Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park is a United States National Historical Park located on the west coast of the island of Hawaiʻi in the U.S. state of Hawaiʻi. The historical park preserves the site where, up until the early 19th century, Hawaiians who broke a kapu (one of the ancient laws) could avoid certain death by fleeing to this place of refuge or puʻuhonua. The offender would be absolved by a priest and freed to leave. Defeated warriors and non-combatants could also find refuge here during times of battle. The grounds just outside the Great Wall that encloses the puʻuhonua were home to several generations of powerful chiefs.

Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park, Hawaii
Extending along the lava flats of the Kona Coast, Pu'uhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park is home to some of the most significant traditional Hawaiian sites in the Hawaiian archipelago. One of the most prominent features of the park is the pu'uhonua or place of refuge which is enclosed by the Great Wall, a massive 965 foot long masonry wall. Serving as a sanctuary in ancient times for defeated warriors, noncombatants, and those who violated the kapu (sacred laws), the Pu'uhonua o Hōnaunau remains a most sacred place to those step foot on its grounds. The protected waters of Hōnaunau Bay combined with the availability of water from brackish springs provided the ideal location for the ali'i-Hawaiian royalty-whom established important residential and ceremonial sites nearby, an area known today as the Royal Grounds. For several centuries, the pu'uhonua, the Royal Grounds and adjacent areas formed one of the primary religious and political centers within the traditional district of Kona.

Honaunau National Historic Park
Honaunau National Historic Park on the Big Island of Hawaii is an educational trip back in time to an earlier era in Hawaii. Kapu, or sacred laws, were of utmost importance to Hawaiian culture and the breaking of kapu could mean death. A kapu-breaker's only chance for survival was to evade his pursuers and make it to a puuhonua, or a sacred place of refuge. Honaunau is one such place and offers an exciting look back at some of Hawaii's darker traditions.
Puuhonua o Honaunau Visitor Management 01-13-19
On Sunday, January 13th 2019, ten lineal descendants of the South Kona district stood voluntary posts at Pu’uhonua o Honaunau National Park, filling ranger duties to maintain visitor safety on behalf of Federal employees that are laid-off amidst the longest Government shutdown to date. Concerned residents from the Hana region have exercised similar stewardship at the Ohe’o National Park in Kipahulu and the Haleakala National Park volcano summit.
The Kua Hawaii Project has witnessed the National Park’s inability to protect park resources across the State and considers the parks and other federal lands around the country to be in a state of crisis. Fragile ecosystems are being damaged and trashcans are overflowing. The group organizes resident volunteers, contributing their time to fill the void for National Park Rangers during this interim of the Government shutdown.Resident participants are trained by Kua Hawaii Project leaders and then provide field advising; extending safety briefings along with cultural and historical information to park visitors.
The Kua Hawaii Project does clean-ups and trash removal efforts on weekends and notes its objectives are to care for and protect various sacred sites in the area. Any residents across the State of Hawaii interested in volunteering their time in this capacity, please email kuahawaiiproject@gmail.com

I had just taken a swim at Puuhonua o Honaunau on the Big Island of Hawaii. After I returned to my car, this procession began, and I found out later it was the closing ceremony for a weekend of festivities, where Hawaiian cultural practices were demonstrated.
In the front row, to the left of the king (with the large head dress) is my friend, Kehau. She gave me my Hawaiian name (Kauwila) and teaches and practices Hawaiian lomilomi massage and Hawaiian chant.
