The city of Hood River is the seat of Hood River County, Oregon, United States. It is a port on the Columbia River, and is named for the nearby Hood River. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 7,167.
Hood River (originally called Dog River) post office was established (named by Mary Coe) at the site of the present city on September 30, 1858,
and the city itself was incorporated in 1895. Originally, the city was part of Wasco County, but it became the seat of Hood River County when the county was first established in 1908.
Hood River is at the confluence of the Hood River and the Columbia River in the heart of the Columbia River Gorge. The city is about north of Mount Hood, the tallest peak in the state. Located at the transition zone between wet temperate rainforest to the west, and dry shrub-steppe desert to the east, Hood River has a moderate climate with rainy winters and warm summers, although rainfall there is somewhat less than Portland and other nearby areas in the Willamette Valley. Hood River averages around of precipitation a year, while Cascade Locks, west, receives over , and The Dalles, east, less than . The area is known for its consistently high winds channeling down the Columbia River Gorge.
Temperatures for the year as a whole are slightly cooler than most other low-elevation towns in the region, especially at night due to air drainage off the surrounding mountains. As a rule of thumb, Hood River temperatures are similar to those of Portland in the summer, but more like The Dalles in the winter.

Hood River Bridge southbound
The Hood River Bridge, officially the Hood River-White Salmon Interstate Toll Bridge is an historic bridge over the Columbia River between Hood River, Oregon and White Salmon, Washington. The bridge features a through truss vertical-lift span and a long series of deck truss approach spans. The bridge is unusual because the deck truss approach spans maintain the open steel grating present on the moveable span, which was used to prevent moveable bridges from flooding and also to allow wind to pass through a moveable bridge when raised. Additionally, this bridge was originally a double-decker bridge, carrying railroad on the lower level. This can be discerned by the position of the lift span - in that it appears to be above the “lowest” position even when closed. The lower level was removed in the early 2000’s following the closure of the railroad.
The Hood River Bridge, in addition to the Bridge of the Gods upstream, are two of a very small number of privately owned toll bridges remaining in the United States. This means that the bridges are not owned by any state or federal agency, and instead a private firm, which does not receive any tax income, must raise money through tolls to maintain the bridge.

Getting Gill Nets off the Columbia River
A slightly updated version of the original Gill Netting PSA we did for CCA Oregon. We fixed a typo on the listing of ESA fish.
Sponsored by the Oregon chapter of the Coastal Conservation Association, this Public Service Video tells the story of the historic agreement, between Oregon and Washington states, to remove commercial gillnets from the lower Columbia River. Unfortunately the gillnet lobby and ODFW Wildlife commission have proposed scraping the plan at the 11th hour (2016 is the last year of transition) and have basically squandered over $10M is fees from sport fisherman to get this done.
Why do we make a Public Service Announcement? - Sometimes footage can't wait another season to be seen as part of a show. We create PSAs for the critical issues we film in hopes of providing another tool for the people and organizations driving change, to tell the story until it airs as an Eco-Moment on the show.
Cargo Ships Floating Up and Down the Columbia River; Oregon, Washington, mouth
Watch commerce happen before your eyes comfortably at the Warrenton, Oregon Marina. There is good parking and you can almost see the ships just entering the river to continue their long journey to the nearest port, which is most likely Portland. Then, from there the merchandise are loaded up on trucks and taken to their respective stores.
