Minnesota's Civil War Showcase III
This final episode in the 3-part series explores role of Minnesota farmers (including Oliver Kelley), the return of soldier to Fort Snelling in 1865, the origins of the annual Juneteenth commemoration and a recap of state activities throughout the Civil War sesquicentennial (2011-2015).
Free online course, Missouri’s Civil War, looks at a state divided
Though many people visualize Virginia or Georgia when they think of famous Civil War battles, Dr. Jeremy Neely, history instructor at Missouri State University, wants to shed light on the significance of Missouri during the last war on American soil.
His new Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), Missouri’s Civil War, begins Oct. 19. Neely will address military, political and social history, and focus on Missouri due to the number of engagements that took place within the state. Missouri is a particularly interesting study, noted Neely, because of the division in the state.
Lecture 2: Stuggle for the West (Civil War MOOC)
In this lecture, Dr. Neely examines Missouri's growth and how the Kansas-Nebraska Act reignited sectional tensions and sharpened the national focus upon the fate of the West.

Brandon Peeters - What Fort Snelling Means to Me
To commemorate the bicentennial of Historic Fort Snelling in 2020, the Minnesota Historical Society is embarking on a major initiative to reintroduce this dramatic area to Minnesotans and history lovers worldwide. The site’s many stories — stories of American history told nowhere else — will be experienced in preserved historic buildings amid restored natural beauty. For Brandon Peeters, the fort allows him to walk in the footsteps of his great-great-great-grandfather.
Lake Itasca Wilderness Drive
Took a trip up to Lake Itasca in Northern Minnesota for a few days - its a great place and is the source of the Mississippi River!
Around the edge of the lake and encompassing a few others is a Wilderness Drive, a mostly one-way road which winds through old Red, White and Jack Pine stands and has stops at various interesting points.
Notable areas of interest are:
Aiton Fire Tower,
Preachers Grove,
Peace Pipe Vista,
The Mississippi Headwaters
Bison Kill Site
The footage was shot using my GoPro Hero3+ Silver and a Zhiyun Z-1 Evolution to stabilize the camera.

Federal Signal Eclipse 8 Noon Blast Galesville, WI 5-18-19
I finally got up to see the new Eclipse 8 in Galesville, Wisconsin. The STH-10 on top of the Police Department is non-operational, which is sad. I don't know when the Eclipse 8 went up, but it had to be not long ago. RIP Galesville STH-10. :( Another classic Federal Signal siren not functioning.
