Postman's Park - London UK
A truly enchanting little green secret in the 'city', this park has a wall on which painted tiles pay tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for others.
The Postman Park Memorial, London - a tribute to self-sacrifice
The Memorial to heroic self-sacrifice is a public monument in Postman's Park in the City of London, commemorating ordinary people who died saving the lives of others and who might otherwise have been forgotten. Made famous in the film Closer, it is perhaps the saddest place in London.

Postman's Park
Postman's Park is a public garden in central London, a short distance north of St Paul's Cathedral. Postman's Park opened in 1880 on the site of the former churchyard and burial ground of St Botolph's Aldersgate church and expanded over the next 20 years to incorporate the adjacent burial grounds of Christ Church Greyfriars and St Leonard, Foster Lane, together with the site of housing demolished during the widening of Little Britain in 1880; the ownership of the last location became the subject of a lengthy dispute between the church authorities, the General Post Office, the Treasury, and the City Parochial Foundation. A shortage of space for burials in London meant that corpses were often laid on the ground and covered over with soil, thus elevating the park above the streets which surround it.

Postman's Park: Watts Memorial to Heroic Self Sacrifice
Postman’s Park is a very special place that celebrates those remarkable acts of bravery that history would have otherwise forgotten. It is a national treasure initiated by G. F. Watts OM RA (1817-1904) that is modestly constructed yet overwhelmingly powerful, like the stories of the everyday heroes that it celebrates. It is not a grand statue of monumental proportions, but a simple and beautiful memorial set at eye level with a simplicity that speaks to everyone. It still retains a unique atmosphere which has continued to inspire artists and writers since its creation in 1899.

The Altab Ali Story Play
The Altab Ali Story Written by Julie Begum
Director: Mukul Ahmed
Dramaturge: Patricia Cumper
Producer: Pauline Walker
Cast

Dabir Miah/Postman: Delwar Hossain Dilu
Grandmother: Tonni Khan
Altab Ali: Porag Hasan
This heart-breaking story about the death of Altab Ali oscillates between a village in Sylhet, Bangladesh and a flat in East London and dramatizes the historic moment in 1978 when his mother is given the devastating news. The airmail letters to his family back home with descriptions of life in a foreign land are keenly anticipated but everything changes with the arrival of an ominous envelope from one of Ali’s friends. This senseless murder is the catalyst for a mass anti-racist movement from the Bengali community; the first ever seen in Britain, culminating in a demonstration of 7,000 people marching to Downing Street via Hyde Park with his coffin. Though airmail letters are no longer a primary means of communication, the anger conveyed ‘par avion’, and the impact of this senseless murder live on, both for his family and the community at large.
