Perspective on the Provincetown Art Colony
by Deborah Forman, includes the movie Art in its Soul, produced by the Cape Cod Museum of Art.
Deborah Forman: Perspectives on the Provincetown Art Colony
Join author Deborah Forman for a talk about the evolution of
her book, Perspectives on the Provincetown Art Colony,
(Schiffer Books, 2011).
Describing the creation of the book, Forman says, “This was a
journey of discovery as I sought out the artists and writers who
could tell me about their love of art, their fascination with Provincetown, and how the town influenced their work. Woven together, the stories of the artists and writers bring into view
a picture of the artist colony from 1899, when
Charles Hawthorne opened his school, through the
early days of the 20th century when the
Provincetown Art Association was established and
modernists and traditionalists were vying for favor.”
In this groundbreaking book, first-hand accounts of
those Forman interviewed develop the history
further as they explore the impact of Hans Hofmann
and the Abstract Expressionists, the glory days of the
1950s and early ‘60s, and the efforts to revitalize the artist
colony as the 20th century drew to a close.
Anecdotes of her encounters with the artists and writers will add spice to her presentation, and examples of their work will be shown.
Northeast by Southwest: A Gallery Talk with Myrna Harrison
Presented in conjunction with the Artist’s
exhibition at PAAM, May 18-July 15, 2012
Join the painter Myrna Harrison for a gallery talk
in conjunction with her exhibition Northeast by
Southwest: The Lively Landscapes of Myrna
Harrison curated by James Burns, Robert Henry and
Selina Trieff. The talk will be facilitated by the artist
and Robert Henry.
A former student of Hans Hofmann, Harrison’s influ-ences range from early-mid 20th century abstract expressionist painters such as
Hofmann, Willem de Kooning, and Franz Kline; to California painters David Park and Richard Diebenkorn; to Japanese prints and Chinese landscape painting. Of her work and process Harrison states, “Oceans and deserts fascinate me. They share spacial openness, an unending skyline, subtle changes in form and color as the sun moves across the sky, and a demand that we
adapt to them. They will not adapt to us. Both have an intense vibrant presence–which is not surprising: deserts began life as oceans millions of years ago. I want my work to express that vibrant intensity.”
Born in Hollywood, CA in 1932, Harrison studied fine
art in NYC with Morris Davidson, Jack Tworkov, and at
the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts (1953-57). She is
represented in the collections of the Rose Museum,
Brandeis University, PAAM, and Cape Cod Museum of
Art and in private collections throughout the US, Europe,
and Asia. For the past 30 years she has lived in Arizona
where she has been president of 3 community
colleges. Her gallery representation includes James
Ratliff Gallery (Sedona, AZ); Beauregard Fine Art
(Rumsfield, NJ); and Acme Fine Art (Boston, MA).

Rick Fleury: Inspired by Cape Cod
Artist Rick Fleury shares his contemporary landscape paintings of Cape Cod in an inspiring video on the ways he strives to share the peace and abundant beauty found in the natural world so that it may be preserved and valued for all time.
Fleury is known internationally for his minimalist style of capturing the purity of the landscape on canvas and copper.
The video features music by Cape Cod jazz musician and composer Dan Sullivan.
Born and raised in Massachusetts, Rick Fleury is devoting his professional life to painting coastal landscapes of New England -- leaving behind successful careers as a journalist and a New York executive officer and creative director in advertising and public relations.
His minimalist style of landscape, known and collected internationally, is widely associated with Cape Cod and New England. He is a member of the Copley Society, the oldest non-profit art association in the United States. In a rare, if not exclusive situation, rather than go through the arduous and competitive process of applying for membership in this prestigious organization, the Copley Society sought Rick out in his studio and asked him to become a member in 2006.
Rick has been honored with solo exhibitions at the Cape Cod Museum of Art and through the Copley Society.
His work is in the permanent collections of the Cape Cod Museum of Art, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, the Cahoon Museum of American Art, Dana-Farber/Brigham and Women's, Bessemer Trust Company, Cape Cod Hospital/Cape Cod Healthcare, and other distinguished corporate and private collections.
He has taught at the Cape Cod Museum of Art, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum, and through the Copley Society of Art.
Rick, a year-round artist on Cape Cod since 1997, lives and works in Eastham.
The purity of the landscape is the subject of his work, and the beauty of nature and wide open space so often found on Cape Cod is what has inspired him as an artist.
If I create pause long enough for the viewer to reflect and appreciate the beauty that is Cape Cod, then I have achieved success in my work. If I convey that beauty in a new or unexpected way, even better.
— says Fleury

Whale Watching - Cape Cod, MA
Provincetown, at the tip of Cape Cod, also berths several whale watching fleets who patrol the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary. Most fleets guarantee a whale sighting (mostly humpback whale, fin whale, minke whale, sei whale, and critically endangered, the North Atlantic Right Whale), and one is the only federally certified operation qualified to rescue whales. Provincetown has also long been known as an art colony, attracting writers and artists. The town is home to the Cape's most attended art museum, the Provincetown Art Association and Museum. Many hotels and resorts are friendly to or cater to gay and lesbian tourists and it is known as a gay mecca in the summer.[

The Edge of Chaos
A place at the edge of chaos allows for change, sensitivity and openness. It is a dynamic state. Science is coming to understand that there are self-organizing systems where complex and unpredictable substrates develop simple, large scale patterns. The whirlpool is an example of this sort of self-organizing system. Energy moves through it without the structure breaking down, creating a dynamic order.
Disappearing
The things suspended here are obsolete, worn by time, caught in the moment just before they disappear entirely. Their world is already gone. Most of them were used before we existed. Natureís detritus has also been caught just before it dissolves into nothingness. All appears to be whirling, yet we know it is still. Things appear weightless, yet we know they are not. Nevertheless is suspended for a moment between being and not being.
