New wealth in Siberia - From Moscow to Magadan
The Siberian city of Khanty Mansiysk has become extremely rich thanks to oil. In some parts of Russia, villages are emptying because residents seek better prospects, like the ones happening in Khanty Mansiysk. Jelle visits such a village.
Original title: Siberische belofte
What's left of communism? How big are the differences between the poor and the rich? What is the influence of corruption? Is Russia a young democracy (as former Dutch prime minister Jan Peter Balkenende previously said)? Is it a sovereign democracy (according to Putin) or a fascist regime (as read in The Economist)? Jelle Brandt Corstius is looking for the topics that rule the life of ordinary Russians in Russia.

Ekaterinburg - Екатеринбург | Плотинка Russia Россия | www.Ekaterinburg.TK
What is Interesting in the city?
There are a lot of places of interest in Ekaterinburg - it has a unique mixture of different architectural, historical, and cultural rarities, which may never be repeated. More than 60 monuments of history and culture are located in the city, and 43 of them are considered to be national monuments because of their special significance. That is why Ekaterinburg can claim the formal status as Russia's most historical city.
At present, Ekaterinburg is one of Russia's biggest industrial centres. It's enterprises produce industrial goods for heavy machinery and chemical plant construction, for transportation, and military purposes.
Ekaterinburg is not very old, but over the course of its 280-year history, it has proven itself to be a special and even unique city - not only by it's geographical location, but also by a role as one of the founders of Russian industry. The heart of Ekaterinburg is its dam, which permitted the initial development of the city's industrial base. It was first erected in 1723 and has been reconstructed twice since - now it is recognized as an industrial monument of the 18th century.
Unfortunately, very few buildings of the old factory area have been preserved. Those that do, house the Museum of History, Architecture, and Technology of the Urals, and the Natural Museum - both of which are located in the so-called Historical Park. The oldest building of Ekaterinburg, which dates from 1764 and recently reconstructed, is also situated here. At present this is the Fine Arts Museum. Ekaterinburg of the 18th century was a wooden city, however, the city's first buildings of stone construction also appeared here during this period. At most these were administrative buildings - for example, the Main Board of the mining factories, where the Urals Conservatory is located now.
In the late 18th and the early 19th centuries a new architectural style - classicism, influenced Ekaterinburg landscapes. The palace on Voznesenskaya Hill, with its luxurious park, is the most famous example of this style. Many churches and chapels made the city's panorama very beautiful and picturesque. In the beginning of the 20th century there were about 50 churches, of which only 6 still stand today.
There are quite a few buildings in the constructivist style within the city - typical of this are such examples as the Main Post Office, the Uralskij Rabochij (Ural Worker) printing house, the movie studio, the famous White Tower, the Dinamo recreational centre, etc.
The Soviet period brought new trends to Ekaterinburg's architecture - luxury and rationalism, which reflected the influence both of ideology and asceticism. New tendencies in the development of world architecture have also affected the city. Some of the most well known structures of this time include the Military Headquarters, the Ural Great Polytechnic University, the Railroad Administrative Building, and the Philharmonic Theatre.
The city's history is full of events -many expeditions to Siberia, Central Asia and the Far East passed through Ekaterinburg.
The city was visited by many Russian tsars and members of their families.
The first Russian president, Boris Yeltsin lived and worked here during the 1960s and 1970s.
Among the many monuments in Ekaterinburg are the monuments to Bolshevik Malyshev and The Black Tulip - Russian soldiers during the Afghan campaign named the aeroplanes which delivered the coffins of their dead comrades back to Russia The Black Tulips.
There are so many remarkable places in the 280-year-old Ekaterinburg, that all cannot possibly be described in this small web site. This brief information is intended to provoke the interest of Ekaterinburg's inhabitants and guests of the Urals to the history of our remarkable city.

This is the first day of my Russian trip. I am in Omsk. In this video, you can see how to get a tourist sim in Russia. Also, you will come to know how to get Russian Ruble. Instead of using a money exchanger I used an ATM which had its services available in English. Surprisingly, I got an excellent exchange rate by using the ATM. I have shared the ATM's receipt and the SMS I got from my Indian bank in the video. I don't know this happened because of the Indian bank or it was a special feature of the Russian bank which owns the ATM. I can recommend this bank's ATM to every traveller as it gives a better exchange rate.
In this video, there is a query about a free offer provided by the mobile operator. Watch it and reply in the comments section.

RUSSIA: MOSCOW: PROSTITUTION IS BOOMING
Russian/Nat
In Russia's new free market prostitution is booming.
Moscow's streets are packed with scantily-clad hookers who have flocked to the capital in search of a decent wage.
Prostitution is not a criminal offence but Moscow's hard-pressed police force have been charged with cleaning up the capital's streets.
But with the drastic increase in violent crime many policemen feel their efforts would be better spent elsewhere.
The free market has brought many improvements to Moscow's streets.
Bars, restaurants and night clubs now flourish in a city that was once drab and uninviting.
But together with the nightlife has come something else rarely seen during Soviet times - street prostitution.
Every evening, as Muscovites start to make their way home, hundreds of hookers appear on the streets to begin their working day.
The deal is struck by their pimps, former prostitutes themselves, who then summon the girls so the customers can make their choice.
A steady stream of cars cruises the streets across from Russia's parliament, one of the favourite pick-up spots for Moscow's call girls.
But as darkness falls the Moscow City police force embarks on its nightly attempt to make a dent in a business that now dominates downtown Moscow.
Prostitution in Russia is not a criminal offence but the government considers it an embarrassment and an eyesore.
Police make routine busts but without a law to charge the girls, have to release
them within a few hours.
The majority of the girls are from the provinces and other former republics, where unemployment is high and wages low.
They are charged with not having the proper documents to be in Moscow -- an
old Soviet law designed to limit movement into the capital.
Every evening police station 108 sees a constant stream of prostitutes.
The girls are processed and held for up to six hours before being put back on the streets. A bribe from their pimp can see them released immediately.
The head of Moscow's organised crime department says that since there is no law against prostitution, his men are powerless to get the girls off the streets permanently
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
Even though it is quite clear that they are prostitutes the girls are detained for passport irregularities, or no Moscow registration document, that is for things which have no
connection at all with prostitution
SUPER CAPTION: Vladimir Zolutnitsky, Chief of Moscow Organized Crime Department
In a good month a girl can earn up to three thousand dollars, a small fortune in Russia's bleak provincial towns and villages.
But with no red light district and no brothels, the job has more than its share of risks.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
You get into a car and you don't know what will happen when you get there -- who will be there or what they will do. There may be fifteen men waiting. Some girls have gone
missing for two months and then reappeared.
SUPER CAPTION Dasha, prostitute in Moscow
Women in Russia have been hit harder than most by the transition to a market economy. Particularly those from rural Russia where the economy is at a standstill.
The result has been a massive increase in the numbers of unemployed women who flock to the capital in search of any work they can find. Many of them turn to prostitution as a last resort.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
If there was work, If Yeltsin gave us the opportunity to work normally and for proper money then none of these girls would be walking the street.
SUPER CAPTION, Sveta, prostitute in Moscow
And that would suit the police, too.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
prostitution.
