New Ukrainian cabinet meets in Kiev, protesters in central square
Ukraine's new prime minister said that his country would remain united, despite an escalation in tensions in the strategic region of Crimea.
For Crimeans - we will guarantee safety and nobody will split Ukraine. We are Ukrainian, united in the fact that we have one united Ukraine. Despite the fact that we have religious, language and other differences, Arseniy Yatsenyuk said on Thursday.
His comments came after pro-Russian gunmen stormed government offices in Crimea, deepening the crisis for the new Ukrainian government even as it was being formed.
The moves pose an immediate challenge to Ukraine's new authorities as they seek to set up an interim government for the country, whose population is divided in loyalties between Russia and the West.
Yatsenyuk said the country's future lies in the European Union but with friendly relations with Russia.
Moscow, meanwhile, has launched a massive military exercise involving 150-thousand troops and put fighter jets on patrol along the border.
And fugitive Ukrainian president, Viktor Yanukovych, who was driven out of Kiev by a three-month protest movement, was reportedly staying in a Kremlin sanatorium just outside Moscow.
In Kiev, lawmakers chose Yatsenyuk as the new prime minister.
He will face the hugely complicated task of restoring stability in a country that is not only deeply divided politically but on the verge of financial collapse.
The 39-year-old served as economy minister, foreign minister and parliamentary speaker before Yanukovych took office in 2010, and is widely viewed as a technocratic reformer who enjoys the support of the US.
Shortly before the lawmakers chose him as the leader of the new Cabinet, Yatsenyuk said Ukraine doesn't want a fight with Russia, but insisted the country wouldn't accept the secession of the southern Crimea region.
The US has urged Russia not to take any action on Ukraine that might boost tensions or be subject to misinterpretation.
Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel said the United States strongly supports Ukraine's territorial integrity and is closely monitoring the Russian manoeuvres.
If the questions regarding Crimea are not regulated, we will use all other mechanisms which have been dictated by the Budapest Memorandum, which dictates a two-way conversation with America, Britain and Russia, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Dechytsya said.
In a statement, the local government said Crimean Prime Minister Anatoly Mogilyev had tried to negotiate with the gunmen but was told they were not authorised to negotiate and present demands.
Ukraine's acting interior minister, Arsen Avakov, said on his Facebook page that police were sealing off the area.
One of the new government's first tasks will be to seek rescue loans from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.
The finance ministry has pegged the country's needs at 35 billion US dollars for this year and next to pay salaries and debts and cover the large budget deficit.
It will also have to deal with the angry street protesters who set up camp on Kiev's Independence Square during the uprising against Yanukovych.
Many of them worry that the new government will not address their grievances, including the endemic corruption in Ukraine's political system.
Hundreds of protesters gathered outside Parliament on Thursday, placing car tyres and unlit Molotov cocktails at the entrance as if to remind lawmakers that the street revolt could easily re-ignite.

Ukraine: Poroshenko casts his ballot in presidential election
Subscribe to our channel! rupt.ly/subscribe
Incumbent Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko cast his vote in the presidential election at a polling station in Kiev on Sunday.
According to the opinion polls, Poroshenko is one of the three most popular candidates alongside with former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko and actor-turned-politician Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
“I am convinced that elections were well organized, the citizens' choice will be expressed, this is an absolutely necessary condition for us to move forward - forward towards Ukraine’s return into the family of European nations, towards our membership in European Union and NATO,” Poroshenko said after casting his ballot.
The polling stations across the country are open from 08:00 local time until 20:00. More than 35 million people are eligible to vote in Ukraine's seventh presidential elections.
If no one secures an absolute majority of the votes, the run-off election between the top two candidates will be held on April 21.

Trudeau lays flowers at memorial of Maidan victims
(11 Jul 2016) Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Monday laid flowers at the Maidan memorial honouring activists killed in the 2014 Ukraine uprising.
The Canadian Prime Minister was accompanied by Ukrainian Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman.
Ukraine and Canada also signed a free trade agreement on Monday.
Canada is home to a sizeable Ukrainian minority and has been a key backer for Ukraine during the two-year separatist war in the east.
Trudeau received a rapturous welcome in Kiev with Ukraine rolling out a red carpet for Trudeau at the welcome ceremony outside Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko's office in central Kiev.
Trudeau reiterated Canada's support for the Kiev government's fight against Russia-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine but stopped short of pledging weapons supplies that Ukraine is anxious to get from the West.

UKRAINE: US DEFENCE SECRETARY WILLIAM PERRY VISIT
Eng/Russian/Natsot
U-S Defence Secretary William Perry arrived in Ukraine's capital Kiev today (Friday) for the beginning of his tour of the former Soviet Union.
He met with both the Ukrainian's president and defence minister for talks on American aid to help them disarm their nuclear arsenal.
U-S Defence Secretary William Perry arrived at Kiev's Borispol Airport today (Friday) to a guard of honour and a welcome from the Ukraine's Deputy Defence Minister Anatoly Lapatak.
This heralded the start of a day of talks with Ukraine's top brass. The men were discussing American aid to help Ukraine disarm its nuclear arsenal, a holdover from former Soviet rule.
Under a 1994 trilateral agreement between Russia, the Ukraine and the U.S., a timetable was set for removing warheads from ICBMs ( inter continental ballistic missile) in the Ukraine and sending them to Russian territory.
The Ukraine is on schedule to complete the transfer by the end of 1996 - an achievement Perry said is remarkable.
After the formalities, Perry's first task was a meeting with Defence Minister Valery Shmarov and members of the Ukrainian High Command for further discussion on nuclear disarmament.
Later in the day he met Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma for talks covering a range of issues including Crimea and the details of a joint military exercise planned for May.
The exercise is already being rehearsed under the watchful eye of the U-S military attache Stefan Kachmar.
Perry will also visit a missile launch site and a military garrison during his week long visit.

STORYLINE
Supporters of jailed former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko demonstrated outside her prison on Friday as journalists were taken on a tour inside the facility.
Tymoshenko, the country's top opposition leader, is serving a seven-year jail sentence on charges of abuse of office after a verdict condemned by the West as politically motivated.
Journalists were not allowed to meet with Tymoshenko during the open doors day at the prison.
Outside the Kachanivska facility, lawmaker Serhiy Shevchuk said Tymoshenko, who suffers from a back condition, should have received treatment months ago.
She has been ill for a long time. They should have treated her many months ago and not as they did it here, in a jail in Kiev, he said.
A prison doctor told reporters on Friday that Tymoshenko needed to consent to medical treatment at the prison before it could be administered.
A Penitentiary Service spokesman said on Thursday that Tymoshenko has been offered medication, massages and other procedures for her condition to be administered inside the prison but she refused.
Tymoshenko has a spinal hernia and suffers from constant pain.
German doctors have concluded that she urgently needs complex treatment that cannot be conducted on the premises of the prison in eastern Ukraine.
A Ukrainian prison official said on Thursday that Tymoshenko hasn't been allowed to receive treatment in a specialised clinic recommended by German doctors.
Journalists meanwhile were able to talk to other inmates at the women's prison.
One woman said she was aware that Tymoshenko is serving her term at the Kachanivska facility but hadn't seen or spoken to her.
We have a lot of work to do and our own tasks so we don't have time to talk about her (Yulia Tymoshenko), said prisoner Olga Usanova.
We didn't see her. We never speak to her, Usanova added.

STORYLINE
Ukraine's former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko has gone on trial in a case raising concerns in the West over the government's commitment to democracy and the rule of law.
Tymoshenko, now a top opposition leader, has been charged with abuse of office in signing a deal with Moscow to buy Russian natural gas at prices investigators said were too high.
She denies the charges, and describes them as a political plot by her rival, President Viktor Yanukovych, to keep her out of upcoming parliamentary and presidential elections.
The United States and the European Union have condemned the probe against Tymoshenko and a number of her top allies as selective prosecution of political opponents.
Tymoshenko refused to stand up to answer the judge's questions and then demanded that he should be dismissed.
You are fully integrated into a system of political repressions directed by authorities Tymoshenko said.
In response, prosecutor Tatyana Frolova said there were no grounds for changing the judge.
Tymoshenko was the central figure in the 2004 mass protests dubbed Orange Revolution that threw out Yanukovych's fraud-tainted election victory.

Current Political Climate in Ukraine
A whopping 71 percent of Ukrainians are satisfied with President Volodymyr Zelensky’s policies, as shown by survey results published by the Rating Group pollster on Sept. 21. This is a level which no other president has ever enjoyed. Public confidence in the success of reforms is at its highest since 2015. With the election of Volodymyr Zelensky as president, people began to ratchet up their expectations for political and economic reforms, specifically those propelled by Western-oriented initiatives.
