Mahi Fishing In Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
***Full report available at
This November my wife Lauren and I are staying in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, where I will be working and fishing for mahi mahi and whatever else I can find. In this video we are fishing on a local panga boat, in the Los Arcos area of Banderas Bay, Puerto Vallarta, for mahi mahi (also called dorado or dolphinfish).
One major benefit of the internet is that it allows me to carryon my day-to-day business activities from anywhere in the world without issue. In fact I sometimes find it easier to work abroad than at home, and my productivity will oftentimes increase. For the next couple of weeks I will be blogging from Mexico, where it is currently 80 degrees, sunny and flat calm.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico Spin Cast Fishing - Popping (Day 2) Episode 7
Day Two - Puerto Vallarta, MX
The fishing turned for the better for one of the boats that went South on intel from a local. Two boats went to the far north and tried to make something happen, what happened wasn’t epic on the catch rate side of the equation, but went up a notch with a full load of Tecate and Black Marlin salad. The scenery at both locations made for a nice treat, casting against high banks and crashing surf for the first time was something I’ll never forget. For those who wanted quantities of bent rods, South was the answer, for those that went South and fought large Jack Crevalle, their sights were set on offshore yellowfin for day three.
My first day fishing with Danny Gomez, something I’ve waited a long time to do, was as expected. A high quality individual who like many fishermen wanted to forge his own bite where his instincts told him to go. When it was obvious the fish weren’t there in numbers, it took no convincing to head offshore and make a few baits for a large dogtooth snapper. An unknown tried to eat the skipjack and didn’t have the authority to fully inhale the bait. The Hail Mary we threw didn’t connect, and off came the Braid belt. Towards the end of day, I couldn’t help but feel my anxiety build, and moderate frustration set in. Two days of casting yielded a small Jack and one Needlefish. The second Northbound boat had the same experience.
The dial in was complete, South was optimal for those of us who needed, badly, the battles we were sure to hear about during cocktail hours. You’ll hear talk of “angler priority” in upcoming videos, several of us were deemed righteous for this tag, even though my instinct told me to go offshore and target tuna on day three, my Thorne Brothers Custom Temple Reef looked so fresh after its bath that I couldn’t deny its needs and my wants.
The division between tourists and fishermen is something I’d like to write on. Normally the line is crystal clear between vacation fishing for the experience and fishing to fulfill a void that rests in every fishermen’s soul, that bite, ripping drag, a fast release and repeat. The beauty of Banderas bay blurred this line, with the help of several cervezas, and put the experience in perspective for me. The perception of a trip like this for a tourist is to arrive day one and catch fish all day. We know this isn’t going to happen, not by a long shot, but something in all of us wants it so badly that it brushes closer to an expectation than it should. I’m slightly embarrassed that I fell into this mind trap, I forced myself to let go for day three, up next, things turned around.
Rock Fishing From Shore In Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
Here in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, there is a 100 yard rock outcropping from which I can cast poppers into depths of more than 30 feet of turqoise water.
Being able to cast lures into water that deep is a really unique opportunity. For example on Cape Cod, most of the time when fishing from shore I casting lures into less than 10 feet of water.
There is no telling what species of fish one might encounter when fishing a spot surrounded by such deep water! In fact we caught mani while fishing in a boat not far offshore at all from where this rocky outcropping is located.
I discovered the rocky outcropping a few days ago, and I feel it holds great potential. The video below was filmed during my first trip at this spot. I am casting a TA Bomb Popper when a hard fighting jack crevalle smashes it right on the surface!
Timestamps:
0:10 - walking out to the spot
3:25 - underwater footage of fish at similar rocky outcroppings
5:06 - talking about the lure, ANGLR etc.
6:02 - hooked up!
7:48 - trying to land the fish
9:05 - the release
Equipment used in this video:
Van Staal VR175
Tsunami 8' 6 three piece travel rod
50lb Power Pro braid
50lb Seagur Blue Label Fluorocarbon
Tactical Angler Bomb Popper yellow 2 ounce

This time my friend Ezequiel had to take out one of those Roosterfish that do not catch every day and give away an epic battle worth remembering. Unfortunately the rooster can not survive. Ezequiel had all the intentions of releasing it, and we made the attempt to hurt him as little as possible, yet it was very difficult, Ezequiel tired, the emotion of the moment, did not receive support by those present try to oxygenate it better and apart the conditions of the sea (waves strong), could not be released successfully.
But we left a great teaching and knowledge that we will have to put into practice if we have to live another similar situation, comment that the fish was recovered and donated to one of the friends present, and did the corresponding honors.

Puerto Vallarta, Mexico Fishing (Day 5) Episode 10
Part X - Puerto Vallarta, MX Kite Fishing (Day 5)
A loaded up Panga headed to Corbeteña with Boyd LaFleur, Blake LaFleur and Capt. Danny Gomez this second to last day of our trip, in search of yellowfin tuna on poppers and live bait via kites. Although there is little evidence of Blake and I casting, there was a casting marathon in the bow of the Dhamar. I literally wore the paint off of a popper (defective) and after seeing the only small wolf pack of tuna on the reef deny our lures, it was apparent that the live bait and kites were going to be the best option. Favorable kite wind for the boat ride to Corbeteña had our Captains excited, but, upon arrival the wind died. The solution, get the helium balloons. The problem, someone left the tank open at the docks the night before and leaked it all. Long lining live bait still worked, of course it helped to have Boyd at the helm and Danny running lines while Blake and I casted like it was our last day. After hours of hot lapping the the rock structure, Boyd found a corner that was home to a crafty Wahoo. This fish became a mark after 3 hookups and break offs and one follow in on a stick bait. This single fish consumed Boyd, a man on a mission, when we finally got a good hook and Danny gaffed it, well, you can hear the excitement. A big photo session was held afterwards with everyone on the team getting involved.
Earlier in the week our crew sent a scout boat to Corbeteña, they determined that it wasn’t quite happening as hoped. Regardless of that report, everyone had to spin the wheel once because there were some fish there. My spin landed on yellowfin tuna, my first, definitely not the size I was hoping for, but enough to get infected. I was impressed at the power a 15 pounder had, unfortunately, I didn’t find the battle that allowed me to say, “I can’t imagine a 100 pounder.”, I still have no idea what it is like to put a big drag setting on a fish and have it pull off a spool of line. Some guys will say they want nothing to do with a fight like that, I may end up feeling that way too, but right now there is no way to know. I plan on finding out, a giant yellowfin on spinning tackle is still top priority, one could say I am invested.
This was one of those days that I could tell was going to be special, sleeping the night before was a little more difficult. Blake and I had fished with Snook Mafia the previous day, but had not spent a day together in the Panga. Him and I bonded through planning and equipping ourselves with gear many months before the trip. Almost daily interactions regarding things like PE ratings, spool capacities, drag equivalents and how to use it all. The storyline for this trip would’ve had a Hollywood ending if we would have crushed tuna this day 5, but life is not like the movies, calendar date trips cannot be guaranteed success and this story is just beginning.

Deep Sea Fishing, Puerto Vallarta, Mexico
During my family's reunion in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. A few of us decided to charter a fishing boat to take us out on Banderas Bay to do some fishing. After about 3 hours, we finally got a bite. We all helped reel in a huge Crevalle Jack fish. Not what we were hoping for, but at least it was something. It took about 20 minutes to finally reel it in all the way and get it on the boat. We finished the day with only one fish but it was more than enough for a huge meal for the whole family.

Marlin in Puerto Vallarta
We went out for a day targeting striped marlins about 15 minutes outside of the marina of Puerto Vallarta! It was an action pack day marlin jumping and reels screaming. We had the chance spot them and get them on spinning reels witch was pretty awesome.

Puerto Vallarta Fishing Trip 2018
We made tons of memories as a family on a fishing charter in the Spring of 2018 in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico!
Puerto Vallarta 2019 Kayak fishing
Even when we go on a hotel beach holiday I make sure to take travel rods and a few lures. This year in Puerto Vallarta I went out on the hotels free kayaks for an hour or so a day. There were loads of small Bonito, Spanish and Cero mackerel which were so much fun to catch on very ligth tackle.
