Strolling to the Prinsenhof in Ghent - Belgium 4K Travel Channel
After our ride on the Wandelbus, we make our way on foot to the Prinsenhof.
The Prinzenhof was built in the 14th century as a home for an Italian financier and politician. Later it was transformed into the residence of the Counts of Flanders. At that time, the core of the complex was called Hof ten Walle.
Maximilian the Habsburg celebrated his wedding here with Mary of Burgundy in 1477. But already in 1482, Maria died in a hunting accident. Maximilian was bound in many wars and could not enforce his guardianship for his son Philipp against the Dutch estates and France. It was not until 1493 that he succeeded. De facto Philipp and his sister Margarete were held hostage in Ghent. On February 24, 1500, the son of Philip, the grandson of Emperor Maximilian I, the future Emperor Charles V, was born here.
The relationship between the Habsburgs and the inhabitants of Flanders has always been ambivalent. Maximilian I was arrested during a visit to Bruges in 1488 and was only released after months when his father marched up with troops. In a countermove, one executed several ringleaders in Bruges.
Later, the city of Gent refused to support Charles V in the war against France, although Bruges built a sophisticated fireplace in honor of Charles V in 1530 to liberate it from French rule.
Charles V returned the favor with the execution of 18 ringleaders. Seventeen were executed by beheading in 1540, and one burned in 1545. This incident became commonly known because Ghent lost many of its most important rights. Many citizens had to kneel with a rope around their neck in front of the emperor.
A stroll to the Prinsenhof
First, we follow the route of the Wandelbuses in reverse direction and reach the Vrijdagmarkt, the Friday market. The traders are already busy dismantling their stands. Although it is called Friday Market, we made the video on a Saturday!
In the middle of the square is the statue of Jacob van Artevelde, built-in 1832. He was the leader of a Ghent uprising against Count Ludwig I of Flanders to undo the boycott of English wool imports. During the riots of 1345, one murdered him.

Guided Boat Trip in Ghent - Belgium 4K Travel Channel
Our stay in Belgium is coming to an end. To conclude our journey, we take a boat tour of the city. The tourist boats for the round trips by the canals leave in the center. They start at Graslei and Korenlei, the quays at the right and left bank of the Leie. We start our boat tour at the Graslei. The friendly and competent boat guide quickly provides us with some umbrellas, as it is not sure if it will stay dry.
First, we head south to Jakobijnenstraat.
There we make a turn and drive back past the drop-off point, along the Lieve to Prinsenhof and Rabot, the lock at Begijnhoflaan. After that, it goes back to the Graslei again.
Our good-humored boat captain tells all kinds of special features about the architecture of the buildings, like at Graslei. Next to an old granary, we see a small house with a blue balcony, the former customs building.
Next to it is the building of the guild of free skippers. They were called free skippers because they were born in Ghent and therefore did not have to pay taxes. Above the entrance of the building is a portrait of Santa Maria, the ship of Christopher Columbus.
In the further course, the building complex of the old post office appears. On the occasion of the World Exhibition in 1913, one converted the building into the shopping gallery De Post and the luxury hotel 1898 ThePost. A copy of Big Ben in London towers the building complex.
On the bridge pillars of the Sint-Michelsbrug, we see on each site a sculptured relief, one of a woman and one of a man, symbolizing the rivers Leie and Lieve. The confluence of the rivers in the city and the two reliefs represent a love story.
The Sint-Michielskerk and the university are on the right after the bridge.
On the way back at Korenlei, our female boat driver draws our attention to a building with two golden swans on the facade. The swans were the sign that there was a brothel in the building.
Again, we pass Gravensteen Castle and the Prinsenhof. A day before, we already walked along this part of the boat tour. You find the description of this section in our article Walk to the Prinsenhof in Ghent.

#VisitGent: Prinsenhoffeesten
In the 14th century, Lodewijk van Male swapped the Castle of the Counts, which had grown uncomfortable, for a town house in this neighbourhood. It was here that Charles V was born in 1500. The Prinsenhof, as it was called then (and still is), was around 2 hectares in size and fully walled.
Charles V represents more than merely a footnote in the history of Ghent. He humiliated the rebellious inhabitants of Ghent by making them kneel in front of him barefoot and with a noose. Today, they are proud of their nickname, “stroppendragers” or “noose bearers”, but back then that certainly wasn’t the case.
Of the gigantic, walled complex with more than 300 rooms, a zoo and a pleasure garden (!), only the Dark Gate remains today. However, this does not mean you should bypass the area: it is one of the city’s many hidden gems.
In the first week of September the Prinsenhof Festivities take place here, including the largest flea market in Ghent.

From Bruges to Ghent - Belgium 4K Travel Channel
Our stay in Bruges is coming to an end, but we are still staying in Belgium. Next stop is the city of Gent, about 40 km away. Originally, Ghent was a Celtic settlement. In the Middle Ages, it became one of the largest and most important cities in Europe through the cloth and grain trade. The town changed to one of the first industrialized towns on the continent at the end of the 18th century. Emperor Charles V, the grandson of Emperor Maximilian I, was born here. Charles V was the most powerful emperor of the Middle Ages in Europe. His overseas colonies reached to Central and South America, as well as Indonesia.
Ghent had several epithets, such as the proud city, flower city, or Manhattan of the Middle Ages.
The drive from Bruges to Ghent
From the Bryghia Hotel, we first drive in the opposite direction, north through Sint Jorisstraat and Viamingdam. Afterward, we go in an arc along the Gulden-Vlieslaan around the old town center. We pass another city gate, the Ezelpoort.
Past the Concertgebouw, we reach the express road, a feeder road to the motorway. The trip to Gent takes about half an hour.
We leave the highway at the junction Zwijnaarde in northern direction. Via the Hubert-Frere-Orbanlaan we arrive directly in the center of Ghent.
Our accommodation for the next days, the B&B Chambreplus, is diagonally opposite the Stadthuis in the pedestrian zone.

Graffiti and City Tour with the Wandelbus in Ghent - Belgium 4K Travel Channel
Near our accommodation, the Werregarenstraat branches off from Hoogpoort to the north. The Werregarenstraat is a narrow alley surrounded by high stone walls. Only in the middle, there is a fence, which opens the view to the Hof van Rijhove, a listed house with a mostly original garden from the 15th century.
On the walls of the Werregarenstraat, graffiti painting is allowed. An ideal training ground for young artists.
Due to the changeable weather, we are still undecided about what we should do. Therefore we decide to buy some small things first.
Opposite the St Nicholas' Church, the Metselaarshuis with the figures on the stepped gable catches our eye. It is the guild house of the stonemasons from the 16th century.
Right around the corner is the Veldstraat, a shopping street with department stores. Yet, we are surprised to find only a few people in the pedestrian zone on a Saturday at quarter to ten.
After we have finished running your errands, we walk through various alleys to St. Bavo's Cathedral to visit the Ghent altar. It is in a shielded side chapel. Since an extra entrance fee is required and filming is not allowed, we do not visit it. Only a small view through a crevice we can throw at it.
Frustrated by the weather and the film ban, we decide to get a better overview of the city. We make a round tour with the Wandelbus. The Wandelbus drives on a fixed route with stops every few hundred meters. The bus stops only when someone wants to get on or off the bus. Very exemplary is its electric drive and that the Wandelbus can be used free of charge. As a result, this reduces the individual car traffic of tourists and locals.
The journey first leads south to the Kouter, a large square. On Sundays, it is the venue of the flower market.
Afterward, we drive north, past castle Grafenstein near the Prinzenhof, and further to the Vrijdagmarkt.
We notice that especially in the northwest of Gravensteen Castle there are a lot of restaurants and bars and this area is very touristic.

Beklimming Sint Baafstoren Gent 2019
