In this video, we join a fly-in/fly-out day tour from Kununurra to fascinating Purnululu National Park on the eastern edge of Western Australia's vast Kimberley region. The park is home to the famous red and black beehive-shaped domes of the ancient Bungle Bungle Range.
This experience begins with a scenic flight from Kununurra across Lake Argyle and the Ord River Irrigation Area. Landing in Purnululu, we transfer to a 4WD vehicle for the short drive to the base of the Bungle Bungle Range, before heading off on a moderate 3-kilometre walk to spectacular Cathedral Gorge. A packed lunch is included, along with afternoon tea. We fly back to Kununurra in the afternoon as the sun begins to set.

The Bungle Bungles, or Purnululu wasn’t discovered until 1983, when airborne treasure-seekers, in the form of a documentary crew filming 'Wonders of WA' unearthed the spectacular striped jewellery we know as the Bungle Bungles.
These fragile formations (a landform found in just a few spots in the world) were created as water eroded the Bungle Bungle Range over the past 20 million years – a relative twinkle in the earth’s geological eye. From the air or from a distance some look like little pyramids or the turrets of ancient castles

Purnululu National Park, Western Australia
Purnululu National Park is in Western Australia, 2054 km northeast of Perth. The nearest town is Kununurra.
Purnululu is the name given to the sandstone area of the Bungle Bungle Range by the Kija Aboriginal people, and the national park is also known as the Bungles National Park. The range is situated within the park, rises up to 578 m above sea level and is famous for the unusual and striking sandstone domes striped with alternating orange and grey bands. The banding of the domes is due to differences in clay content and porosity of the sandstone layers. The grey banding is cyanobacteria which grows on the layers where moisture accumulates. The orange bands are layers of oxidised iron compounds that dry out too quickly for the cyanobacteria to form.
Access to the park by road is via Spring Creek Track from the Great Northern Highway approximately 250 km south of Kununurra. The track is 53 km long and is only usable in the dry season for 4-wheel-drive vehicles. It will take approximately 3 hours to negotiate that distance to the visitor centre. Access by air is less painful and helicopter flights are available from Turkey Creek Roadhouse, 187 km south of Kununurra, or by light aircraft from Kununurra.
There are two public campgrounds in the Park - Walardi to the south, near Cathedral Gorge and Picaninny Creek, and Kurrajong to the north near Echidna Chasm. They are basic campgrounds which offer water, shared fireplaces with a limited supply of wood provided (no collecting because it's a National Park) and pit toilets. Booking ahead is advisable since you don't want to be turned back after the long drive in from the highway.

We are full-time travelling family who are discovering the world.
Watch as we continue our journey doing the big lap around Australia. In this video, we are exploring the Purnululu National Park also known as The Bungle Bungles.
One the way into the National Park, we camp at Spring Creek Area and the remaining of our stay, we camp at Kurrajong campground. We hike Echidna Chasm trail in the North and Cathedral Gorge trail in the South of the National Park. All while 23 weeks pregnant and with a toddler!
What a great adventure!

Our little family is made up of Remi (Papa/Daddy), Lauren (Maman/Mummy) , Gabrielle and Olivier. We are an international family and together we have 4 nationalities; Canadian, Australian, French and Bajan.

memories in our heads rather than things in our pockets ... and that’s what we love!
Since having Gabrielle, we have traveled Australia, Morocco, France, Spain, Switzerland, China and Canada. In her first year of life she has traveled through 5 continents of the world and we don’t intend to stop.

Australia is an amazing mainland country, famous for its unusual nature. One of the interesting local attractions is the Bungle Bungle Ranges, located in Purnululu National Park. This is one of the most beautiful places in Australia, which is 2003 was included in the UNESCO list.
Purnululu Park is located in the state of Western Australia and is located on the Kimberley Plateau. It was founded in 1987, and its area is almost 24 thousand hectares. The name Purnululu translated from Aboriginal language is translated as sandstone. It is from this sedimentary rock that the Bungle-Bungle mountain range is composed, which was accidentally discovered in 1982 during the filming from the air. bangles

Knapp 400 km von Derby und 300 km von Kununurra entfernt befindet sich die kleine Idylle des Purnululu National Park. Wer in dem Örtchen Ord River die Kreuzung zum National Park erreicht, den trennen 53 km Schotterpiste von seinem Ziel. Für die Strecke bis zum Visitor Center sind 2 bis 3 Stunden veranschlagt, außerdem ist die „Straße“ nur für 4WD Fahrzeuge geeignet.
Der Purnululu National Park fühlt sich an jeder Stelle an, als hätte man ein anderes Universum betreten und macht jeden Aufenthalt zu einen unvergesslichem Erlebnis.
