Judge halts BLM roundup of wild horses at Pryor Range in Montana and Wyoming
BILLINGS- A federal judge has delayed the start of this weekend’s gather of 17 wild horses by the Bureau of Land Management in the Pryor mountains in Montana and Wyoming.
U.S. District Court Judge Susan Watters on Friday sided with plaintiffs Gingers Kathrens and the Cloud Foundation in placing a 14-day halt on the roundup, which the BLM has conducted at the Pryor Mountain Horse Range three times since 2009.
Watters wrote that the BLM failed to prove that the roundup would not result in the “permanent loss of genetic diversity of the Pryor Herd.”
The horses in the 38,000-acre range are believed to be descended from horses transported to the United States by Spanish conquistadors in the 1500s and Crow tribal horses.
Watters scheduled another hearing for September 28 to rule on a preliminary injunction to stop the roundup entirely.
This spring, the BLM estimated the Pryor mustang population at 154, according to court documents. The BLM gathers the horses to prevent overgrazing and damage of the prairies. In years past, the agency has captured the animals using helicopters or bait traps, then released them to private owners or other rangelands.
The horses are protected by the Wild Free Roaming Horses and Burros Act passed by Congress in 1971, which designated the BLM as the federal management responsible for managing the horses.
Kahrens and the Cloud Foundation, a Colorado-based horse conservation group, filed suit against the U.S. Department of Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke, who oversees the BLM, on August 17.
“I hope this is a turning point for America’s beleaguered wild horse herds that have been so cruelly treated, and that the BLM will finally adopt human methods of management that take into account the essential need for family structures and the basic right to live in freedom as the Wild Horse and Burro Act intended,” Kahrens said in a written statement.
MTN News sent a request for comment to the Department of Interior press office and will update this story with any response.

Pryor Mountain Mustang behavior
The Mustangs are our symbol of Freedom and roam throughout the United States. Anna took a fortunate few to explore the Pryor Mountains, Montana in search for herds. We could not have imagined what we were about to see...we were calling and the Mustangs responded.

Hiking Adventure on Wild Horse Island, Montana
Good buddy John H. took us across Flathead Lake from Safety Bay to Wild Horse Island. We hiked to the high point, and we were treated to quite the show with some giant bighorn rams and views of Flathead Lake. Hike to the high point of the island mainly follows a series of well-worn sheep trails.
Mustangs On The Mountain
1997. This program is about the mustangs of the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range. For generations, a herd of mustangs has survived in this harsh landscape. They are one of the most unique bands of wild horses in existence. Their distinctive markings -- the solitary stripe down the back and tiger-like slashes on the legs -- are signs of primitive ancestry. Some believe they carry the blood of Spanish horses that date back to 400 years ago. This is a story of how the Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range came to be, and of the efforts needed to preserve this symbol of the American West.
Exploring Backroads of Montana's Pryor Mountains: Big Ice Cave, Wildflowers, Chief Plenty Coups SP
Come along for a drive through the backroads of Montana's Pryor Mountains! We're taking the back way from Billings and heading to the Big Ice Cave via Pryor Gap Road.
You'll see why we download Google maps for offline use whenever we are heading into off-grid country like this for exploring. This is one of the best hacks we've ever discovered. It is really nice to be able to pull up a GPS satellite image of where you are at any time... especially when the road turns out to not be where you expected!
Along the way, we do a little exploring, as always. ????Montana is amazing during in June / early July. The wildflowers are going absolutely nuts! This doesn't last long. Soon the drought of summer is going to set in so we soak up all this color while we can. We also stop off at Chief Plenty Coups State Park for a little side trip. On days like today, it is more about the journey than the destination.

The Pryor Mountain Mustang is a substrain of Mustang considered to be genetically unique and one of the few strains of horses verified by DNA analysis to be descended from the original Colonial Spanish Horses brought to the Americas by the Spanish. They live on the Pryor Mountains Wild Horse Range located in the Pryor Mountains of Montana and Wyoming in the United States, and are the only Mustang herd remaining in Montana. They are protected by the Wild and Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971 and managed by the Bureau of Land Management , who has set the optimum herd number at 120 animals. Genetic studies have revealed that the herd exhibits a high degree of genetic diversity and a low degree of inbreeding, and BLM has acknowledged the genetic uniqueness of the herd. Pryor Mountain Mustangs are relatively small horses, exhibit a natural ambling gait, and domesticated Pryor Mountain Mustangs are known for their strength, sure-footedness and stamina.
Feral horses are documented as living in the Pryor Mountains by the early 1700s, although they may have been there since the late 1600s. By the late 1800s, thousands of feral horses inhabited the area. In the early 1900s, many of the unbranded horses were rounded up, to allow domesticated livestock to graze the range without competition, and by 1964 there were only around 200 horses left. In 1964, the BLM announced that the horses would be removed altogether, to the outrage of the public. The controversy continued until 1968, when the BLM was legally stopped from removing all of the horses, and the area declared a Wild Horse Refuge. After the 1971 signing of the WFRHBA, the BLM spent the 1980s and 1990s conducting population studies and developing management and adoption policies; during this time, numerous genetic studies were also completed.

Wild mustang adventure Wyoming
I was in America July 2017 to learn more about mustangs, america and native americans. I went on a mustang adventure in Wyoming with Blue Sky Sage and we camped in the bushes for a week, living in tipis, riding out in the wilderness looking for wild horses.
There was no reception and no electricity so I couldn't film a lot since I couldn't charge the batteries on the cameras, but I took a lot of photos and got to film a little with my photo-camera and my go pro. Here is a few minutes film from a week with incredible adventure!
If you want to see the photos I took here is the link:
