Pool for Fishing-Alexey Vasiliev
The instant images that insistently arise in your head on the pronunciation of the word Kaluga are a tattered portrait of Konstantin Eduardovich Tsialkovsky from the school physics laboratory and Space, Space, Space. It only vaguely connects with the artistic life of the city, and if truth be told it makes no connection whatsoever. The Moscow public, in astonishment discovered several years ago, thanks to the Stop! Who Goes There? Youth Art Biennial, that young artists live and work en masse in Samara, and in Voronezh, and in Novosibirsk, and they hadn't yet put the city of Kaluga on their map of the arts. Although, nevertheless, Alexei Vasiliev, of whom we will hear more below, is actually from this city. His exhibitions have been held at the Artplay Design Center, the Winzavod Modern Arts Center, the Moscow Museum of Modern Art, within the framework of the very same Stop! Who Goes There?, and in Lisbon, the UAE, Basel and New York to boot -- an entirely worthy list. And the fact that he remains insufficiently appreciated is perhaps not yet a case of negligence, but within a few years (when Vasilyev hits the mark) it could well be.
