Port Gamble, WA - Adventures in RV Living
Welcome back, Today on 3tailsRV we take you on another RV adventure. So come along as we explore the Port Gamble on the Kitsap peninsula of Western Washington.
Port Gamble was once a bustling logging town that hasn’t changed much since the 1850s. Today Port Gamble is a popular tourist destination, and is filled with unique textile shops, books and antique stores, tea-rooms, cafes, and even a historic theater. Many of the shops are located in the original New England Victorian-style homes that have been restored and preserved. The centerpiece is the Port Gamble General Store & Cafe. Housed in the same historic location as it has been since the time of serving the active mill until 1995, it currently offers a stop for delicious meals, delightful gifts and makes this a must stop destination.
Port Gamble is a National Historic site and prior to its closure in 1995, was the oldest continuously operating sawmill in North America. Take time during your visit to stop by the museum and learn about the history behind this quaint waterside town.
Port Gamble is a great place to start or stop an outdoor recreation adventure on the Kitsap Peninsula. Olympic Outdoor Center offers kayak, bike rental and offers a boat launch at the location of the old mill site.

The Dark Days of Washington – Territorial Wars 1855-1856
For students at Cedarcrest and Cougar Mountain middle schools, the Washington Territorial Wars of 1855-1856 sprang to life thanks to teacher Abbi Wonacott. As students learned about the history that occurred where their schools now stand, they took their class projects to heart and created something Wonacott said deserved to be seen by a wider audience. Entitled, The Dark Days of Washington, the two schools' combined exhibit journeyed all the way to the Washington State Fair where it touched the hearts of many who saw it.

Indian Nations Rising: Celebrating Native Youth
The Harvard Project on American Indian Economic Development is pleased to announce the opening of Indian Nations Rising: Celebrating Native Youth, an exhibition featuring four Honoring Nations programs that highlight youth and family-oriented successes in tribal governance. The exhibit will be on view at the National Museum of the American Indian from July 12, 2017 through September 11th, 2017.
To celebrate the unveiling of Indian Nation Rising exhibit at the Smithsonian, Honoring Nations hosted an intimate luncheon with more than 70 tribal officials, policy makers, and youth leaders, in attendance. In a keynote address, Senator Tom Udall, a Senate Committee on Indian Affairs member, praised the work of each program saying, “I am delighted to be here today to honor Native American projects that are making a real difference in real people’s lives on a daily basis. I went into politics to make a difference. Our honorees are making a difference – in the lives of Native children, families, and their tribes.” Senator Udall continued, “We honor four projects today. Projects whose leaders identified a problem, rolled up their sleeves, figured out solutions, and set about the hard work of getting something done… I am honored to honor you.”
Based at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government, Honoring Nations is administered by the Harvard Project on American Indian Economic Development and is the nation’s largest repository of inspiring stories of success in tribal governance. Since 1999, the program has recognized the achievements of 130 outstanding initiatives. The Honoring Nations stories are of real people – Indigenous people – tackling the challenges of (re)building healthy, vibrant communities. Through their work and vision, honored programs provide a strong foundation for the future of Indian Country.
The Honoring Nation’s Indian Nations Rising exhibit features the following awardees:
Potawatomi Leadership Program, Citizen Potawatomi Nation
Despite the tribe’s growing prosperity, many young Citizen Potawatomi Nation citizens lacked knowledge about the tribe’s government. In response, tribal leadership implemented the Potawatomi Leadership Program. This six-week internship brings together college-aged Potawatomi citizens and educates them about the Nation’s government, culture, and economic development efforts. At its core, the program strives to cultivate talent from within to ensure that younger generations are prepared for roles in the future governance of their tribe.
Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribal Child Welfare Program, Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe
In the 1980s, the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe lost many of their children to foster care outside the tribal nation. In response, the Tribe embarked on a series of initiatives to keep its community intact. First, they established their own Child Welfare Program. They then worked with the State of Washington to broaden the definition of “family” to include “tribe.” Today, they operate their own Title IV-E program, giving the Tribe control over federal child welfare funds. Children now stay within the community, and all services are infused with S’Klallam values.
Ohero:kon “Under the Husk” Rites of Passage, Haudenosaunee Confederacy
Like other Native nations, the Haudenosaunee grapple with a legacy of colonialism and fragmentation of both land and community. Perhaps no group is impacted more than the youth. Translating as, “Under the Husk,” Ohero:kon reconstructs ancient coming-of-age knowledge through ceremony, ritual, and teachings. The seven-year curriculum assists youth as they acquire cultural knowledge to prepare them for adulthood. Through Ohero:kon, the Confederacy is coming together, for the youth, for each other, and for the future of the six nations.
School-Based Health Centers, Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes
Situated in the “most unhealthy county in the state” and confronting staggering indicators of poor health, the Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes of the Fort Peck Reservation decided their children deserved better. Leaders made a bold move that is as simple as it is logical: they established full-service health clinics in the schools on the reservation. Today the kids have ready access to high quality health care that includes dental care, mental health services, nutrition counseling, and medical care and they miss fewer days in class.

The Queen Anne Mansion, constructed in Carthage, Mo. for Curtis Wright, was built in 1891 as an enticement to lure his wife and family to Carthage, Missouri from their hometown of Connersville, Indiana. Curtis Wright brought along his European furniture craftsmen to carve a grand staircase, elaborate fireplace surrounds and exquisitely detailed moldings and trim. These masterpieces remain in the Mansion today, along with the original Moon window and leaded and stained glass windows. Each room is appointed with elegant antiques and furnishings evoking the feeling of Victorian splendor.
Remarkably, the Queen Anne was disassembled and moved to Eureka Springs in 1984, where it was expertly reconstructed as a tourist attraction (tour home).
The Queen Anne Mansion underwent a major restoration from 2006-2010 and reopened as a museum and event venue in May 2010. Since then, more than 15,000 visitors, area residents, curators and historians from all over the United States and abroad have been drawn to admire the results of the extraordinary restoration. In 2011, The Queen Anne Mansion was awarded Business of the Year as a museum attraction by the Eureka Springs Chamber of Commerce. It was closed to the public in December 2011 as further work began in preparation for its use as a Private Residence Club, complete with a professional staff to provide a 5-star level of service.
While the restoration has preserved the atmosphere of turn-of-the-century living, the state-of-the-art updates throughout the property provide the comfort, beauty and functionality expected by today's travelers. This includes installation of high-end kitchens, luxurious bathrooms in each suite, and in the Kelley House, a private spa for owners and their guests.

Art Impact International 2016
Art Impact International 2016 – Art To Illuminate the World, The Premiere, opening reception January 9th, 2016 at the Pepco Edison Place Gallery in Washington DC.
This is our first annual Art Impact International art exhibition. We are honored to have as our special guest artist, Ambassador Dr. Joseph E. Edmunds, OBE of St. Lucia. The Ambassador is among an eclectic group of fifteen high caliber artists presenting sixty-five works of art from ten countries including Brazil, China, Greece, Italy, Mexico, Nigeria, Togo, St. Lucia, Trinidad & Tobago, and the USA.
Ambassador Edmunds, Bethel Aniaku, Larry “Poncho” Brown, Andrea Clement, Tarver Harris, Festus Izevbigie, Hubert Jackson, Daniel Kathalynas, Vicki Marckel, Pasquale Monaco, Ernani Silva, Nia Tavlarides Stratos, Gloria Valdes “Tarasca”, Khalid Thompson, and Sally Tsou shine the light of their creativity to benefit humanity, inspiring communities and our leaders for the good of our nation and the world.
As NY State Senator Kevin Parker states, “Arts & culture has an intrinsic value to our communities and our society at large as it illuminates our lives and enriches our world. Art is also one sure way to learn about other cultures and broaden our horizons. It is for these reasons that I am and will always be an avid
supporter of the creative industry.”
There will always be unrest in the world. We are also expecting that there will always be light. Artists are the messengers of light and the embodiment of our culture. We present this international convergence, a transcending of boundaries to reach the good spirit of men and women across the globe.
