Gems of Itasca Series - The Bovey Edition (2017 Regional EMMY® nominated)
**This episode was nominated for an Emmy® (Regional - Upper Midwest Chapter) September 2017.
Bovey, Picture Grace, Prohibition, Suffrage, Speakeasy, Jazz era.
THE BOVEY EDITION: Bovey, Minnesota was a historical jewel in the Iron Range and is known for its rich mining history beginning in the early 1900's and as the home of world-famous photograph & Minnesota's official State picture Grace. We profile the history of the Grace photo that was taken by Eric Enstrom in his Bovey studio back in 1918. Bovey was bustling in the early 1900's. A major highway led through the town's center and past the Renaissance Revival designed Bovey Village Hall which still stands today and is listed on the National Register of Historical Places. Opposite Bovey Village Hall was the Bovey Mercantile store, the biggest hardware store in Northern Minnesota at that time. Now known as Annabella's Antiques, the store was discovered to have a couple of underground tunnels which have spawned legends over the decades as to what the tunnels' purposes were. To a backdrop of early 30's speakeasy/jazz styled re-enactments, we interview residents who lived in the area through the Depression era who have a first hand account of the lively happenings in Bovey and surrounding areas.

Prohibiting Local Ordinances From Banning Plastic Bags
A proposal that would prohibit local governments from taxing or banning merchants from distributing plastic bags came before the Senate Environment and Natural Resources Finance Committee Tuesday, March 7. Sponsored by Senator Bill Ingebrigtsen, R-Alexandria, the bill establishes a plastic bag recycling grant program to help local governments establish recycling efforts.
Steve Rush of Holiday Stores spoke in support of the measure. Along with the expense of expensive employment mandates, such as paid sick leave, the accumulative effect of these regulations make it more difficult for us to operate a successful business.
Speaking against the measure, Megan Kuhl-Stennes of Eureka Recycling said, Collectively we need to stop using these products that litter our streets and waterways and expose us to toxins and carcinogens that never should have been used in the first place.
Senator Ingebrigtsen said efforts to keep the plastic bags out of the environment is up to the individual, and a city-by-city ban is not the way to proceed.

Stories from Prohibition don't just come from big cities like Chicago and New York. They can be found all over, from Minneapolis/St. Paul to our own backyard in southwest Minnesota.
In coordination with Ken Burns' Prohibition, Pioneer Public Television is proud to present a local documentary on Prohibition. Volstead Fever: Prohibition in Minnesota will feature the Congressional author of Prohibition, Representative Andrew Volstead of Granite Falls, the impact Prohibition had on the historic Schell's Brewery of New Ulm and Ghent, the first town in Minnesota to serve alcohol when Prohibition ended.
In this documentary about the Prohibition-era of southwest Minnesota, you'll get a glimpse at early 20th century history, visiting the home of Andrew Volstead and learning dark secrets about Granite Falls' supper club, Bootleggers. You'll also hear from local brewers who are shaping the landscape of locally produced beers and find out how Schell's was able to survive Prohibition for its 13-year duration.
Weeding out marijuana
In a first step toward engineering a drug-free Cannabis plant for hemp fiber and oil, University of Minnesota researchers have identified genes producing tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the psychoactive substance in marijuana. Studying the genes could also lead to new and better drugs for pain, nausea and other conditions. The lead author is David Marks, a professor of plant biology in the College of Biological Sciences.
The study revealed that the genes are active in tiny hairs covering the flowers of Cannabis plants. In marijuana, the hairs accumulate high amounts of THC, whereas in hemp the hairs have little. Hemp and marijuana are difficult to distinguish apart from differences in THC.
