Around 15,000 Muslims raced from the Heart of Chechnya mosque to the gates of the Imany Kadyrova mosque in Argun, in the Russian republic of Chechnya, Friday. The 16.4-kilometer race was held to mark the opening of Imany Kadyrova. The building, capable of hosting roughly 15,000 worshippers, is Europe's largest mosque. A helicopter was seen depositing confetti on the runners below.
Chechen republic officials, including Ramzan Kadyrov, whose mother's name was chosen for the new mosque, religious clerics, and delegations from Egypt, Yemen, Palestine, Bahrein, Saudi Arabia, Morocco, UK, Austria, etc. attended the solemn opening ceremony.
The first Friday prayer was held in the mosque in the afternoon, gathering just over 15,000 believers.
The total area of the mosque exceeds 24,000 square meters, with 6,950 of them designated for the mosque itself and 17,000 - for the park surrounding it. Depending on weather, vaults of the mosque change from light-grey to turquoise blue. Walls of the mosque are decorated with the rarest marble. School for Islam opens in Russian mosque
(16 Nov 2018) LEADIN:
A school for Islam has opened in a mosque in Kazan.
The 'One-Day School' offers lessons, from purification rituals to the life of Prophet Muhammad.
STORYLINE:
Galeev mosque in Kazan - now a place of learning as well as devotion.
The Spiritual Board of Tartar Muslims has launched a school for Islam here, called One-Day School.
It offers five lessons - one per week - on the main basics of Islam.
These men are learning the rules for ritual purification.
It is advised to wear a taqiyah, the head should be covered, explains the teacher.
The mosque's Imam, Muhammad Miftakhov, says the project is about knowledge and that no one should feel they have to convert to a faith.
The first thing is faith and then the performance of Salah. Of course if a person doesn't have faith - as we know there is no compulsion in religion - no one should force a person to convert to Islam if he doesn't want to, he says.
The lessons are free, conducted in both Russian and Tatar. Anyone aged from 12 to 60 - regardless of his or her religion - can participate.
Venera Gaynanova is a One Day School student and has been learning the Salah prayer ritual:
I had no experience of performing Salah, no one has taught me but I had this wish (to learn). At the beginning you have lots of questions and I needed a place with like minded people, where we can ask questions together and learn how to perform Salah right, she says.
According to teacher Lilya Ilyasova, the aim of the One-Day School is to help newcomers to Islam get over their fears of doing something wrong.
Sometimes people are afraid to come to the mosque. They have these fears like 'I don't perform Salah' or 'I don't wear hijab' or 'I know nothing, how can I come, they will see that I'm wrong, they will probably berate me', she explains.
However, she reassures: Everyone has his own way to Islam.

Russian By Birth, Muslim By Choice
In the Russian republic of Tatarstan, a majority of the population is Muslim -- including a few ethnic Russians who have chosen to convert to Islam. The decision to change religions demands perseverance in the face of doubts from Christians and Muslims alike. RUSSIA: EID AL ADHA
Russian/Nat
XFA
Russia's Muslims celebrated one of their most important holy days Monday in an atmosphere of official acceptance, with services attended by leading politicians and broadcast live on state television.
Eid al-Adha, which is known in Russia by the Turkish name of Kurban Bairam, commemorates Abraham's sacrifice of a ram to God instead of his son and centers on the ritual slaughter of a sheep or other animal.
Last year was the first time the holiday received broad attention by Russian leaders.
Russia has about 20 million Muslims, making Islam the nation's second-largest religion after the Russian Orthodox Church.
But Orthodoxy receives far more attention from the politicians and the media than Islam or Judaism.
Some observers say the increased attention to Islam is an attempt to win Muslims' support for the Kremlin's war against rebels in Chechnya, a predominantly Muslim region.
The country's chief mufti, or Islamic religious leader, Talgan Tadzhuddin, said at services Monday in the city of Ufa, about 1,200 kilometers (750 miles) east of Moscow, that the war is a necessary measure against terrorists, rather than brothers in faith, the Interfax news agency reported.
Thousands of men listened to the service and prayed standing outside the mosque in a snowstorm. Muslim leaders put attendance at 30,000. President Vladimir Putin issued an official greeting to Muslims on the holiday.

Russia made the muslims Eid prayer prayers in Moscow 2019
Muslims Celebrate End of Ramadan in Moscow
An estimated 12,000 Russian Muslims celebrated Eid al-Fitr, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, in Moscow on Wednesday.
Morning prayers were held in and around the Moscow Cathedral Mosque and on streets nearby the city center, as well as at several other mosques and squares in the capital.
Many worshippers come from Russian regions with predominantly Muslim populations.
Russians and Muslims get on very well with each other. We respect each other. I’m from Tatarstan. There is no place for nationalism, said one worshipper.
We have friendly relations with everyone and it is still like that. We don't divide between Muslims, Christians, we don't do that, said another.
Moscow is multicultural. Russians treat Muslims normally, added another.
Eid al-Fitr, or festival of breaking of the fast, celebrates the conclusion of the 29 or 30 days of dawn-to-sunset fasting during the entire month of Ramadan. The festival is celebrated on the first day of the 10th month of the Islamic lunar calendar and begins when a new moon is sighted in the sky. After dawn prayers, worshippers return home and continue festivities with their friends and families.
Islam is the second most widely followed religion in Russia after Orthodox Christianity, with an estimated 14 percent of the Russian population practicing Islam.

A look at Kazan, Russia's 3rd capital and one of its most multicultural cities
(4 Jun 2018) Russia's third capital is to host four group games, a Round of 16 match and a quarter-final in this year's football World Cup.
Kazan is one of Russia's oldest cities, and, for over 1,000 years, has also been one of its most multicultural.
More than 100 ethnic groups live in the Tatar capital.
The grand Tatar mosque, Qol Sarif, located in the middle of the Kazan Kremlin, is situated right next to an Orthodox Church.
A Jewish synagogue is also nearby, in a neighbouring district.
There is a long-running dispute as to whether Kazan was founded by the Volga Bulgars in the early Middle Ages or by the Mongols of the Golden Horde in the mid-15th century.
However, Finno-Ugric peoples were assimilated by Kipchaks here, then Russians came, and that created the modern Kazan population.
This Khanate (a political entity of Kazan ruled by a Khan) seemed to Ivan the Terrible a little dangerous, although it was friendly towards the Russian Empire, and he found it possible to conquer it (the Khanate of Kazan) to make it easier, said Liya Bushkanets, a professor at the Leo Tolstoy Institute of Philology and Intercultural Communication at Kazan Federal University.
Then Russian troops went to the East. Thus Tatar lines and Russian lines were intermixed here. Plus, there are a lot of folks here, in the Volga region: Chuvash, Mari people are not far from here. Later Jews came here. That's why Kazan turned into a city where an enormous number of nationalities live.
Today, almost a half of Kazan citizens are Tatars, who converse fluently in Russian and Tatar, and observe the Muslim faith.
Many Tatar Muslims grew up with traditional Russian values.
Their creed is often referred to as Euro-Islam as the alternative to religious conservatism and extremism.
Many Tatars are not devout believers, and are secular, as religion in Tatarstan was seriously damaged in Soviet times.
In a small neighbourhood in Kazan's outskirts, an orthodox priest came to talk to an imam, his friend, on a first-name basis.
He later joins Iftar, the evening meal with which Muslims end their daily Ramadan fast at sunset.
Both clergies and their parish help each other to solve the problems of their local community.
There have been no conflicts for the last period of time. Probably, it was in history, let's say. But today we reap the benefits of our ancestors as they managed to create friendly coexistence among religions, Abbyaz Khazrat, the imam of the Tynychlyk mosque, said.
Not only are we not going to kill each other, but, if one needs help with something, we surely are going to come forward. He has parishioners who could help, and I have parishioners who could come to help as well, said Valeriy, the Orthodox priest.
In the city the principle of parity works when the construction of a new mosque implies the onset of an Orthodox church.
Many Jews, whose community in Kazan is one of the largest and most prosperous in the country, say they have almost never faced anti-Semitic sentiments here.
One of the most prestigious schools of Kazan is Jewish: founded 20 years ago in a general education institution, it has been completely reequipped with help from the Jewish diaspora.
Kazan families, including many Tatar Muslims and Russians, want their children to enter the school despite mandatory Hebrew classes, but only one of three applicants gets in.
Recently, Russia's only Museum of Samogon, a Russian moonshine, had opened in Kazan.
The authorities reacted harshly.
