Madeira-PONTA DE SÃO LOURENÇO 2019!
The path of 4 km, lasting 2:30 hours, explores the peninsula of São Lourenço. The path is undulating, is in good condition and allows to observe the landscapes of the tip of the island.
The trail runs along the Ponta de S. Lourenço, the easternmost peninsula on the island of Madeira, named after the caravel of João Gonçalves Zarco, one of the three discoverers of the island of Madeira.
This peninsula is of volcanic origin, in its majority basaltic, being also existent formations of calcareous sediments. In its follow-up, we have two islets: the islet of Barley, the Half or the Desembarcadouros, the islet of Ponta de S. Lourenço, the Farol or Fora.
The peninsula is classified as a partial natural reserve and the islet of the Desembarcadouro full nature reserve. The entire terrestrial area and the marine area adjacent to the North coast, up to the depth of 50 m, are part of the European Network of Sites of Community Importance - Natura 2000 Network.
The semi-arid climate and exposure to the northern winds determine the development of undergrowth and the absence of trees, differing from the rest of the island and constituting a true natural heritage. Here we find the basal floor of the island of Madeira in a better state of conservation and several rare and endemic plants.
Of the 138 species of plants currently identified on the peninsula, 31 are exclusive to the island of Madeira (endemic plants). At the fauna level stands out one of the largest colonies of Gulls (Larus cachinnans atlantis) of the Region, which nests on the Islet of Desembarcadouro.
Along the trail, you will often see several species of birds, such as the Strain-Paths (Anthus bertheloti madeirensis), the Pintassilgo (Carduelis carduelis parva), the Canary-land (Serinus canaria canaria), the Kestrel (Falco tinunculus). At this site, protected seabirds such as Cagarra (Calonectris diomedea), Roque-de-castro (Oceanodroma castro), Black-footed (Bulweria bulwerii) and Common Stilt (Sterna hirundo) are also nesting. In addition to the birds there is a species of terrestrial reptile the lizard (Lacerta dugesii), the only terrestrial reptile on the island, which is abundant in this area. Another interesting aspect of this site is the existence of a large number (24) of endemisms of terrestrial molluscs, commonly known as snails.
In the sea, with some luck, you will be able to observe the seal, with common name Lobo-marine (Monachus monachus).
At the end of the route there is a building, the house of Sardinha (family name of the former owners), giving support to the vigilantes of the service of the Natural Park of Madeira, responsible for the surveillance of this area. At the end, you can take a dip in the Sardine pier. In the line of the horizon we have to the South the Desertas islands and to the North the islands of Porto Santo.

Grutas de Sao Vincente, Madeira 18 Dec 13
Heading north on the first day, the famous volcanic caves 'Grutas de Sao Vincente' had to be on the itinerary -
(text copied and pasted, in case you hadn't guessed) 'They were formed there 890,000 years ago from a volcanic eruption in Paul da Serra that was down to the sea. Thus, the outside, exposed to lower temperatures, solidified rapidly, while the interior continued to flow with many gases, forming a series of lava tubes, which today constitute the caves of São Vicente.
Were first reported in 1885 by the local population, and opened to the public October 1 of 1996, being one of the first caves of volcanic origin to be opened to the public in Portugal'
8 Euros per adult to get in and be taken on a tour around the caves, together with a (mediocre) audio visual presentation and a very informative 'Volcanism Centre', which unfortunately we didn't have much time to take in properly.

The Atlantic Crossing #6: Taxi Tour in Funchal at Madeira Island
Crossing the Atlantic Ocean on a cruise ship from Recife in Brazil to Lisbon in Portugal. First time in Funchal, Madeira Island, Portugal!
Funchal is the largest city, the municipal seat and the capital of Portugal's Autonomous Region of Madeira. The city has a population of 100,526 and has been the capital of Madeira for more than five centuries. Today Funchal is a major tourist town, with hotels, port, and an international airport Funchal Airport (FNC), located in the nearby municipality of Santa Cruz. Besides the city of Funchal, tourist destinations include: Ribeira Brava, Curral das Freiras, Porto Moniz, Santana, the Laurisilva forest, a UNESCO Natural Site, in the center of Madeira Island and the beaches in Porto Santo island. There is also a passenger gondola lift (Funchal Passenger Ropeway), that transports people from the lower section of the city to the suburb of Monte.
The ship is the MV Bleu de France, owned by the Spanish company Pullmantur through its subsidiary Crossieres de France and in partnership with the Brazilian agency CVC. On this video, we pass by the city of Fortaleza.
The trip, also called the crossing, took 12 days. We departed from Recife, the main city in the Northeast coast of Brazil, with stops in Fortaleza (Brazil), Praia (Cabo Verde), Santa Cruz de Tenerife (Ilhas Canarias, Spain) and Funchal (Ilha Madeira, Portugal), arriving early morning in Lisbon.
This Part 1 video only shows the night departure from Recife and following videos will show all the stops we made. Watch many videos of the Bleu de France cruise ship on youtube.com/diogok There is a video showing many areas inside the Bleu de France and others showing the beautiful places the ship has been during the last Brazilian summer season, like Recife, Fernando de Noronha, Natal, Fortaleza, Salvador and Maceio, before returning to Marseilles in France for the beginning of the European season. This is the last season for this ship as Bleu de France, as it was sold to the British company SAGA and soon will become Saga Sapphire.
The Republic of Cape Verde is an island country, spanning an archipelago of 10 islands located in the central Atlantic Ocean, 570 kilometres off the coast of Western Africa. The Cabo Verde islands, covering a combined area of slightly over 4,000 square kilometres (1,500 sq mi), are of volcanic origin and while three of them (Sal, Boa Vista and Maio) are fairly flat, sandy and dry, the remaining ones are generally rockier and have more vegetation. Because of the infrequent occurrence of rainfall in Cabo Verde the overall landscape is not particularly green, despite what the country's name suggests (verde is Portuguese for green).
