MP Mary Creagh on London incident
(22 Mar 2017) RESTRICTION SUMMARY: AP CLIENTS ONLY
ASSOCIATED PRESS - AP CLIENTS ONLY
London - 22 March 2017
1. SOUNDBITE (English) Mary Creagh, UK Member of Parliament (Labour Party):
We were on our way to vote and we were going down the escalators. We could already see a substantial police presence in the palace (of Westminster) and in Portcullis House (part of the Parliamentary Estate, next to Westminster Palace), which is where I have my office. What we then saw was a crowd of people running towards us saying 'get out of the building, shots have been fired.' At that point we just all went out of the building, but it's a very secure building but we could only get out one at a time. So I called on to the security guy to open the doors and let us leave the building as fast as we could go. We couldn't go back to our offices because both escalators were down and we had to leave the building as soon as possible. As soon as we knew shots had been fire,d we knew it was a very serious situation indeed and we all just waited outside. I then ran to Westminster Station control (room) and told them they had to shut the tube as fast as possible because my concern was about people going about their business and wandering into a terrorist situation, which is what we've had here today. I am deeply shocked and our thoughts are with the brave police officers who stand on those carriage gates every day, keeping our democracy, keeping this country safe and our thoughts are with them and their families this afternoon.
(Reporter off-camera: And what do you understand is the extent and the scale of today's incident?)
I've spoken to an eye witness who saw a silver vehicle coming over Westminster (Bridge), mounting the pavement, knocking down pedestrians as they went. My understanding is five, six, seven people have been knocked down on Westminster Bridge. We also understand that a car rammed into the carriage gates and that a police officer was assaulted by one of the occupants of that vehicle who made his way onto the grounds of the palace armed with knife, machete, I'm not sure and that one person has been killed, is my understanding.
