Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival 2015
Port Townsend Washington, located where Puget Sounds meets the Straits of San Juan del Fuca, hosts the Wooden Boat Festival each September, with hundreds of yachts, two-and three-masters, pleasure craft and kayaks built of wood. You can paddle around the marina full of boats, watch the sailboat race, and best of all, you can go aboard most of the boats and talk with their crew and owners. Master boat builders and wood carvers give lessons and even compete in a team boat building competition during the festival.
Port Townsend is also replete with art galleries and eateries, making it a travel destination for those from afar and a day trip for Seattleites. And in the evening after dinner, the beer garden at the festival has dancing and, well, beer.

Kayaking to the Goat Island Gun Emplacements
Goat Island lies at the mouth of the Swinomish Channel, which connects La Conner with the Skagit Bay. In addition to a rustic Washington Water Trails campsite, the island contains some interesting and huge gun emplacements gradually being overtaken by moss and madrona trees..
Put in at the La Conner boat ramp, directly under the Swinomish Channel bridge, and paddle South. Keep going straight ahead as the channel turns, and head for the orange marker on the long rock jetty. Pass through the Fish Hole and turn right, down the Skagit River to Goat Island. The campsite is in a nice bay on the west side of the island.
The gun emplacements are reached by paddling around to the North side of the island, back into the Swinomish Channel, and looking for a nasty little beach next to a knife-edge cliff jutting out into the water. Look for a dark hand-line ascending the very steep trail, and at the top go another 100 feet through the woods to the spooky concrete bunkers and moss-covered gun mounts.
Historylink.org and fortwiki.com have great write-ups about the Fort Flagler history and guns from WW I through WW II. Here's an excerpt...
Triangle of Fire - The Harbor Defenses of Puget Sound (1897-1953)
HistoryLink.org Essay 7524 : Printer-Friendly Format
Admiralty Inlet was considered so strategic to the defense of Puget Sound at the turn of the century that three forts were built at the entrance with huge guns creating a Triangle of Fire that could theoretically thwart any invasion attempt by sea. Fort Worden, on the Quimper Peninsula at the extreme northeastern tip of the Olympic Peninsula, sits on a bluff near Port Townsend, anchoring the northwest side of the triangle. Fort Casey, on Whidbey Island, sits on Admiralty Head almost directly across Admiralty Inlet from Fort Worden. Fort Flagler anchors the southwest side from a bluff on Marrowstone Island. Two additional fortifications, at Fort Ward and Middle Point, were strategically located at the entrance to Rich Passage to protect the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard at Bremerton. Fort Whitman, located on Goat Island in Skagit Bay was positioned to guard Deception Pass and Saratoga Pass, the back entrance into Puget Sound. Together, these fortifications constituted the Harbor Defenses of Puget Sound. All six former U.S. Army forts are now owned by the State of Washington and have become state parks.
The Waterhaus, A Tiny Sustainable Prefab Home GreenPod
GreenPod Development is a prefab home builder in Port Townsend, Washington. As the name suggests, GreenPod places an emphasis on sustainable and healthy homes. Their houses are built from structural insulated panels, ensuring a well-insulated and tight building envelope. All the interior finishes are chosen to promote healthy indoor air quality, avoiding any product that might outgas volatile organic compounds. Clay wall finish is an option for customers who want to avoid paint entirely. The fabrics are made from organic naturally antimicrobial plant fibers that won’t support the growth of mildew or mold.
With the requirement that the homes be narrow enough for road transport, many one-bedroom prefabs end up with similar rectangular floor plans having an open living area at one end, the bedroom at the other end, and the bathroom in between. GreenPod’s 450 ft2 (41.8 m2) Waterhaus model follows that formula but with a couple of novel twists.
Rather than a normal rectangular bathroom, the Waterhaus architect designed a T-shaped layout. The bathroom is narrower at the shower, giving a bit of extra space to both the bedroom and the living area. The extra space in the bedroom corner creates a reading nook by the window, while a niche in the living room can be used for an optional fireplace or storage cabinets. Check out the floor plan in the gallery to see how this was done.
Corner windows are great because they let daylight reflect off the flanking walls, lighting the room more evenly, and because they emphasize the long diagonal dimension of the room, making it seem larger. A unique aspect of the Waterhaus floor plan is the small inset area at the back of the house. This indent allows both the living room and the bedroom to have corner windows that are located towards the middle of the house rather than at the far corners. One benefit is that the view is directed away from any neighboring houses. A second benefit has to do with furniture placement. With the windows pushed towards the middle of the house, you can still enjoy the view from a couch or bed placed against an end wall. That helps to shorten circulation paths through the house.
Clerestory windows are another way to get more even light levels while maintaining privacy. Both the living area and the bedroom have clerestory windows bringing in daylight from three sides. Optional translucent glass panes in the passage doors help with lighting the hallway.
The United States has seen a lot of prefab and modular home builders come and go over the years. GreenPod Development has bucked the trend, surviving even the 2007-2009 housing market crash. That may be due in part to their flexible approach, offering customers the option of either factory-built modules or on-site construction using prefab panels. A modular build could be the better choice for remote locations where skilled tradespeople are hard to find, while a site-built home might be the only choice if lenders are unwilling to finance a modular home, as happened following the housing crash.

Virtual Tour: Phog Bounders Antique Shop; Astoria, Oregon
Not my favorite antique shop, but certainly unique. I was bored, the library closed at 5pm and they unplug the power cord to the WiFi, which only left me with internet connection to McDonalds or the college library. All the internet connections are throttled to slow speed. Either that or Astoria still uses dial-up connection to the internet. I'm not sure what they are doing wrong, all I see is a slow internet that makes video viewing a terrible experience, even for Youtube.

The Inn at 97 Winder in Detroit, Michigan
The Inn at 97 Winder is a beautiful and historic boutique inn in downtown Detroit.
I spent one night at the inn during my visit to Detroit and I had a wonderful time at the property.
The inn features 9 different uniquely decorated rooms and the interior of the inn has been designed in a historic and classical way giving off a very charming and welcoming vibe.
I stayed in the loft room on the top floor of the inn and it was spacious, well-suited for two people, and there was a beautiful wrought iron staircase that led up to a loft seating area with an incredible view of the Detroit skyline.
I definitely prefer this style of boutique hotel accommodation compared to staying at a chain hotel because you get a much more memorable experience.
Overall, I would definitely recommend checking out the charming Inn at 97 Winder if you're planning a trip to Detroit and looking for somewhere to stay in the city.

GOOD MORNING AMERICA'S HOMEPAGE:
Lackawanna Cut-Off - Part 22: Thomas T. Taber III Interview
Join us as we talk with a man that has been called the greatest living railroad historian, Tom Taber III. Mr. Taber, who is 90 years old, is the editor and co-author (with his father, the late Tom Taber Jr.) of the 3-volume compendium on the Lackawanna Railroad: the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad in the 19th and 20th Century, widely regarded as one of the best books ever written about an individual U.S. railroad. During the interview, Mr. Taber will tell us about: the state of railroading (including Amtrak and in Europe) and of railfanning; his experience in firing a steam locomotive during his youth; serving as a railroad engineer testing diesel locomotives in Canada during the Korean War; and even what he thinks about the Lackawanna Cut-Off project. This is a rare opportunity to hear the man himself--the author of 30 books--talk about both himself and his dad (who was the only person to have a commuter train named after him - the Tom Taber Express).
Una's Lecture with Paul Chan: The Bather's Dilemma
Artist Paul Chan is the winner of the 2014 Hugo Boss Prize, awarded biennially by the Guggenheim Foundation to an artist who has made a visionary contribution to contemporary art. In his Una's Lecture, Chan explores the figure of the bather — a visual trope with a rich history, and a prominent theme in his own work — as an embodiment of pleasure that is linked to the act of renewal.
