Florida Travel: Visit Old Spanish Sugar Mill at DeLeon Springs State Park
Take a morning paddle down a beautiful spring fed river and then refuel up by cooking your own pancakes at a griddle embedded in the middle of a well-worn pine table at this unique eatery located inside DeLeon Springs State Park. The server brings unlimited pitchers of batter and syrup for $4.95 a person. Pancake additions, from apples to pecans, as well as breakfast meats, can be had for an added charge. Diners who prefer a more traditional hands-off dining experience can order pre-cooked breakfast offerings, as well as sandwiches and salads. Don’t expect white tablecloths here. The dining room is rustic, snug and authentic old Florida.
Tip: This is a small and popular place, so waits can be long on weekend mornings. Hiking trails, swimming, taking a boat ride or just resting your eyes on the blue spring waterfall can help pass the time.
De Leon Springs State Park Home Movie
Footage of DeLeon Springs, Florida, donated by Lois Jackson. The footage shows wildlife and waterskiing at De Leon Springs State Park, located at 601 Ponce Deleon Boulevard. The film also shows footage of a visit to The Oldest Sugar Mill in America and scuba diving in the springs.
Present-day DeLeon Springs was first inhabited as early as 8000 B.C.E. by local indigenous tribes. Spanish explorers, including possibly Juan Ponce de León (1474-1521), passed through the area during the 16th century. In 1783, the Spanish returned to establish the Spring Garden plantation, where corn, cotton, and sugar cane were grown. The Seminole tribe also began to settle in the area around the same time and was able to successfully sack the plantation during the Second Seminole War. General Zachary Taylor (1784-1850) regained the land in 1838. After the United States gained ownership of Florida, Colonel Orlando Rees built a sugar mill and corn mill in DeLeon Springs. However, many of these facilities were destroyed by the Union Army during the American Civil War. Nonetheless, DeLeon Springs became a popular tourist destination beginning in the 1880s, mostly due to its advertisement as a fountain of youth.
