The DANGEROUS Precipice Trail Acadia National Park, Bar Harbor Maine
As we continue to Exit The Freeway we found ourselves LOVING all that Maine had to offer! We even stayed there an extra 2 days longer than we were planning! And if you are adventure seekers like us...this is the most dangerous trail in Acadia National Park! It offers absolutely breath taking views of Frenchman Bay and the Atlantic Ocean! Even though it is categorized as a Non-technical hike, it is actually considered by locals as more of a climb than a trail. It is a 1.5 mile climb up Champlain Mountain with an elevation gain of about 1072 feet. If you have a fear of heights, or experience vertigo, this trail is NOT for you! This trail is more of a free climb with no ropes or harnesses. You traverse the trail using metal rungs and ladders that are bolted into the rock face. During the summer, the trail can get very busy, however, when we visited it in late September, we only ran into one other couple and had the trail to ourselves. If hiking this trail, leave your poles behind...you won't need them.
Also, VERY IMPORTANT: This trail is usually closed between March 15 and August 15 for peregrine falcon nesting so if you plan on being there during this time...don't plan on visiting this trail.

Great spot to hike, I would say, it is almost climbing and not hiking, it's very steep. I would not want to hike that trail in the rain. Very fun and I recommend to anyone who is looking for a quite unique hike.

Waking up at 1:30AM to HIKE - Cadillac Mountain, Acadia National Park - Maine Coast EP. 3
Dan and I decided that instead of driving to the top of Cadillac Mountain, we were going to do it the right way and make the sunrise hike in the dark for the real experience! We woke up super early and made it to the top in time to be one of the first in the US to see the sun. We rounded out the day with the sunset at the Bass Lighthouse for the full sunrise to sunset experience. Hope you enjoy!

Precipice trail(Acadia Nat. Park) start to finish, 09-22-15
First time filming with GoPro(Hero 4 Silver, headmount). 1080, 60fps, med. wide angle. About 2 minutes from my fastest ascent in the other video. I did these just to show a raw, start to finish of the whole trail and climb to the Champlain summit marker. No editing, music, or fancy shots, etc. BTW, I have no clue what the constant thumping noise is in the background. It seems to happen sporadically with my GoPro when filming in 1080, 60fps.
Precipice Trail Hike - Acadia National Park - Bar Harbor, Maine 4k GoPro
It's been awhile since I got around to making a video so here it is. This was definitely one of the scarier possibly more dangerous hikes I've done so far but also one of the most fun! Visiting Acadia National Park was a first time for me and I wanted to see what these Iron Rung Hikes were all about and I was not disappointed. Despite my fear of heights it slowed my pace down quite a bit but nonetheless I was able to get through it without much of an issue. This is perfect for testing your rock scrambling/climbing abilities since there are some areas where it may be iffy for small children or people with movement issues.
I went during October during the fall foliage and even though it wasn't perfect the park/islands were all turning a nice rainbow color quite pleasing to the eye. Most, if not all, of Bar Harbor and the park gets shut down for the off-season so October was the perfect time to go and experience everything before that happens.
I hope the video isn't too bad as most of the hike was from my shoulder's point-of-view and was cut down/summarized into the more interesting portions of the hike. You can't really gauge the height in the video but take my word for it most people will get the vertigo feeling just by looking backwards while climbing or off the walking paths. If I come back this will able be a must-do when visiting Acadia National Park (or Bar Harbor, ME). My conquest of visiting all 50 States and US National Parks continues!

HIKE #1: Great Head Trail Loop
AllTrails description and review:
Jumping off from Sand Beach, a very popular spot for park lovers, the Great Head Trail Loop is a moderate excursion that totals 1.6 miles if you complete the entire thing. Great vantage points of the cliffs and ocean and plenty of opportunities to scamper around on the coastal rocks and get great photos of tidepools and much more.
It is ranked #8 of 145 trails in Acadia National Park by AllTrails.com . And we highly recommend it!

HIKE #2: Precipice Trail
AllTrails description and review:
If you want some heart-pounding thrills as you scale the side of a mountain and hold on for dear life, this is the trail for you. It is not for the faint of heart even though it is only 1.4 miles round trip, and it is not recommended for young children. There are signs warning of serious injury and death as a possibility on this trek so be sure you are ready to go all in on this one.
**Note: The trail is normally closed from Mar 15 to Aug 15 due to peregrine falcon nesting in the area, but we lucked out this year and they had just opened it back up the day before our hike in late July.
AllTrails ranks this trail as #3 out of 145 trails in Acadia, the highest ranking out of these three trails we got to hike. Not to be missed, folks!

HIKE #3: Ocean Path Trail
AllTrails description and review:
In all honesty, we just hiked a small portion of this trail, from Thunder Hole to Monument Cove. There was just so much to take in and enjoy along the coast line on that foggy evening that our two hours went far too fast and the light started fading. But what we did see was truly magical, as you can pick up from the video (which still can't do it justice, obviously).
The entire trail is a total of 3.9 miles out and back, but you can do any size section of it that suits you and I guarantee you will get everything you bargained for and more.
AllTrails.com ranks it as #7 out of 145 trails in Acadia National Park, so you know it's not too shabby. :)

We definitely hope these three trail recommendations help you to make the most of your visit to Acadia National Park. We didn't get to see even a fraction of what the park offers in the week that we spent in the area, but I have every intention of getting back to Acadia one of these days to continue my exploration.
As always, thank you so much for watching and for sharing this entire experience with us. We are extremely grateful and are so glad to have you along for the adventure.

Hiking the Precipice Trail - Acadia National Park
For vacation this year, Ani and I traveled to Acadia National Park on Mt. Desert Island in Maine. We were met by sister Bee and her husband Eric and, among other things, hiked the Precipice Trail.

Acadia National Park is an American national park located in the state of Maine, southwest of Bar Harbor. The park preserves about half of Mount Desert Island, many adjacent smaller islands, and part of the Schoodic Peninsula on the coast of Maine. Acadia was initially designated Sieur de Monts National Monument by proclamation of President Woodrow Wilson in 1916. Sieur de Monts was renamed and redesignated Lafayette National Park by Congress in 1919—the first national park in the United States east of the Mississippi River and the only one in the Northeastern United States. The park was renamed Acadia National Park in 1929. More than 3.5 million people visited the park in 2018.
Native Americans of the Algonquian nations have inhabited the area called Acadia for at least 12,000 years. They traded furs for European goods when French, English, and Dutch ships began arriving in the early 17th century. The Wabanaki Confederacy has held an annual Native American Festival in Bar Harbor since 1989. Samuel de Champlain named the island Isle des Monts Deserts (Island of Barren Mountains) in 1604. The island was granted to Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac by Louis XIV of France in 1688, then ceded to England in 1713. Summer visitors, nicknamed rusticators, arrived in 1855, followed by wealthy families, nicknamed cottagers as their large houses were quaintly called cottages. Charles Eliot is credited with the idea for the park. George B. Dorr, the Father of Acadia National Park, along with Eliot's father Charles W. Eliot, supported the idea through donations of land, and advocacy at the state and federal levels. John D. Rockefeller Jr. financed the construction of carriage roads from 1915 to 1940. A wildfire in 1947 burned much of the park and destroyed 237 houses, including 67 of the millionaires’ cottages.
The park includes mountains, an ocean coastline, coniferous and deciduous woodlands, lakes, ponds, and wetlands encompassing a total of 49,075 acres (76.7 sq mi; 198.6 km2) as of 2017. Key sites on Mount Desert Island include Cadillac Mountain—the tallest mountain on the eastern coastline and one of the first places in the United States where one can watch the sunrise—a rocky coast featuring Thunder Hole where waves crash loudly into a crevasse around high tides, a sandy swimming beach called Sand Beach, and numerous lakes and ponds. Jordan Pond features the glacially rounded North and South Bubbles (rôche moutonnées) at its northern end, while Echo Lake has the only freshwater swimming beach in the park. Somes Sound is a five-mile (8 km) long fjard formed during a glacial period that reshaped the entire island to its present form, including the U-shaped valleys containing the many ponds and lakes. The Bass Harbor Head Light is situated above a steep, rocky headland on the southwest coast—the only lighthouse on the island.
The park protects the habitats of 37 mammalian species including black bears, moose and white-tailed deer, seven reptilian species including milk snakes and snapping turtles, eleven amphibian species including wood frogs and spotted salamanders, 33 fish species including rainbow smelt and brook trout, and as many as 331 birds including various species of raptors, songbirds and waterfowl. In 1991, peregrine falcons had a successful nesting in Acadia for the first time since 1956. Falcon chicks are often banded to study migration, habitat use, and longevity. Some trails may be closed in spring and early summer to avoid disturbance to falcon nesting areas.
Recreational activities from spring through autumn include car and bus touring along the park's paved loop road; hiking, bicycling, and horseback riding on carriage roads (motor vehicles are prohibited); rock climbing; kayaking and canoeing on lakes and ponds; swimming at Sand Beach and Echo Lake; sea kayaking and guided boat tours on the ocean; and various ranger-led programs. Winter activities include cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and ice fishing. Two campgrounds are located on Mount Desert Island, another campground is on the Schoodic Peninsula, and five lean-to sites are on Isle au Haut. The main visitor center is at Hulls Cove, northwest of Bar Harbor.

Our Scariest Hike Yet! - Hiking the Beehive Loop Trail - Acadia National Park - Maine
The Beehive Loop Trail is a 1.3 mile moderate to difficult hike in Acadia National Park. It is a popular path, leaving from near the Sand Beach parking lot and climbing steeply up the side of Beehive mountain. Iron rungs and ladders help you navigate the rocks and cliff side. Once at the top, you have stunning views of Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park. The trail back is a more leisurely switchback trail down the other side. You can also choose to go up to the top and back down on this easier trail. Despite being a bit scary if you are afraid of heights, the trail is marked and popular. It ended up being our favorite hike in Acadia!
