Just days after Pearl Harbor attack, Japan launched a massive invasion in South East Asia and Kuching was one of its main target for control over Borneo. News of the fleet sailing to Kuching was received by America's allies, the Dutch and with their submarine division in Terakan, they set course to intercept. It was on Christmas eve of 1941 where it all happenned. Today, the wrecks lie at the bottom of South China Sea just off the coast of Kuching. Anglers and recreational scuba divers frequent these sites during the good season.
What was once man made now given back to mother nature.
The wrecks are home to many marine life such as groupers, snappers and sea turtles. The still intact structures are fun to manouver around and the size is an amazing sight. The best time of the day to dive is during change of tide when the current is very strong. One can see huge schools of batfish and snappers facing against the current waiting for food.
The obvious advantage for these wrecks are the depth. Katori Maru and Hiyoshi Maru have a bottom depth of only 21m. Any divers will know what this advantage will be on their bottom time. Sagiri is slightly deeper sitting at 26m. Bombs and canons can be found on this wreck. The details are still pretty much untouch and we hope it stay that way.
Katori Maru is broken into separate parts and spread over a wide area with only the bow section standing as the tallest bit.

The wrecks in Coron Bay provide the most amazing dive sites in the world. Getting an understanding of the details of the attack by US forces on Japanese supply ships, back on September 24th 1944, is a must.
Getting There
I took a Philippines Airline flight from Manila which cost about $300USD and took 40 minutes.

I stayed at the Divine Castle Travelers Inn for my four days in Coron - it was brilliant, Amazing views, great price and clean!

We met Patrick, the Dive Master at Neptune Dive Center - The big fella was from Texas and was as passionate and professional as you can be. Patrick knew all about the history of the sinking of the Japanese supply vessels and was great fun to be around.
Coron - Wreck Diving - The History
Here is a great site for more details of the amazing history of Coron - The wrecks in Coron Bay, and surrounding shores of Busuanga, are some of the finest dives sites in the Philippines today. I spent my Christmas in Kota Kinabalu in the Borneo side of Malaysia and stayed with a resort that I wanted to visit for a very long time. Gaya Island Resort. And I had a fantastic time with them.
Gaya Island Resort may not be the newest resort with all the highest technology amenities. What's unique about them is their unparalleled service level. They treat every single guest as a VIP. They make us feel important. Almost all of the staff able to greet us by our names during our stay. No matter what kind of request you have, the only word you will never hear is NO. This is how a 6star service should be.
We had a great time at Gaya Island Resort. Thank you so much for the warm hospitality from Catherine, the General manager and her excellent team, which made our holiday memorable. I highly recommend this resort to everyone.
