A Cape Cod Province Lands Bike Ride
Take a bike ride with me on the Province Lands trail starting from the Cape Cod National Seashore visitor center riding to Herring Cove Beach and then to Race Point Beach. The trail is a 5.45 mile loop through forest and dunes with many hills. The path spur to Herring Cove is 1.1 mile and Race Point is 0.5 off the main path and well worth the journeys.
Three Bicycle Trails ~ Cape Cod Massachusetts
We had a blast riding our Mountain Bikes on our vacation down at Cape Cod.
We explored three different Bike Trails.
September 20, 2016 we rode our bikes on the Old Colony Rail Trail and the CCRT - Cape Cod Rail Trail starting in Harwich down to Nickerson State Park in Brewster. It poured on us. We do not have rain gear for our bikes. We made the best of it. The trails were paved in a wooded area. We saw Cranberry bogs and ponds..it was a great ride. Nickerson State Park had some huge hills to ride up and down. It was difficult for me,, I had to walk my bike up a few hills. This was a 21 mile bike ride,, the longest one I have done since getting my Mountain Bike Mid June 2016.
September 22, 2016 we rode our bikes on the Province Lands Bicycle Trail. We parked at the Provincetown Visitor Center. I absolutely loved this Bike Trail. You ride on a paved trail through the Sand Dunes.. WOW what a fun and beautiful bike ride. We rode out to Herring Cove, Race Point and Bennett Pond. It is marked as a Challenging Bike Path,, and it was. We rode 12 miles.
September 23, 2016 we rode our bikes on the Head of the Meadows Bicycle Trail. The trails are paved but very bumpy. It was a pretty ride but short.. only 2 miles out and 2 miles back.
We had a great time biking on Cape Cod.

Cape Cod Bike Trails
One of the most enjoyable ways to see and experience the beauty of Cape Cod is on two wheels – on a bike! Cape Cod offers over 60 miles of breath-taking scenic trails for riders of all levels. Go places roads just won’t take you. Get an up-close look at nature in its purest form. All while traveling at your own pace with family, friends and fellow bike riders.
Cape Cod Canal Bike Paths
Before you even cross the bridge, there’s the Cape Cod Canal Bikeway offering over 7 miles of trails on BOTH sides of the mighty Cape Cod Canal. It’s a beautiful setting offering awe-inspiring views of the towering Bourne and Sagamore bridges and the endless boat traffic on the canal. Complete your ride in Sagamore and you’ll be steps away from Scusset Beach and the mouth of Cape Cod Bay at Scusset Harbor.
Shining Sea Bikeway
Another great option is Falmouth’s Shining Sea Bikeway. The northern end of this 11 mile bikeway is in North Falmouth. Hug the entire coast past Sippewissett Marsh, through nearby Falmouth Center, past ponds, Vineyard Sound beaches and Little Harbor. The southern end of the bikeway takes you right to the Steamship Authority parking lot in the charming village of Woods Hole.
Cape Cod Rail Trail
The longest ride on the Cape is the Cape Cod Trail Rail. This 22 mile trail follows the former railroad right-of-way through the towns of Dennis, Harwich, Brewster, Orleans, Eastham and Wellfleet. This popular trail passes many local points of interest and several lakes offering many opportunities to get off the trail and visit a beach, picnic or grab an ice cream cone.
Cape Cod Nickerson State Park Bike Path
While in the Brewster area, you might want to head over to Nickerson State Park for a hilly, yet very scenic network of dedicated bike trails. This enjoyable 8 mile ride takes you through beautiful pine and fir tree forests and around ponds, lakes and bogs. It’s a great opportunity to see a unique coastal woodlands ecosystem.
Nauset Marsh Trail
Equally impressive is the Nauset Marsh Trail located in the National Seashore. This 3 mile round trip begins at Salt Pond Visitor Center in Eastham. Along the way you’ll enjoy large cedar, pine and oak forests and see panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean on your way to Coast Guard Beach.
Province Lands Trail
And last, but not least is the 7-1/4 mile Province Lands Trail. This hilly paved loop starts at the Province Lands visitor center in Provincetown and traverses much of the Province Lands’ 4,000 acres. Enjoy breathtaking marshland, endless dunes and water views along the way. A 2 mile trail extension will take you to Herring Beach, Race Point Beach and Bennet Pond.
So, the next time you set out to explore Cape Cod…consider doing it on two wheels. You might just find it to be “a most enjoyable” way to travel.

Riding Fat Bikes at the Beach in Provincetown MA
Province Lands Bike Trail in Provincetown Massachusetts is one of the best places to ride a paved bike trail through nature that we’ve ever encountered. We’ve ridden it several times over the years on road bikes, but this time we set out to ride it on fat bikes. This trail is around 8 miles of rolling up and downs with twists and turns. All the flow you could hope for. The Province Lands Park Ranger Office sits at the top of one of the loops with a look out point over the dunes. These trails can get a little crowded with families and other obstacles like sand in blind corners, so you should ride with extreme caution. There are many accidents here every year. We took the fat bikes out on a few openings that looked like rideable trails, but they really aren’t. There are two trailheads that kinda look like they might be rideable but the one at beech forest is more for hiking, and the other at the pond is for horses. With a few other MTB options in the area like Wellfleet ponds, Nickerson State Park, Pine Hills, and of course West Barnstable – which was amazeballs for a beach trail – we’d suggest just sticking to the pavement out on the Province Lands Bike Path. If you need a bike rental – the best shop close to that trail is right next to the coastal acres campground and it’s called Gale Force Bikes. also have some healthy foods to take with you and gear if you forgot anything. Rent a bike for your stay and you won’t have to be bothered with trying to find parking all week. Everything is bikeable.

Where will you find the best bike paths in Mass?
Not in Worcester. Over the past year or so I've seen more and more bikes painted on the road. As an experienced motorest, pedestrian, and cyclest I can say with authority that pianting a bike in the middle of the road does not a bike path make.

Khmer Americans on bike trail in Lowell, MA.
In late Spring 2019, we spent a few afternoon hours riding along the Bruce Freeman Rail trail which spans approximately 11.7 miles or 18.8 km at present (25 miles or 40 km when completed), across about 8 cities from Lowell to Framingham in the state of Ma, USA. The trail is still under construction; we made only about 1/2 of the way, enjoying spectacular scenery the nature offers on both sides of the path - tall trees, shrubs, lakes, streams, recreation areas, nice breeze in a warm 87 F weather, serenity, etc... A very good experience.
