Qinhuai River (Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
The Qinhuai River (秦淮河) is a tributary of the Yangtze with a total length of 110 km. It flows through central Nanjing and is called Nanjing's mother river. It is the life blood of the city. The Qinhuai River is divided into inner and outer rivers.
The scenic belt along the Qinhuai River meets with the Confucius Temple at the center and the river serving as a bond. The belt, featuring attractions such as Zhanyuan Garden, the Confucius Temple, Egret Islet, China Gate as well as the sailing boats in the river and pavilions and towers on the riverbanks, is a blend of historic sites, gardens, barges, streets, pavilions, towers, folk culture and customs.
Restaurant on the Qinhuai River
The Qinhuai is a branch of the mighty Yangtze River has nursed the rich civilization of the region. The inner parts of the river were once the red-light district - famous throughout the nation, during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Painted boats with red lanterns once shuttled to and from, heavily made-up, gifted alms all became historical things. A busy colorful bazaar has gradually taken shape here. Now the flourishing riverside area is similar to the Nanjing Road of Shanghai, and some call it the mini Nanjing Road.
Small shops, stores, restaurants and bars cluster the area. One can find everything here ranging from colorful trinkets to local specialties. At night, the whole area's lit up with colorful lights, creating a very vivid scene. A lively street market is set up in the area and both locals and tourists take part in the bargain hunt. Taking a leisurely stroll along the riverside, seeing the Chinese vendors doing their business or boarding colorfully decorated boats on the ancient river are memorable.
The most prominent part of Qinhuai River Scenic area in history is famous as a residential area of Qin Huai Ba Yan (秦淮八艳; the eight Beauties of Qinhuai), eight famous courtesans during the Ming-Qing transition period. They were recorded in the book Banqiao Zaji (板桥杂记) by Yu Huai (余怀). They were Gu Hengbo (顾横波), Dong Xiaowan, Bian Yujing (卞玉京), Li Xiangjun, Kou Baimen (寇白门), Ma Xianglan, Liu Rushi and Chen Yuanyuan.
During the Nanjing Massacre in 1937, Qinhai River was reddened with blood, as the river was filled with tens of thousands of bodies.
Many Chinese folk songs about the massacre talk in detail about the river during this time.
Sightseeing
The area is a highly popular destination with both locals and tourists, and many see or buy goods here, or just take in the sights. Many visitors find it a good place to taste the local cuisine. The snack stalls dotted the area, and offer a range of food: (baozi) steamed buns-stuffed with pork, and other delicate fillings, Bawei Dawei Doufunao (eight-flavored jellied bean curd pastries) roasted beef, salty duck, animal stomach, chicken feet (phoenix feet) and much more.
The former residence of famed courtesan Li Xiangjun is located along the Qinhuai River and is open to the public.

Qin Huai (Chin Whai) –Qinhuai River 秦淮-秦淮河畔 1967
From Qin Huai's 1968 4 track EP 秦淮*春花美麗 on Eagle Records - TK 1052. A beautiful song and rendition about a very special river. Let nju.gov.cn and Roy Kesey tell us more: The “Mother River” of Nanjing, Qinhuai River is the cradle giving birth to ancient culture of Jinling (Nanjing) ...consider the Yangtze as the ego of Nanjing, and the city wall as its superego ... its id: the Qinhuai River ... it is the section that passes through Nanjing which is the most significant, as for centuries it was here that the women of the flower boats were found. The river had long since been famous as a trading center ... the riverbank properties, including the flower boats, grew ever more lucrative. For a price, one could choose songs for the women to sing as old men poled the boats downstream; for a significantly higher price, the old men could be left on the bank ... many of these women were highly cultured, skilled in the classical arts of calligraphy and painting, of singing and dancing, even of chess, and in the best of cases it was these skills that attracted their customers.
According to Ye Zhaoyan’s Old Nanjing: Reflections of Scenes on the Qinhuai River ... the flower boats flourished again for a time in the late Qing, but in the years of the Republic, growing pollution and heavy construction led the women to move from the banks of the river to the 'song-and-tea houses' located in and around Gongyuan Street. Such was the situation in 1949 when the Communist armies took Nanjing, and did their best to stamp out the industry altogether ... the Qinhuai has not always been the city's erotic core; it was once simply a river known as Huaishui, and its current course has little in common with its original one ... The riverbanks are now lined primarily with restaurants, apartment buildings and hotels ... the flower boats are nowhere to be seen; in their place are tour boats ... beginning in 1996, the city put a great deal of effort and money ... into cleaning up the water ... it is now a pleasant urban waterway. The Eight beauties of Qinhuai River are featured in the video as well as the women of Qinhuai River.
Qin Huai (Chin Whai) was born in January, 1938, and since his early years, was passionate about charity work. He himself knew what it was like to be young and poor, often going to neighbours to borrow rice porridge for his family to eat. In his heart, he was always thinking of orphanage children and nursing homes for the elderly. His compassion for others knew no limits. As he started his singing career in 1961, he was already appealing to the entertainment industry to put on charity performances to raise money for victims of disasters and for those in severe need. But for Qin Huai, helping such people in this way was not enough. Educating them towards self-welfare was also important, and this included music, aimed towards helping people become both healthier and happier! His main recording career was relatively short. His 1966白雲 White Cloud LP on Eagle Records being a highlight. However, his writing career has spanned over half a century. He celebrated the Golden Jubilee year of his writing with the release of The Selected Works of Qin Huai - a boxed set of four books. Alongside his writing career was his lifelong charity vocation. In particular, the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped (SAVH)
January 2016 was a very special month in Qin Huai's life. He had previously been married to actress Angela Yu Chien who had died in 2000. Now, just before his 78th birthday, he married, 38 year-old artist Li Yujie in Singapore. Quin Huai had helped teach her to sing, and they both performed at the Beacon of Light Charity Concert that month. Qin Huai has received many commendations and awards including the “Top 10 Far East Singers” and the “Top 10 Hong Kong Singers”, but what has endeared him to so many people is his life-long charity work. He has become known as the ‘Charity King. An extraordinary man.

蜜意柔情为谁流露 为谁流露
歌的歌 舞的舞 朵朵樱唇为谁涂 层层脂粉为谁敷
美语柔情为谁倾吐 为谁倾吐

Lyrics: Dong Sun Composer: Yao Min
Tonight there's wine, drunk tonight, drunk on the Qinhuai River
The moon and the lamplight shines on the embankment flowers and railings
Ladies singing songs and dancing, and sounds of love for the lovestruck
Who reveals for whom the sweetness and honey tenderness
Song and dance, blossoming cherry lips - coated layers of powder
Eyes flashing, pouring out sweet tenderness and emotions
