ATV Across Newfoundland 2017 - Day 8 - Robinson to Port Aux Basques
This is day 8 or our trip to cross Newfoundland on our ATV. This section takes you from Robinson to Port Aux Basques. A beautiful ride and shorter day then most but with some excursions you can have a lot of fun. We climbed Suger Loaf for a spectacular view of the Codroy valley.
For this video I was riding my CFMoto CForce 800
Conal was riding his Can-AM Outlander 850
We both rely on our Garmin 64ST

Catching the Ferry to Newfoundland - Canada RV Travel Vlog
Awesome boondocking at the lighthouse near Fortress of Louisbourg, and catching the ferry to Newfoundland! Action packed RV travel vlog today as we enjoy our last days in Nova Scotia, before journeying to our last province, Newfoundland.
Welcome back friends! Another few great days out here RVing on the far East coast. Picking up the RV vlog last at that awesome abandoned campground, we prepared to say good bye to the Cabot trail (for now) and venture further into Cape Breton Island. After finding out we had to reserve the Newfoundland Ferry in advance, we found ourselves camping at Walmart in Sydney, Nova Scotia (Canada????).
Sydney was a decent sized town split into North Sydney where the ferry area was, and regular Sydney which was the regular town and near Cape Breton University as well. We wanted to get out and make the most of a day to kill before catching the ferry and that we did. We read a review for Louisbourg and it said if you're even considering going just check it out and so we did. It had a boondocking site to park the class c RV at for the night even at the first lighthouse site in Canada, 2nd in North America! It was a beautiful and rugged site on the Atlantic cliffs and we absolutely loved it, and had it to ourselves too.
The next morning we ventured into Louisbourg itself. The Fortress of Louisbourg was French occupied but had many battles back and forth in the area with the British in the early 1700s over territory and very importantly the cod fishing we later learned about. This whole national historic site has actors dressed up in 1700s attire and giving you tours and talking about their daily lives as if they were actually from that time period. The area is so spread out through the initial Forest to get in you actually take a bus from the admission area to the fort itself even. Admission is free to National Historic sites too if you have your parks pass so dont forget it on your dash you'll want it!
Inside the fort they have souvenir stores, but also restaurants with 1700s meals if your looking for a sit down course meal, otherwise you can buy from a coffee shop as well. They had guided tours and employees spread all over the massive area to explore at your own pace and talk to people and learn more as well. Overall it was super cool, unexpected and definitely worth the minor 30 minute drive from Sydney and the Newfoundland ferry area in our opinion.
After Louisbourg it was time to prepare, and then say farewell to mainland Canada (if you can even count Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island as mainland..) and board the ferry to Newfoundland. The ferry ride from North Sydney to Port Aux Basques is 7 hours, and we boarded it at 5:45PM, and didn't get in to Newfoundland until 1:30 AM! A lot better than the midnight sailing time we thought we had to catch at least!
The Ferry to Newfoundland was much higher quality than I was expecting. It had a fancy gift shop, restaurant, buffet, little convenience store snack shop, arcade, some live music, roof too views, rooms available for rent if you want private space, and a movie theater that was playing old Disney movies! Talk about luxury hey. Sometimes I guess they even have WiFi on the Newfoundland ferries but sadly we wern't that fortunate this go around. The ferry also provides kennel services (at a cost likely) but we choose to let Cat house sit the RV since it wasn't too long and she had her windows open. Still a nice option for dog owners though, I think you can even visit your dog in the kennel but don't quote me on that 100%. The ferry did get hot even at night and very humid, so also be prepared if you're taking it on a hot summer evening. Yet I'm sure it can be cold with an Atlantic breeze some days too.. the ferry to Newfoundland sure did make a great kick start to RVing our last Province we plan on visiting before we begin to RV across Canada all over again, this time from East to West, with less time!
Stay tuned for next episode friends and behold the beauty of Newfoundland. It's so rugged and yet so full of dense lush vegitation, and moose! We are so glad we chose to visit Newfoundland in the end even if the ferry was a little pricey. Definitely a unique experience.

Corner Brook, Newfoundland
Recorded October 5, 2016
Corner Brook is a city located on the west coast of the island of Newfoundland in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. Located on the Bay of Islands at the mouth of the Humber River, the city is the largest population centre in the province after St. John's.
In this video I sail into town on the Caribbean Princess. After docking I take a day-long shore excursion to Gros Morne National Park. The video concludes with the sail away from Corner Brook.
Gros Morne National Park is a world heritage site located on the west coast of Newfoundland. At 697 square miles, it is the second largest national park in Atlantic Canada. The park takes its name from Newfoundland's second-highest mountain peak (at 2,644 feet) located within the park. It is the eroded remnants of a mountain range formed 1.2 billion years ago. The park provides a rare example of the process of continental drift, where deep ocean crust and the rocks of the earth's mantle lie exposed.

ATV expedition to the Gaff Topsails, Newfoundland and Labrador (by Peter Bull, Newfoundland)
This past week, my neighbour Gavin and I went to Buchans Junction for an ATV adventure to the Gaff Topsails. Our guide was Fred Thorne of Red Indian Lake Outfitters and Tours. Fred took us in over the old Newfoundland rail bed which is now the T'Railway. The T'Railway is a linear provincial park stretching for almost 900km from St. John's to Port aux Basque and is the eastern end of the Trans Canada Trail.
We were not alone on the trail, meeting many ATV enthusiasts from Mainland Canada. These adventurers had left their vehicles in North Sydney, Nova Scotia and driven their quads on the Marine Atlantic Ferry. Once in Newfoundland they drive across the T'Railway from Port aux Basque to Argentia (or vice versa) catching the ferry back to the Mainland at the other end of the Island. There are few places in the world where one can go on such an ATV adventure. Many of the mainlanders we met had taken this trip over the T'Railway more than once. For one Nova Scotian, it was his 14th trip.
The Island of Newfoundland was made for ATVs and the Gaff Topsails is but one highlight along the route. We didn't see any moose or caribou, but there were plenty of partridge (ptarmigan). We also took in some history, visiting the quarry used for building the bridge abutments across the Island. The granite at the quarry was also used to build the railway station in St. John's.
Our perfect day of quading was topped off by a fantastic meal of moose, salt pork and onions fried up by Fred. With full stomachs we took the 67km (41 mile) trip back to Buchans Junction. After experiencing the beauty of the Topsails in the summer, I can't wait to return in winter and experience the area on snowmobile.
