lives devout and simple and so Justine at the tramcar cafe on Route 66shun modern conveniences, such as cars and electricity. Justine spends time with a family to learn more about their beliefs.
Justine takes a short flight to Detroit, where Motown music originated. Justine gets down to a different beat with some of the city’s youth, however – hip hop. The city also contains theHenry Ford Museum and Justine takes a look at the history of the automobile and takes a ride in an early Ford model.
Justine draws her journey to a close by enjoying the great outdoors – she heads for the shores of Lake Superior in Wisconsin. The world’s largest lake, it contains ten percent of the earth’s freshwater. After a rigorous swim, kayak and trek, Justine enjoys the day’s catch around the campfire. In her final destination, Deer River, Justine meets up with some living historians to experience what it would have been like for the first travellers from Europe settling by the Great Lakes, and takes time to reflect on her diverse adventures in the Midwest.

Found WW2 Period Allied Altered Photograph German Occupied Poland 1939 Ingra
Sometimes you find rattlesnakes when you kick over stones....
Still have the Christmas cold, sorry for the sniffling.
I found this photograph odd while searching out equipment and uniform markings in the photographs of an otherwise fairly standard book on WW2. This one caught my eye as it had a copyright date of 1943 which being ostensibly written during the wartime might have something unusual that didn't occur in the dozens of other books I already have or have seen.
On Page 127 of the Book World War II: an Illustrated History by LTC. Frank Monaghan, J.G Ferguson and Associates. Chicago, Ill. 1943, appears an unusually doctored photo with an even more unusual caption. Unfortunately the picture turns out to be all too real as the basic research unveils, and leaves far more questions than answers. Please leave any information you feel is relevant, but be respectful.

Donald Trump Remarks to the Polish American Congress FULL Speech 9/28/16
Donald Trump Remarks to the Polish American Congress. Donald Trump is pledging if elected to work with Poland to strengthen NA.
Trump is speaking to Polish-Americans in Chicago. He's praising Poland for paying its fair share to collective defense under NA. Trump had been criticized earlier in the campaign for describing NA as obsolete and questioning the U.S. commitment to the alliance. But Trump says he's helping NA by putting pressure on it to focus on terrorism.
Trump also touched on other campaign themes, promising he'll be the greatest president for jobs that God ever created.
USA: Huge meteor paints sky green over Lake Michigan
A Lisle Police Department car dashcam captured a large meteor streaking across the sky above Lisle, a town near to Chicago, in northern Illinois, early on Monday morning.
The large green-hued fireball was seen lighting up the morning sky at around 01:26 AM local time (7:30 GMT). People in the Illinois area of Rogers Park, as well as in South Shore, could observe the spectacle, but sightings were also reported in Wisconsin, Kentucky and Ontario, Canada.
According to the Field Museum in Chicago, the meteor eventually fell into Lake Michigan.

Trump Meets with Polish Americans
(28 Sep 2016) Donald Trump says, if elected, his presidential administration would be a true friend to Poland.
Trump met with an organization of Polish Americans during a campaign stop in Chicago Wednesday.
He thanked the country for its contributions to NATO and defended Polish politicians who have resisted a mass influx of refugees.
Trump also touched on the UK's decision to leave the European Union.
In a way we're very similar to what happened over there. We want our independence back, we want our freedom back, he said.
