As part of their farewell, Madame Astrid has organized an art exhibition titled ‘171003 The Queen’s Art Gallery’: A Showcase Of Artwork From Across 3 Continents at the Queen Sirikit Gallery.
With Bangkok’s first Bangkok Art Biennale happening in October 2018, those looking to continue their contemporary art streak after exploring the BAB shouldn’t miss out on this exhibition either.
And what artwork can visitors expect at the exhibition? Today, we will have an honorary guide to lead us to appreciate works by internationally renowned artists from different countries across three different continents during an opening reception on October 26.

Bangsai Art & Crafts Centre Ayutthaya Thailand
On the bank of the Chao Phraya River in Ayutthaya province, north of Bangkok, the Bangsai Arts & Crafts Training Centre has more than 800 students from impoverished families, teaching traditional skills in arts and crafts in 30 schools. Patronized by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Centre's main objectives are to encourage farmers to preserve Thai crafts and acquire artistic skills to earn extra income.
The training school starts after the harvest season when the farmers have more free time. Students are given instruction and lodging free of charge and some pocket money for personal expenses during their training. Their training course will be held everyday except on Mondays. Visitors to the school can watch students in their training to make Thai handicraft products in exquisite craftsmanship. These products are later distributed to various branches of Chitrlada shops throughout the country, including the Elephant Pavilion shop located in the Centre.

The Beautiful Photography of King Bhumibol of Thailand
King Bhumibol Adulyadej, of Thailand, who sadly passed away last year, was a man of many talents. As well as being a musician, an inventor, and inspiration to the people of Thailand for 70 years, he was also a very talented photographer.
For most of his adult life, whether visiting up country rural Thailand, or attending the most regal of royal events, he was rarely seen without carrying a camera.
As part of the country’s many events to mark the great King’s passing, is an exhibition of his photography, at the Bangkok Art and Cultural Centre. The exhibition contains around 200 of the King’s photographs, many of which have never been seen before. More information can be found from
King Bhumibol was born in the United States, on 5 December 1927. He was the youngest son of Prince Mahidol Adulyadej, the Prince of Songkla, and his commoner wife Mom Sangwan (later Princess Srinagarindra, the Princess Mother). His father was enrolled in the public health program at Harvard University. His father died of kidney failure in September 1929, when King Bhumibol was less than two years old. In 1933 his mother took her family to Switzerland, where he continued his education at the École nouvelle de la Suisse romande in Lausanne. In 1934 King Bhumibol was given his first camera, which ignited his lifelong enthusiasm for photography.
While finishing his degree in Switzerland, King Bhumibol visited Paris frequently. It was in Paris that he first met Mom Rajawongse Sirikit Kitiyakara, daughter of the Thai ambassador to France (Nakkhatra Mangala) and a great-granddaughter of King Chulalongkorn and thus a cousin of King Bhumibol. She was then 15 years old and training to be a concert pianist.
On 4 October 1948, while King Bhumibol was driving a Fiat Topolino on the Geneva-Lausanne road, he collided with the rear of a braking truck 10 km outside Lausanne. He injured his back, suffered paralysis in half of his face and incurred cuts on his face that cost him the sight of his right eye. While he was hospitalised in Lausanne, Queen Sirikit visited him frequently. A quiet engagement in Lausanne followed on 19 July 1949, and they were married on 28 April 1950, just a week before his coronation.
Fashioning the Nation
TITLE: Fashioning the Nation: Fashionability, Female Cultural Agency and Thainess at the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles
SPEAKER: Eksuda Singhalampong
Eksuda Singhalampong (Lecturer, Department of Art History, Silpakorn University, Bangkok, Thailand) discusses Queen Sirikit of Thailand’s contribution to the construction of a Thai cultural identity through her invention of a national dress for women. This was in part achieved to reassert the Royal image and power within the Thai public consciousness following the revolution of 1932 that brought an end to absolute monarchy. In a sense, Queen Sirikit’s cultural project could be seen as a means to establish continuity with a suitable historic past. The project therefore commemorates the Thai monarchy’s dynastic paradigm through cultural patronage and re-centres the royal family within postwar Thai political discourse.
