Rame Head Heritage Coast / Spectacular Walk from Plymouth
I have 8h and 16 miles long walk from Plymouth to St Michael's Chapel and back.
My journey starts from Plymouth ferry to Cremyll. From Cremyll I pass Mount Edgcumbe Folly and go to the Kingsand village where I visit the local cafe and try local Apple cake with tea. From Kingsand I pass Rame Head Heritage and go to the St Michael's Chapel which is approximately 1000 years old.
I go back to Cremyll by passing Rame and visiting local Rame Church.

Rame Head
Rame Head is a headland on the Rame Peninsula and is the most easterly point in Cornwall. To one side of the headland is Devon and to the other side is Cornwall. Out to sea from the headland is the Eddystone Lighthouse which is clearly visible from Rame Head and the surrounding area. Rame Head has been used since the Iron Age and was the site of an Iron Age Castle. There was also a village located on the headland as remains of round houses have been found on it. Rame Head, like much of the surrounding area, was used in the war and some wartime constructions have damaged some of the Iron Age remnants of Rame Head.
One of the most notable things about Rame Head is the chapel on top. The chapel, dedicated to St Michael, was first licensed in 1397. The chapel is on the site of a Celtic Hermitage. Although it's abandoned, the chapel still remains however the limewash that it was originally covered with (to make it stand out) is all gone.

Walking On The Rame Peninsula - Inspiration For The Rame Head Collection
Cornwall's Forgotten Corner - Walking On The Rame Peninsula, explore the area that gave us inspiration for the popular The Rame Head Collection. The magical chapel of St Michael and the beautiful beaches of Whitsand Bay in South East Cornwall.
All of my drawings, my collections, are inspired by the landscape that surrounds the studio. My first ever collection, The Rame Head Collection came from countless walks in and around Whitsand Bay, a little bit of Cornwall often forgotten, its steep cliffs dotted with chalets, which were once retreats for Plymouth people during wartime, and are now permanent homes to locals with some available as holiday rentals!
My children have been climbing the cliff since they were babies....urged on by the sight of the sea, sandcastle making and a swim. The journey home, back up the cliff required more encouragement, tired at the end of a long day, their little legs were spurred on by the idea of jelly beans doled out at every bend in the path!
Another steep climb, but, oh, so worth it, is the ascent to the little chapel on Rame Head. Dedicated to St Michael the chapel was first licensed in 1397 and is on the site of a much earlier and ancient, Celtic hermitage. Views from the top are breathtaking and on a clear, calm day you can see for miles....a prominent landmark to sailors and fisherman alike and often the last piece of land they see leaving England and the first they see when returning home....a truly magical place and loved by so many.
From Rame Head, you can walk east to Penlee and on to the villages of Kingsand and Cawsand or west, tracing the path along the cliffs of Whitsand Bay. Next to the car park at Rame Head, is home to a volunteer National Coastguard lookout station. If you visit, do pop in and say hello to the people who work there...got to be one of the best working views in the country!!
There are so many beautiful walks around this little bit of Cornwall, 'the forgotten corner' and if you haven't already managed a visit, I would really recommend you add it to your 'to do' list.
We would love to hear about your favourite Cornish walk.....so please do comment below.....

Mevagissey is an attractive old town which was once the centre of Cornwall’s pilchard fishery and which still boasts a working harbour, with a few dozen small fishing boats. It has a tradition of boat building dating back to 1745. Many of the old buildings, constructed of cob and slate, bear testimony to a time when the large shoals of pilchards were the livelihood of the whole village.
The name Mevagissey is derived from the names of two saints, St Meva and St Issey. The first record is of a hamlet of this name in 1313, but there were local settlements in the Bronze Age. Two Bronze Age Burial Urns were discovered at nearby Portmellon.
From the top of Polkirt Hill there is a great view over the higgledy streets, the harbour and the yachting pool. Further out can be seen the golden sands of Polstreath Beach and the scenic coastal path over Chapel Point to Gorran Haven.
The Beautiful Minack Theatre is an open-air theatre, constructed above a gully with a rocky granite outcrop jutting into the sea. The theatre is at Porthcurno, 4 miles from Land's End in Cornwall, England

A Short visit to Rame Head Cornwall
The Beautiful Cornish coastline we visited on a windy day in early August 2017. It was too windy on the coast to fly my quadcopter on the headland but as we moved a little further inland we found it more sheltered in the village of Rame and took to the sky at a low level to get some shots of the cool village church.
St.Michael's chapel (Rame Head) - Cornwall.
(12) Rame - (Cornish - Pendenhar = End/Head of the high fort. East & West Gear - (Cornish - An ger/Gear = Hill fort/Earthwork. St.Michael's chapel sits on top of the ancient promontory of Rame head.Either side of the headland is East & West Gear.Once an Iron age castle with archaeological remains of roundhouses and other ancient structures. This area,as suggested, has had thousands of years of occupation. The medieval chapel dedicated to St.Michael the archangel was possibly a religious site long before it was recorded in 1397 and granted a licence for mass in 1425.This video was taken on a misty overcast evening and doesn't really do this stunning headland justice, nor does my cheapy camera! On a very clear day you can see the Lizard point a good few miles to the west quite easily.
