Hiking RAMSEY CASCADES (Great Smoky Mountains)
I hiked with some new friends on the Ramsey Cascades trail in Greenbrier in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This is a fairly tough 8 mile (out and back) hike to the tallest waterfall in the Smoky Mountains and is also one of the sections of the park with old growth forest that wasn't stripped by lumber companies. We also had the falls to ourselves this trip which is not a common occurrence.

Midlife Hiking Club decided to get a hike in at The Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Could be the last time we see snow for a bit and Ramsey Cascades Trail never lets us down when it comes to good physical hiking and beautiful views!
The National Park does not allow dogs, so Liberty stayed at home with the cats on this adventure! As always you can find a detailed reviews, maps, and gps tracks of this trail and many other southeast trails by visiting our website at
Ramsey Cascades Trail gains around 2200 feet in a 4-5 mile trek. The terrain is extremely rugged over the last 1/3 of a mile. Most Smoky's hikers consider this trail to be strenuous and challenging. You can rest assured you will get your cardio in for the day!
The trail is also known for having the three of the largest trees in the National Park and they are truly spectacular. A Red Maple @ 141', White Oak @ 123', and a Black Cherry @ 146'. There is a huge variety of giant trees on this trail and you should expect to see Tulip, Silverbells, Eastern Hemlocks, Basswoods, and Yellow Birches
A more notable feature of the trail is Ramsey Cascades the tallest waterfall in the National Park. It's nearly 100 feet tall and cascades over several rock tiers into the creek below. The area is extremely dangerous and the park warns visitors of prior deaths at the waterfall to drive that point home. Please use caution and PLEASE watch your children!

Hike with me to Ramsey Cascades, Smoky Mountains, Tennessee
Come along on an 8 mile roundtrip hike to Ramsey Cascades near Gatlinburg, Tennessee. As you can tell from previous videos I love the Smoky Mountains. Take hwy 321 from Gatlinburg toward Greenbrier and turn right at the Greenbrier exit toward the Ramsey Cascades trailhead. It is a curvy, unpaved road. There is a picnic area. That might be a good place to stop for some rest after the hike. Start having fun and enjoy this beautiful part of the country.

It was a strenuous hike there and back; 8 miles total... but it was worth the view.

Ramsey Cascades Upper Waterfalls
Hike to the Waterfalls above Ramsey Cascades. The first set of falls(Middle) is about a quarter of a mile past Ramsey, the next(Upper) is about a half mile. There is NO trail past Ramsey Cascade. I had to climb up and around Ramsey and then traverse the stream for another half mile plus. It is VERY treacherous and I went swimming a few times, unintentionally, as I climbed moss and ice covered river boulders. It took me about and hour to hour and a half to get to the upper falls past Rasmey. The Upper falls are actually bigger then Ramsey Cascades!

Ramsey Cascades
Ramsey Cascades is the tallest waterfall in the Great Smoky Mountains, falling 100 feet before tumbling down through the Greenbrier section of the park. The 4 mile hike climbs steadily after the first 1.5 miles along an old road, and is considered strenuous. After recent heavy rains, tons of water pushed over the falls today.
A Rainy Hike to Laurel Falls - Smoky Mountains National Park Tennessee
One of the shorter, easier hiking trails in the Smokies and close to all the touristy fun in Gatlinburg, pick a weekday to go if a quieter hike is what you prefer. It can get pretty crowded. No bears, birds or other critters spotted, but plenty of wildflowers in warm mid-May.
