Portage to Girdwood, Alaska: Portage Glacier Road, Seward Highway
Here's a look at the beautiful drive from Portage, Alaska (near the end of the tunnel to Whittier) back to the Seward Highway (Alaska Route 1), then north to the Alyeska Highway into Girdwood, and on to the Alyeska Resort.
MyDrivelapse.com and Takemytrip.com provide driving videos and stories to help you plan your trip. Check out hundreds of videos on my YouTube channel. Subscribe if you like it! Dozens of new videos are on the way in the coming weeks.
I made this trip in May/June, 2016. Video shot with a Brinno TLC-200 Pro time-lapse camera, mounted on my roof with a homemade magnetic case. I travel with two Brinno cameras - one facing forward, the other in reverse. Sometimes the reverse camera captures better video (fewer raindrops and bugs hit the rear-view lens).

Portage Glacier Cruise in Girdwood, Alaska
Portage Glacier is on the Kenai Peninsula 50 miles southeast of downtown Anchorage. A boat ride across Portage Lake is required to view the glacier. The round-trip cruise to the glacier aboard the mv Ptarmigan took about an hour. It was the end of May and the weather was pleasant but a strong breeze on Portage Lake dropped the temperature some 10 degrees relative to shore.

Alaska's Portage Glacier
No trip to Alaska is complete without an excursion to a glacier. If you're in Anchorage the quickest, easiest and cheapest glacier to see is Portage Glacier, which is a short drive down Seward Highway. Portage Glacier Cruises offers a short boat trip to the edge of the glacier, and it's worth the price tag. The cruise gets you inches from the face and near the back of Portage Lake where waterfalls, icebergs and glaciers are present. It's a much different scene than you'll see in the parking area.
For more information on the cruise and updated pricing please visit:

Portage Glacier Hike
The Hike out to Portage Glacier is only about 2.5 to 3 miles out across Portage Lake to the glacier from the parking lot at Begich Boggs Visitor Center in South Central Alaska. The experience and view are worth the 3-4 hours you might spend there. Even small children are making the journey under supervision. There is wind often times, it can be cold, so dress accordingly. Check with conditions before heading out as we get closer to spring. Micro spikes might be a good idea, but you can also run into snow drifts that can slow the walk down. The video is only 7.5 minutes long, so take a look. If you like the video tap the thumbs up button. Thanks for watching, be safe.
