USA: NEW YORK: PROTESTERS INTERRUPT PRESIDENT CLINTON'S BIRTHDAY

President Clinton is 50 Monday and on Sunday night he celebrated his birthday in big style at New York's Radio City Music Hall.
Politicians and celebrities paid fifteen hundred dollars a head to attend a reception while tickets for a gala dinner in his honour went for thousands of dollars.
But the day was interrupted on several occasions by protestors angered by Clinton's decision to sign a bill imposing large cuts in welfare spending.
The President came to Radio City Music Hall to celebrate his birthday in the company of the rich and famous.
Outside the poor and unknown were staging a different kind of reception.
Most were protesting against Bill Clinton's decision to sign a welfare bill that would cut back the nation's welfare system.
As police pushed demonstrators out of the way, they chanted and held up signs in protest.
A member of the left wing Workers World Party, said welfare cuts would only harm the poor.

Guests making their way into Radio City Music Hall avoided the demonstration under police protection.
As entertainers - like singer Tony Bennett - arrived, police arrested some of the protestors.
Earlier in the day, there had been a reception for the Democratic National Committee at a New York Hotel.
50 candles blazed on a birthday cake shaped like an American flag.
President Clinton, First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton and their daughter Chelsea, took to the stage while the crowd sang Happy Birthday.
It took several tries, but the president got most of the candles blown out with Chelsea's help.
A heckler was in the front row, and interrupted Clinton as he began to speak.
Waving a sign saying Stop the Attacks on Workers and Poor , the man condemned the welfare bill.
Clinton told the crowd to give the man a round of applause and let him go.

Although it was not a campaigning event - the celebration emphasised the age difference between Clinton and his main rival - Bob Dole - who is 23 years older.
But Clinton went on to give Democrats a warning before next week's party convention in Chicago.

I don't want anybody standing up at the platform at the Democratic Convention making demeaning personal remarks about any Republican. Not their nominee, not their nominee's wife. Not any of it. On the other hand, since they neglected to talk about their record for the last two years, I think we ought to remind people about that at every chance we get.

Sunday night, the curtain went up at Radio City Music Hall.
Tickets for the birthday bash went for 250 dollars each, with the money going to the Democratic National Committee to help in election contests across the country.
Tickets to a dinner later were going for up to 15-thousand dollars.
An enthusiastic crowd welcomed the first family.
Hillary Clinton did the honours.

Again, hecklers were in the audience, shouting shame, shame over the president's intention to sign the welfare bill.
Clinton asked the crowd not to rough them up, and said four years from now they'll say you were right Mister President.
The President went on to say the party must prepare for the century ahead.

George Westinghouse was one of the most successful men in the world. A respected engineer, inventor and America's greatest industrialist.
He was a pioneer of the industrial revolution and played a leading role in turning the United States from a young agrarian society into a modern economic powerhouse.
The name Westinghouse has been a household name the world over for more than 100 years because of one man, his love of machines, and his desire to make the world a better place.
The accomplishments that George Westinghouse had in his lifetime had a major impact on the way we live today.
His work in the railroad industry with the Westinghouse air brake, the electrification of the world with Westinghouse alternating current, him being instrumental in developing natural gas as a fuel, and his impact on the shipping industry with the Westinghouse geared marine turbine engine.
George Westinghouse was known as a good person.
He always had a very good rapport with his workers. There was never a strike at any of the Westinghouse companies all the time he had control of them.
And, you know, that was not common back in those days. He certainly was not motivated by greed or money. He really thought that his accomplishments would benefit mankind. And that alone was a driving force for him. This film also engages in the power struggle between Westinghouse and Nikola Tesla.
