Breaking the Silence, Breaking the Cycle: Honoring Youth Voices Part II
Presenters: Maegan Ray, Jeri Brunoe
As a continuation of Breaking the Silence, Breaking the Cycle: Honoring Youth Voices Learning Community Part I, presenters will moderate a panel of youth who are involved in prevention efforts in their own communities. Youth will share their experiences and expertise as they continue to volunteer and sustain prevention efforts locally. The learning community will focus on engagement approaches geared toward youth interests, preferences, and creativity. Training objectives will include:
- Increasing knowledge about youth-led prevention efforts through virtual conversations with youth leaders across the country.
- Enhancing the skill level of program leadership and staff to utilize approaches for creating a sense of belonging and empowerment among youth.
- Building on existing strategies to promote ongoing youth involvement on prevention efforts.
Maker culture
The maker culture is a contemporary culture or subculture representing a technology-based extension of DIY culture. Typical interests enjoyed by the maker culture include engineering-oriented pursuits such as electronics, robotics, 3-D printing, and the use of CNC tools, as well as more traditional activities such as metalworking, woodworking, and traditional arts and crafts. The subculture stresses new and unique applications of technologies, and encourages invention and prototyping. There is a strong focus on using and learning practical skills and applying them creatively.
