The Phimai Historical Park protects one of the most important Khmer temples of Thailand. The temple complex is located in the town of Phimai, in the province of Nakhon Ratchasima, in the north-eastern part of Thailand.
The construction of Hin Prasat Phimai dates to the late 11th century and was built after a large part of the Buddhist Kingdom of Dhvaravadi was conquered and became the domain of the Khmer Empire. The temple lies 260 km northwest of Angkor ( in present day Cambodia) and had a direct link to the Kymer capital.
Interestingly, it is evident from the statuary of Phimai that the temple was built as a Mahayana Buddhist sanctuary, and in this, Phimai is unique. All other Kymer templers such as Angkor Wat and nearby Prasat Phanomrung, were built as Hindu temples

Phimai Historical Park (Phimai Temple, Phimai Sanctuary, Phimai Castle, Phimai Ruin) is the largest Khmer sanctuary in Thailand located in the middle of Phimai about 100 kilometers from PhanomrungPuri Boutique Hotels and Resort in Nangrong, Buriram. It was presumably constructed to be a Mahayana Buddhist religious site during the 16th -- 17th Buddhist century in the reign of Khmer's King Suryavarman I in Ba Phuon style similar to Phanom Wan Sanctuary and Phanom Rung Sanctuary. However, this sanctuary differs from the two sites in which it is situated toward the south, assumed to be facing Mueang Phra Nakhon, the center of the ancient Khmer Kingdom (currently Cambodia). Khmer settlements were generally away from rivers as they had their own reserving ponds called Barai. In spite of that, Phimai is located on the bank of Moon River due to the presumption of prior settlement from Dvarvati artifacts.
The outstanding structural characteristic is the main Prang or pagoda which is Thailand's grandest pagoda in stone sanctuaries with 28 meters high. It is made entirely of white sandstone, which is rare sandstone found only in important places, and is different from the porches (Kopura) and walls that are made primarily of red sandstone.
A major annual festival at Phimai Historical Park
• Phimai Festival is held annually in November at Phimai Historical Park, Chakaraj Waterway, and other tourist attractions in Phimai. The highlight of the festival is Phimai Light & Sound at Phimai Historical Park called Niramit Karma over Moon River which is the show presenting the story from archeological documents, history and inscription about belief and civilization in the lower-northeast. With the charming performance and dazzling light & sound technique, tourists will be impressed with numbers of scenes such as the construction and maintenance of the sanctuary, god worship, Pi Fah Dance, Chiang Khong Dance, ancient boxing, Ramayana Mask Drama -- Indrajit Shooting Nagabas Arrow Episode, Phimai Puri Dance, Chaiyavarman VII Procession, celebrating fireworks, etc.

Inscriptions name the site Vimayapura (which means city of Vimaya), which developed into the Thai name Phimai.
The first inventory of the ruins was done in 1901 by the French geographer Etienne Aymonier. The site was put under Thai governmental protection by announcement in the Government Gazette, Volume 53, section 34, on September 27, 1936. Most of the restorations were done from 1964 to 1969 as a joint Thai-French project. The historical park, now managed by the Fine Arts Department, was officially opened by Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn on April 12, 1989.
In the aftermath of the fall of the Ayutthaya Kingdom in 1767, attempts were made to set up five separate states, with Prince Teppipit, a son of King Boromakot, attempting to establish Phimai as one, ruling over eastern provinces including Nakhon Ratchasima. As the weakest of the five, Prince Teppipit was the first to be defeated and was executed in 1768. Phimai had previously been an important town at the time of the Khom. The temple Prasat Hin Phimai, located in the center of the town, was one of the major Khom temples in ancient Thailand, connected with Angkor by an ancient Khom Highway, and oriented to face Angkor as its cardinal direction. The site is now protected as the Phimai Historical Park
