President Ronald Reagan pays a surprise visit to Pat Troy's Ireland's Own pub in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. The President, accompanied by journalist James Kilpatrick, stopped by for lunch and a pint of Harp on Saint Patrick's Day in 1988.

President Clinton has rounded off an exhausting day of engagements in the Irish capital in true Irish style -- with half a pint of Murphys.
Outside Cassidy's pub on the southern side of Dublin, admirers gathered, as the U-S President was ushered in amidst tight security.
Inside the old-fashioned wood and lacquered pub Clinton mingled easily with the 150 hand-picked guests.
The choice of pub was part of an attempt by the Clintons to trace his ancestral roots.
Unfortunately they did not manage to trace their distant relatives, but the name Cassidy relates to Clinton's mother's maiden name.
So a pub bearing her name was the closest that the president came to finding family in the Old Country.
The president was very warmly received by all those present.
He made every effort to meet and chat to most guests -- as well as sample the dark bitter stout beer.
VOXPOPS: (English)
ONE: He had a couple of pints up at the top end of the bar there and he met everybody. I shook hands with him three times.
TWO: The President walked around, there was no sense of security and it was absolutely brilliant informality.
THREE: He had a glass of stout at the bar and he said, I wished him the best on behalf of Cassidy's and welcome to Ireland and he said 'xxxx and he took a mouthful and shook my hand, that was basically it.

Most people also commented on the relaxed atmosphere and lack of security.
The president's visit had a big impact on the residents, he and his family received gifts from the locals.
Making his way through the crowds he got into his car again, this time swapping his Irish beer for a more American beverage - cola.

President Barack Obama MoneyGall Ireland meets his cousin
US President Barack Obama has been given a hero's welcome by thousands as he stepped foot in his ancestral home in Ireland.
Around 3,000 people lined the streets of Moneygall to welcome the American leader, whose great-great-great grandfather was raised there.
Falmouth Kearney, a shoemaker, was born in the village in Co Offaly in 1831 before emigrating to America in 1850.
During the brief visit, Mr Obama visited the Kearney ancestral home and met the current family who live there.
They were also due to visit Ollie Hayes' pub to meet extended family members including representatives of the Healy, Donovan and Benn families.

IRELAND: PRESIDENT CLINTON COMPLETES HIS VISIT OF DUBLIN

President Clinton received a rapturous reception from Dubliners when he visited the capital of the Irish Republic on the third stop of his historic peace mission.
After visiting London and the Northern Irish capital Belfast, the visit to Dublin was the last opportunity for Clinton to make a push for peace in Northern Ireland.
The U-S presidential couple was greeted by typical Irish weather as they touched down at Dublin's international airport.
Despite the damp, a formidable welcoming party was in place to greet Mr and Mrs Clinton for the last leg of their Irish peace tour.
Irish president Mary Robinson and her husband Nicholas headed the group around the red carpet, which included Prime Minister John Bruton and Foreign Minister Dick Spring with their wives.
The elaborate welcoming ceremony with full pageantry is a sign of the significance of the U-S presidential visit to Ireland.
Young and old alike greeted their American guests of honour with enthusiasm.
The presidential couple had a full schedule for their one-day visit.
A 40-vehicle cavalcade took the Clintons to their first port of call - the official Irish presidential residence at Phoenix Park.
Later the American President and First Lady Hillary received a rapturous welcome from scores of thousands of Dubliners gathered in the Irish capital's centre.
Waving Stars and Stripes and the Irish tricolour, young and old cheered themselves hoarse in a triumphant finale to the First Couple's peace mission to Ireland.

Tuesday night before I left the United States to come here, I received a happy word that the Taiseoch (pronounced tea-shook) and Prime Minister Major had opened a gateway to a just and lasting peace, a peace that will lift the lives of your neighbours in Northern Ireland. And their neighbours in the towns and counties that share the northern border. That was the greatest welcome that anyone could have asked for. I applaud the Taiseoch (Prime Minister) for his courage. But I know that the courage and the heart of the Irish people made it possible and I thank you for what you did.

Later at a press conference President Clinton angrily pounded his podium when asked what right the United States has to send troops to former Yugoslavia.

Every day for almost forty years there has been a citizen of Ireland in some distant country working for peacekeeping in places where the United States did not go and they did not ask what is the immediate interest of the people of Ireland in doing that. So I think that the United States has been very well served by countries that have been willing to stand up with us and stand up for good things, for right things that also affect our interest. And I believe we should do this now.
