Prospect Overlook at Berkeley Springs, West Virginia (aka Panorama Overlook)
Just off Route 9, west of the historic town of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia, is the Prospect Overlook, known locally as the Panorama Overlook because of the (now closed) Panorama Restaurant nearby. The overlook is located on the north end of Cacapon Mountain and offers nice views north and west. West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania are all visible. The vista also overlooks the Potomac River and the small town of Great Cacapon. Thanks for watching!

Berkeley Springs Pair of Park Treasures
Berkeley Springs is overflowing with state park treasures — and each of the pair is distinctive.
Berkeley Springs State Park in the heart of town has been attracting visitors seeking healing to come “take the waters” for nearly 300 years. With a spa, historic Roman Baths, swimming pool, museum and spring pools open 24/7, there is no other park like it. The surrounding historic town is a bonus!
Cacapon State Park is a 6000 acre wilderness wonderland with an exquisite 18-hole golf course, sand beach lake, miles of mountain hiking trails, cabins, a lodge and more. When visitors seek outdoor adventure in a mountain environment, Cacapon is the place they go — and it’s just 10 miles south of town.

Berkeley Springs West Virginia B&O Station (Sept 2 2012)
Another (unfortunately) disused B&O RR station!
Once upon a time, Berkeley Springs (formerly Bath) was a (sort-of) major railroad spot in northern West Virginia, complete with sizable RR yard. The size of the former yard attests to all the activity that once went on in this small town! All that, despite being located on a dead-end spur!
The spur reached here after branching off the Baltimore &Ohio RR (now CSX) main line from Hancock to the north (the B&O/CSX line is actually on the WV side of the Potomac while Hancock proper is on the MD side). The spur still serves a quarry a few miles south of Hancock but no longer runs to Berkeley Springs.
My understanding with the passenger service is that westbound B&O mainline trains (i.e. Capital Limited etc) would back down the line to Berkeley Springs then head out, while eastbound trains would head down the branch then back out.
This station would make a great visitors' center for Berkeley Springs and the general area, including Cacapon Overlook (Prospect Peak) a few miles to the west. But, unfortunately, it's going the way of others on the original B&O system. The interior is (almost) in shambles. Still time to save it!!
Shot during rain-noisy camera zoom and all.
Ziler Loop Hike at Cacapon State Park, West Virginia
Late one evening in early May, I made my second visit to Cacapon State Park, located on Cacapon Mountain south of Berkeley Springs in Morgan County, West Virginia. I parked at the upper reservoir and used a combination of North Fork Road, a water tower access road, the Central Trail, the Ziler Loop Trail, and the Ziler Trail, to make a nice loop hike on the east facing slope of the mountain. There are a lot of nice rock formations, a beautiful forest, and some good vistas on the hike. Thanks for watching!

Prospect Peak Route 9 west WV on Goldwing
Day Odyssey Series: Wilds Of West Virginia (with March winds!)
The next in our Baltimore-based daytrip series takes us into the mountains of West Virginia...but not till after we deal with gale-force winds a couple days before! Lost our power for several hours, but it comes back on as I do my follow-up later at night!
OK-on with the odyssey...
Again beginning on Interstate 70 to give us a jump on things, we make a brief stop in Williamsport MD for a quick look at the C&O Canal's Cushwa Basin, and the restoration of the Conococheague Aqueduct.
Then on to (or into) West Virginia! Via US 11 and WV 901 we head for wicked WV 9 (mountain crossings, curves and all-but some great views) and take that west to the towns of Berkeley Springs, Keyser and Piedmont WV, where we check out the former B&O RR stations. En route, we stop at Prospect Peak for a great view into the Potomac River valley! A few all-new locations too, and the usual history!
We make our way back on MD 36, I-68, then back on 70.
Done on March 4 2018.
P.S. Still regulated to public PCs, so bear with me if I don't respond to your comments right away-but I will ASAP!
