After a long and full life, Carl Vernon Nelson died in Olney, MD on July 3, 2018, a month before his 89th birthday. Carl was born in Taskee, Missouri on Aug. 3, 1929, the son of Robert I. Nelson and Edith Keele Nelson. At age 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served 22 years, including in Korea. On Oct. 6, 1950, he married Elizabeth Griffin (“Miss Liz”) in her home town of Ayden, NC, not far from the Marine base at which he then was stationed. He and Miss Liz were happily married for 64 years. She passed away on Jan. 29, 2015, a few months after they moved to Brookdale of Olney in Maryland from their long-time home in Irvine, California.
After the Marine Corps, Carl had a second career of 24 years at the Douglas Aircraft Company (now Boeing). Starting as a junior, non-degree-holding aeronautical engineer, Carl retired from Boeing as a division manager supervising 3,000 people. During these years he also was a deacon in his church, a Mason, and a Boy Scout leader.
Following retirement from Boeing, Carl and Liz traveled extensively, often with family members, throughout the USA and the world. They became avid bridge players. Visits to their cabin at Big Bear Lake and golf outings with his pals also were favorite pastimes for Carl during these years. Earlier he had played tennis. He was a courtly escort at Miss Liz’s numerous formal events as she rose through the ranks of the Eastern Star Masonic Order.
In what was like a third career, Carl served many years as a volunteer for the American Cancer Society in Orange County, CA. He drove vans to pick up patients for their doctor appointments and treatments, and he took responsibility for maintenance of the entire van fleet. In the early 2000s, Carl was honored three times as the American Cancer Society Volunteer of the Year.

Quantico National Cemetery is a national cemetery in Triangle, Virginia for veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces. Adjacent to and originally part of Marine Corps Base Quantico, it was established as a national cemetery in 1983 with an area of 725 acres (293 ha).

When a loved one passes, I think a lot of people avoid visiting their graves because they think it is sad or depressing. I am so thankful Dad is at Quantico because those we have lost to war, disease, or age are never forgotten. Even after generations of family stop remembering, others will. I was there today as Young Marines were cleaning the markers. Scouts had already placed small flags at the graves and larger ones stood as proud sentinels throughout the park. As I was leaving, I saw a group of motorcycles traveling through. I pulled over to watch them exit the park and got this video. If you know this group, please tell them that although he did not die while actively serving, the family of James “Al” Baker (Vietnam) thank them for making the first Memorial Day without him a happy memory.
UPDATE: This group was not just riding through. They met up with people in cars to place flags in the sections near the exit. It was a huge group.

Museum of the Marine Corps, Triangle (Quantico), VA - January 2013
The Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, Virginia (just outside Quantico) is an excellent museum. I went there on January 27, 2013, and shot this video -- it is completely unauthorized by anyone at the museum, and I did not coordinate this with anyone there. I tried to tell the story of the entire museum, which isn't really possible in an 8-minute video.
I highly recommend a visit to the Museum of the Marine Corps. Not only is it free, it is a terrific way to spend a day.
I shot this video with a Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS20 digital camera and edited it with Corel VideoStudio Pro x4 software.

So we paid tribute to my father-in-law by visiting his grave at Quantico National Cemetery then completed our tour of the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Virginia. It was a great day to pay our respects to Dad and go to the museum he enjoyed to visit as well. We sure miss you Grandpa Joe.

STORYLINE:
War graves in the US are being inscribed with the name of the military operation in which the fallen soldiers served.
Nearly all Arlington National Cemetery gravestones for troops killed in Iraq or Afghanistan are inscribed with the slogan-like operation names the Pentagon selected to promote public support for the conflicts.
Families of fallen soldiers and Marines are being told they have the option to have the government-furnished headstones engraved with Operation Enduring Freedom or Operation Iraqi Freedom at no extra charge, whether they are buried in Arlington or elsewhere.
At this mill in Vermont, it''s steady work turning out the marble headstones that mark the final resting place for fallen soldiers.
Along with the World War II and Vietnam-era veterans comes a constant trickle of casualties from Iraq and Afghanistan.
But their headstones mark a change.
Headstone information used to be limited to name, rank, service branch and sometimes the conflict and foreign country in which a soldier fought.
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) says families have always had the option of including information like an operation or battle, but had to pay extra before a 1997 policy change allowed them to include such information for free.
But families were rarely informed of the option until the 2003 invasion of Iraq, when the VA specifically told cemeteries and funeral homes across the country that surviving relatives could have Operation Iraqi Freedom and, for those serving in Afghanistan, Operation Enduring Freedom etched on headstones at no extra cost.
The VA now covers the cost of all engraving, including endearments such as beloved son, brother and husband or descriptive information of how a soldier died, like Black Hawk crash.
The move to include operation names on the headstones has baffled many, including the contractors making the stones.
Operation Just Cause was the 1989 invasion of Panama to capture Manuel Noriega.

The Marine Corps War Memorial (commonly called the Iwo Jima Monument), outside Arlington National Cemetery, was assembled in 1954. This video captures the scale and grandeur of the monument to the courageous American Marines that raised the flag, 23 February 1945 on Mount Suribachi, to symbolize their victory over Japanese forces during World War II.

Millennium Site - Arlington National Cemetery
The Arlington National Cemetery (ANC) Millennium site that was officially opened on September 6, 2018 ... is a beautiful, natural area that supports the cemetery’s long term goal of optimizing interment space. The Millennium is contiguous with the existing cemetery in order to maintain future active operations and preserve the ANC experience.
This new 27-acre expansion provides 27,282 interment spaces that are located either above or below ground. Columbarium courts offer 16,400 above-ground niche spaces for cremated remains, while the 10,882 in-ground burials will be split between traditional and over-size burials (1,422), in-ground cremated remains (3,189), and pre-placed liners (6,271).
The Millennium project was conceived in the 1990s to help extend the life of the cemetery as an active burial ground. This modern day burial site blends the iconic look of ANC with a modern day design.
