Around Town: Beaufort
Beaufort has seen a lot in its long, colorful life.
This coastal community, established in 1709 and incorporated in 1723, is the third-oldest town in North Carolina (only Bath and Edenton are older). In the three centuries since its founding, pirates, freed slaves, fishermen, and a host of other travelers have all sought shelter in this quiet corner of Carteret County.
Today, some 4,000 people live there year-round; come summertime, this town swells with folks visiting from across the state and around the world.

1st of Dec 2015 Trolley Tour of Historic Beaufort in South Carolina
After we left Hilton Head Island we went north to Port Royal Island and went on a horse drawn trolley tour around the historic port city of Beaufort. There was some beautiful hones built there in the late 1700's and 1800's, the city was founded in 1711, a long time before Australia was bumped into by Captain Cook. It was very interesting, we even passed under an Oak Tree that was used as a hanging tree for anyone who fell foul of the law. I learnt what a Giddy-Up was, houses had a concrete or stone step out front to make it easy to mount your horse or get up into a carriage that pulled along side.

After SPIN! 1/25/15 - What are the benefits of dredging Beaufort Inlet?
Question to Doug Raymond – We spend a lot of time talking about creating jobs in our state but in our Port at Morehead City we can potentially lose many jobs due to shoaling. Twice recently restrictions have been put on ships entering Beaufort Inlet. Ships are now limited to a keel depth of 34 feet, a restriction that will keep many from entering the port and cause business to go to other ports. Congressman Walter Jones said we’ve got money to send to build roads and bridges in Afghanistan but not enough to take care of infrastructure in America. You live in this section of this state. What’s your response to this issue?
