The Pulaski Tunnel Trail near Wallace ID located in the Idaho Panhandle National Forest, the Coeur d'Alene River Ranger District, is a Forest Service Monument to the Great 1910 Fire that swept through Idaho and Montana honoring the men who battled it. Remnants of the fire can be found throughout Idaho and Montana to this day 106 years later.
The Pulaski Tunnel Trail winds along the banks of the West Fork of Placer Creek from the parking lot at an elevation of 2,920' to the Pulaski Tunnel Overlook Loop at an elevation of 3,720'. It's a moderate dog friendly 4-mile hike (roundtrip) and takes between 2 to 4 hours. Take water on a hot day and walking sticks will make the trek even more enjoyable. Wallace, Idaho
Wallace is located in the heart of Idaho's silver mining region, and the area has produced more silver than any other mining district in the United States. The area saw a lot of contention between miners and the mine owners - the Army had to come in a couple times to settle things down.
I-90 was built through Wallace on a raised viaduct. The original proposal called for a surface level highway, but that would have destroyed much of the city. Local leaders were able to get downtown Wallace designated as the Wallace Historic District, which spared the historic heart of the city. Minig is still done in the area, but Wallace now draws tourists for the city itself and for access to nearby mountains, trails and lakes.

While looking for a place to write, I found Wallace, Idaho. This historic mining town maintains it's connections to it's beginning by the people who live there and keep it alive today. This video is a collection of photos I have taken during my stay in Wallace. I hope this leads others to seek out adventure in this world of lush pine, old brick and a peaceful place to just be. Wallace sits ready for fresh ideas and new beginnings.

Edward Crockett Ed Pulaski was a U.S.Forest Service ranger based in Wallace, Idaho.Pulaski traveled west and worked as a miner, railroad worker, and ranch foreman before joining the forest service in 1908.He was reputed to be, and personally claimed, that he was a collateral descendant of Casimir Pulaski.

Remembering the August 20th 1910 Fire Arthur Fay's Account,. Wallace Idaho
The Music at the beginning sounds like Batman is going to be in this. Sorry he's not in this one.
The Largest Forest Fire in U.S. History burned its way into the South and East sides of Wallace Idaho on August 20th - 21st, 1910. For 36 hours this fire burned an area as large as the State of Connecticut. A 29 year old by the name of Arthur Fay, with his wife Mabel, and two small children, Adelaide and Clark, witnessed the events of that summer.
In the late 1950's, at the age of 73, Arthur recounted those events the best he could. Although he, his wife, and children escaped, he never returned to Wallace. This is his account of that hot, dry, summer (much like the one we have today in 2015).
This presentation of HWPS and Auggie Dog Productions is to remember the event and honor all those families and fire fighters who lost their lives and the men, women, and children who had their lives changed. This one fire forever shaped how forest fires are fought.
Although this is an abridged account, and sound and voice manipulation was used to drive the narrative and make this more entertaining, we have been careful to keep the original intent and feeling of his thoughts (the best we could).

Re-Discovery of the Long-forgotten Historical Three Blaze Trail. Years of neglect have placed this historical site in jeopardy of extinction. Hopefully, the U.S. Forest Service will place this trail higher on its priority list, and clear the trail for future generations to enjoy.
'Who..What..When??' ELMER'S FOUNTAIN, Wallace Idaho/Mullan Episode 02
Authentic Functioning Folk-Art. My first visit to this place. Elmer's Fountain sits just off the East bound lane of I-90 about 5 & Half miles from Wallace, right before Mullan. Being in the Silver Valley, of course it is made from old mining equipment! Location is beautiful. I didn't hike up to the mine though, perhaps another day (I'm to fat to do much hiking anymore).
Really a nice place. I was a little impressed!

Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes - Wallace, Idaho I-90 Viaduct
Riding the trail through the I-90 viaduct in Wallace, Idaho. Wallace was the site of the last stop light on the US Interstate Highway System (early 1990s). The viaduct was built over the old rail line so that it did not wipe out half of downtown Wallce (a historic district established to save the town from I-90). The rail was then abandoned and converted to a rail-trail.

I90 Viaduct Wallace Idaho
This is a viaduct completed in 1991 (according to Wikipedia) that carries interstate 90 along the edge of town. If it had not been for this viaduct, the town would have been split in two.
